The Sports Card Professor
The Sports Card Professor
I will be exploring the endless world of Sports Cards, looking at each set to help collectors better understand the various cards, inserts, and parallels that we are collecting. If you ask me, I am a sports card master and expert (and if you ask my parents, I have just been wasting my time), but I am still finding exciting new tidbits of information about cards as I continue along. On this channel I will be sharing my ever-growing knowledge with you. So, welcome, and enjoy the show.

This may be a stupid question, but if the cards aren't all the same size, if a card is off because it's not centered, what's stopping you from shaving one side to make it centered 🤔
That certainly is a good question. None of the cards are oversized so they would have to be trimmed down to an undersized dimension to match the already smaller cards. I guess that's a question to have with St. Peter at the foot of the Pearly Gates since that's who you would ultimately be answering to. Oh, and the grading companies might have a say on that as well.
1989-90 Hoops or Fleer?
Score sold this as "premium" over their base Score card set??? Honestly, I think Score was better than their Pinnacle brand. But glad to see someone likes them, if we all liked everything the same, we wouldn't like anything.
Score sure did do a great job with their 1992 baseball design.
those score cards are the most 90s design ever. I love it
Thanks for the review Darren. I didn’t remember the design of this set & I prefer the American version
I like the US player cards and the Canadian subset cards.
Another great one ☝️ 🎉
I got the complete set this week and sorted it. I noticed that #1-110 contains by far the most number of HOFers, over half of the HOF I sorted out were from the purple. Also in the complete set, although not sorted by number, they do have a distinct pattern with the last numbers, if you see a 3, then the next card is going to end in 7, a 2 and the next card will end with 8..... They also wrote the best biographies of the players on the back with a easy to read font. Getting 3 or 4 of the same card from a box would be well within the realms of probabilities while the odds of not getting a card are about 1 in 3.
The packs have the same numeric structure. I knew that there was a pattern to the order, as you saw in the complete set, but it wasn't until after this video that I started looking for it. Upper Deck, Pro Set, and Score all have their own patterns.
Another great one 🎉
It is a really nice set
Here we go!
Trim your nails 😂😂
I have 2 electric court golds Chris Webber base rc and Dennis Rodman. Personally I like the look of the cards
I have 54 of the gold cards, and ironically I found that the one I pulled in the video...well, I already had it. The gold versions do look cool, that sparkle works so well with the basketball cards.
@@sportscardprofessor I Agree with the Gold look and it pops sparkle, also the set being all black are worth more in high grades being tough grades especially the golds
I was lucky enough to pull the Behind the Glass trade card back in 1993. Still have the set. The crazy thing about the USA trade cards is they are not really valuable. I bought a Scottie Pippen one off of ebay for 2 bucks. You would think they would be more valuable considering how hard they were to get? Behind the Glass trade card had better odds which I think was 1:360. I think the other regional boxes had the Die Cut All Stars which are highly sought after.
Yeah, I was hoping for one of the All Star cards. I wish that all trade cards were better valued, everyone just throws them away.
@@sportscardprofessor I have seen some expired trade cards that were PSA 9s on ebay but typically people don't want them. Plus the prices are kind of outrageous in those cases.
The Pacific prisms design is still ripped off by many to this day
Before I even watch the video. Thanks for reviewing this. Top 10 set of all time for me from any sport. More from nostalgia bias. Hobby packs had one of the best inserts of the 90's, the die-cut All Stars. It sucks retail didn't have it.
I was really excited when I found that I'd get a chance to do this.
Another great one 1️⃣ 🎉
I thought that was a pretty set. Enjoyed opening those.
I probably just got to them too late to have an early opinion of them. by the time I saw them I was well used to the 1994 design and so I've always contrasted the two.
Me too. Great set!
I always liked the fact that their cards had rounded corners.
Yeah, they are such a unique part of the collecting world.
I usually generally agree with most your rankings, but I really think 1994 Leaf Limited was one of the better designs if not my favorite design of ‘94
I do love it as an insert, so I get why you like it.
Me2 I love buying those in PSA 10
The rookie reprint autos are some of my all-time favorites
Man, don't they just look amazing?
Another zinger!!!
Solid breakdown
Another great one
I need to note that I do know the reason for the 70 Wins text which is that 70 was the magic record number, but they didn't clearly specify it which is what I was referring to.
Lol only if these were ranked compared to rookie cards of today
Well Stadium Club sure would be a breath of fresh air today.
You know what's driving a market for this Junk wax? The Junk Slab era!!! Everyone wants a PSA 10 Rookie Card and getting a 10 is harder than you think
It's still based upon gambling. I created this video nearly 4 years ago and a lot changed in just the nest month after it went up, but most of the principles still hold even though the examples look different now. There are a lot of 10s not yet graded, so those slab rarity metrics are far more fluid than people realize.
Jamie Watson... Man that's a name i haven't heard on forever. I thought he was going to be great... 🤷. Skybox really did well with their rookies.
Brace yourself, you may have to wait quite a bit longer before hearing the name again.
@@sportscardprofessor I bet 😂🤣
Loved this video. Thank you!
1948 Topps Magic had football the cards size was about a thumbnail
I don't really consider those as cards, but the Topps Felt certainly do...but them that's for the Early Topps video.
Loving these 90's boxes. Any recommendations where to still buy them?
I'm just checking around on Ebay. I wish I new a great place to look.
That looks like a fun rip! Did you ever find out for sure if that Davis insert is the one you or was? Pretty interesting how the design is separated into positions like that. Great review, thanks!
Yeah, it is a surprisingly rare card in the set. The thing that really threw me off is that I already had a copy of it so I was surprised to see that I now had two copies of a super-rare card.
@@sportscardprofessor that's awesome! Great duplicate add to your collection! With it being a rare card, that's funny you got it a second time.
Dude, I like watching your videos, but those fingernails are creeping me out!!
What most valuable cards that come from this box set
Well this series 1 box has Montana, Barry Sanders, john Elway, Dan Marino, and the Junior Seau rookie.
@sportscardprofessor I got and unopened box of 36 packs today, now thinking not worth opening packs..paid 30 for box
@@FootballGuy_7 Yeah, that's a bit high, but the cards do look amazing. I really wish that more collectors took the time to appreciate how great some of these cards look. Naturally the difference is that these are my era of players so I can appreciate them as well, but the cards are gorgeous.
@sportscardprofessor thanks for advice
Hi Just watched this video, it's been 9 no. So you might have completed your sets by now. But if you haven't you could send me a list of cards you need. 92 was the year I started collecting and I have a lot of these. They are and have been in binder ever since. Anyways I probably have the ones you need. Let me know
Thanks for the offer, but yes I have completed the set.
The Emmitt checklist without the bar is a promo version. There is a regular bar version and the gold parallel. I own all three. Unfortunately KZread won’t let me add a picture to this comment.
I need to find out more about that checklist, I had purchased the set complete so I just assumed that the card I've got was out of packs. I did forget to mention that the What If cards also come as promos.
@@sportscardprofessor I’ll be happy to send you a picture of all three if you want.
@@jaredjoy896 No need, I did see the two versions on Ebay. As for the gold version I did say in the video that all cards in the set have the gold parallel, and I already have the Marino parallel in hand.
Those '96 inserts are pretty great.
Keep rocking it 🎉
I'm holding in there.
I had a stack of Red Zone cards as a kid when they came out. I still have them too, but I never actually played the game. 😂 A few years ago I hand collated the complete 1996 set and put them in a binder.
I have to admit that I enjoyed playing the game. I don't have the time to do it much, but that video was a cool opportunity.
All these years and I never realized the corners on the Score RCs were the same image like that. Pretty cool! And yes, had it been connecting to the cards on front and behind, that would've been genius. Missed opportunity.
I love the 1992-93 Skybox School Ties cards, the tying together of all the cards looks amazing.
Useless.... you might think but what if an entire gum ,wax stain set becomes super valued. I just think it's funny since everyone wants to sell cards since covid for a profit. For myself, I just collect
I still have the cards pulled aside because I do love the idea. it certainly would be a unique set.
Well done
We’re a few years into the channel and it has been an insightful and entertaining ride! However, one can’t help but wonder when we will get our first Collector’s Edge video? ;)
Gee, what would ever give you the idea that I might do a video on Edge? I'm still trying to figure this company out, it is just such an amazing mess that I feel there's still a lot that I haven't stumbled upon. In my collection I put a ton of work into collecting all things '95 Excalibur and what a rabbit hole that single set proved to be.
Another spot on list. Upper Deck was just GOAT during mid 90's. But maybe it's just me but I enjoy looking at and analyzing bad design over good design. There is this unique intrigue about hillariously atrocious designs.
Perhaps I should do a Future Stars card design video. That should by right up your alley...or gutter.
Did you mention the Bobby Orr autograph inserts?
Wow, it turns out that I did miss that. Thanks for catching it.
@@sportscardprofessor Oh okay. I thought maybe I missed it. lol
Let me buy the extra Jeter!!!
Awesome
