    I saw a 2021 CRF450RL with 614 miles on it in September of 2021 for a killer price, so I just had to buy it. I have been following the CRF450L/RL since it hit the sales floors, so I was prepared for the dreaded snatchy throttle response and flameouts/lean stalling. I turned the idle speed up slightly and actually thought it was not bad and at first believed I'd simply ride it with the stock ECU forever. But hearing and reading sooooo much about the awesomeness of the Vortex ECU and an aftermarket exhaust system made me decide to order one just to see if it was deserving of all the high praise. Turns out it was a good move to do so because it made the throttle response completely normal, and the stalling/flameouts vanished. On top if the Vortex ECU, I installed an FMF Megabomb head pipe and Q4 muffler for a great sound that's not too loud, less weight, better looks, and also the advantage of no more baking heat radiating off the stock cat muffler. In this case, curiosity killed the cat while making it all better. :D It's funny because although I've made a couple mods to the clutch to make it slightly heavier to pull (replaced 3 of the stock clutch springs with stiffer CRF450R springs) and grabbier over a shorter lever pull (removed the clutch judder spring and spring seat), I think the clutch pull is one of the smoothest and easiest I've had on one of my motorcycles. I mention this because I often hear reviews with riders saying they think the clutch pull is too hard. I also installed suspension springs suited for my weight, got rid of the air injection plumbing and evap canister, removed the plastic crankcase covers, installed a one-tooth-larger rear sprocket, got a DID 520 ERVT chain with a rivet-style master link, removed the stock mirrors and installed one folding mirror, and mounded real knobby tired and balanced the wheels. I really like the CRF450RL and I think of it as a desert sled because like the 2009 CRF450X I used to ride, it loves to go real fast over rough ground with its tremendous stability and quality, firm suspension.

    You mean you didn't immediately notice the lack of fuel cut when closing and opening the throttle? 🤔 Getting rid of that was the No. 1 thing I was expecting to experience when I decided to buy a Vortex ECU for mine after riding it stock for a while.🙂 Another nice thing is elimination of the lean stalling and flameouts just when you don't want them. 😡

    I got my 300 Rally less than a month ago and absolutely love it to bits already. I've been riding about 40 years and have had a lot of different bikes over the decades. As I've gotten older I've realised that speeding to get somewhere is having to miss all the stuff along the way. The 300 will allow me to tootle around whilst looking over hedges and ditches and its light weight means that narrow lanes with grass in the middle don't scare me any more. I can't wait for next year when i get to go to the Outer Hebridies and some of the other Inner Isles. If only Honda had grown a pair and made a 450 version.

    Just found your channel, got really lucky myself and bought a 23 a few months ago. 600 ish miles ( changed oil to synthetic at 490) and absolutely love the bike. Suspension is indeed a joke, I’m 6’1 and 210 butt naked. General cruise it’s not an issue, but hit an overpass at 55 and you realize this sh$& ain’t right! Old school xr guy, still own a couple and Honda all the way, but I’m definitely going to spend the coin on suspension. Really think this bike is something anyone can afford, and with a little bit more investment it really is something special. Ride within your means and your talent and you’ll often find less is more!

Merci encore.

An other than little lack of power the XR150L $5300 plated out the door is the value bike of the year . + bikes are . 2010 GL1800 . 2001 GL1800 , 2022 NAVI 2023 XR150L.

    I just sold my 450L too. I'm replacing it with a Kove 450 Rally, which should arrive next week. I chose it over the 300L Rally because of the extra HPs and the larger gas tanks (8 gallons). It should be the perfect BDR bike with good suspension. The downsides - will it have Honda reliability and can I get parts for it going forward?

  • @chantdeguerre
    @chantdeguerre11 ай бұрын

    The Koves are really interesting! In Canada the only dealer is in Alberta which is very, very far from me (and registering vehicles from out of province is a big PITA) so I didn't really consider it. But I'm watching that bike closely because in a few years, you never know!

  • @zeezeerhydon7083
    @zeezeerhydon708311 ай бұрын

    I was just thinking about doing the same thing. I have a 2021 crf450rl and I've owned it for about a year and the honeymoon has definitely settled. A local dealer has a crf300 and 300 rally. I was thinking about getting a rally but I already have a africa twin.

  • @chantdeguerre
    @chantdeguerre11 ай бұрын

    Hmm tough one. If you're already using the Africa Twin for longer travel you'd have to kinda consider what kind of rides you'd wanna do on a rally. If you were using that 450 for more technical / enduro stuff, I dunno if the rally would be a great replacement considering the super soft suspension and all that breakable plastic.

  • @zeezeerhydon7083
    @zeezeerhydon708311 ай бұрын

    @@chantdeguerre Thank you for the advice. I think what I dislike about the 450 is that it's a high performance dirt bike and I've never been into racing enduro or mx. the power comes in handy on the road but everything else kinda sucks in terms of comfort and usability. maybe I should just keep it and run it but it's definitely not on my favorite motorcycle list anymore.

    Looks like a great trip, and nice video footage. Since you stayed in hotels/motels may I ask if you had any security issues with your bike? Did you have locks and a cover, or bring it inside? I'm looking forward to doing a similar type of trip on the West Coast. Thanks!

  • @chantdeguerre
    @chantdeguerre11 ай бұрын

    No, I didn't do anything special for security. I use the Mosko Moto soft luggage system and I took the waterproof bags (which go into the carriers) inside with me at night which is where my stuff was. I left my 2 gas bottles and the luggage holders on the bikes overnight, didn't have any issues. Most of the BDR route is pretty out of the way from population centers so it didn't really feel like I was taking a risk.

    I cannot help but think that the initial stress of hacking off the stock plate bracket, directionals and brake light on a brand new bike followed by destroying a license plate as a direct consequence and then whatever issues arise next due to hacking-up the electrical harness or because a driver behind you cannot tell what the hell those little bunched-up lights are even supposed to mean- Is worth even considering that “Mod” anymore. She’s looking and sounding great in the mean-time tho. Also FMF has a nice little heat shield for megabomb- Look around for it if you have not yet. Cool vid.

    Looks like the 12oclock labs kit. Doesn't require any hacking at all of parts or the electric connectors. It also comes with hardware so not sure why he didn't include everything. Nothing is destroyed and you can just pop back ugly stock tail and blinkers if you want.

    Night and day from the pig lol. Been 4 years with the CRF and I switched from the drz, the drz was my first bike. When I got on this CRF I was immediately blown away by the weight, not so much by the power cause I had things done to the pig... But the nimbleness of the CRF (and the 6th gear mod) had me. Oh let's not forget the EFI 😂

    The 450L/RL is the best dual sport for open, western USA. The KLX300 is the best for wooded and urban USA. Iv had both in both terrain. The 450 had the power for sand, desert, hill climbs. The KLX has the smoothest throttle mapping Iv ever felt on an efi bike thats soooo much nicer for tight trails. If u are complaining about either of these bikes, you are not riding them where and what they are intended for.

    This is why I'm going to sell my Tuareg. Just not confident with it off-road by myself. Great bike but I'm using it solely on the road. I came to it from a WR250R and initially loved the road manners, tubeless tires, cruise-control and the wind protection, but found myself missing the freedom of having a light bike that I could drop on a hill and not need others to help me pick it up. The downside of the WR250R was the knitting of trails together using the highways (BDR rides). With gear strapped on, it struggled to keep up with traffic going uphill into the wind. Just bought a 450L and now enjoying the light bike that has the power to ride the highways. Don't enjoy road touring (road traffic scares me as I get older).
