I like your analysis of the sample at 7 and a half minutes in. Here's the flawed argument again, just applied to a setting that we're all more familiar with. The vast majority of car trips do not result in airbag deployment; therefore, cars don't need airbags. That makes it pretty evident immediately that EA's original analysis is incomplete (at best).

The way how I see it, the main issue with the Shuttle is its size. It was too big. Had it been smaller and only used to transport crew, it would've been fantastic. Launch payload ahead of the Shuttle launch date on its own rocket. Then you launch the astronauts on the smaller Shuttle to build the Space Station in space. Bring the astronauts home and job done. The Shuttle wouldn't carry any large cargo. Just necessities like food, water, and amenities for humans. I heard that was the original plan for the Shuttle by NASA but too many people put their hands in the pot and eventually the Shuttle got too big. A shame really

First things first: Really a great video, that really made a good slice over the Shuttle history and why it looked like that in the end. I agree, the Shuttle wasn't all good, I would have prefered to treat it as a flight prototype. Build two, fly them, gather experience, learn the quirks and things we didn't know before. And then build a better version. Maybe cheaper, maybe not, but at least better. And then go on to look if its really ready for treating it like a production ready vehicle to create a fleet of spacecraft which. The first try to build a manned, winged, reuseable spacecraft with its own spacecraft wharf inside mislabeled as payload bay obviously should have the pressure to be that. PS: What I didn't know until recently, the Shuttle actually had 6 AP-101B/S on board. There was an in flight spare on-board somewhere within the middeck in case a GPC failed. And considering the weight of these things, NASA must really put priority on making sure that the DPS works. In one mission, it was actually used to replace a broken GPC in orbit.

Idk how small sounding rocket experience can be compared to launching a massive spaceplane But i must say, its fascinating and terrifiying how your mentality changes once you pronounce something "working" Suddenly you assume something wont break even if there are slight hints something is off, or there are still issues being worked on. Thats how we blew up the motor on one of the final tests, tbf partly due to design flaw, but mainly because of our decisions

Could a heat pump be efficient at both cooling the nitrogen and heat the lythium at once? I suppose theres no such sources of onboard electric power on these vessels

Knowing nothing about rockets i thought "if what you need is gas expansion would the intense temperature od a reactor be efficient enough to make a rocket?" While watching this and i looked it up and its a real concept and apparently some efficient, i wonder why its not used 🤓☝️(catastrophic failure leading to fallout lol)

Coming from an audio guys perspective, I would guess beryllium was used for its unique combination of high stiffness and low mass, plus the fact that it’s really good at damping high frequency and thus would make the system less susceptible to feedback from vibration. Beryllium is used exactly for these reasons in über high end tweeter cones

Can you provide more detail on your claim the shuttle was the first aircraft to fly with Fly-by-wire? The F-16 first flight was 1974, while Enterprise first flew in 1977. So at face value shuttle wasn’t first, but I’m sure you knew this and am interested in the nitty gritty details about the FBW development process that makes you say shuttle was first.

It wasn’t the first. It was the first OPERATIONAL aircraft with DIGITAL fly by wire. The original f-16 system was analog, but upgraded to fully digital sometime in the 1980s. If you’re interested, I made an entire video about it a few months ago - it’s on my channel.
