Enjoyed your video. 😊 I wanted to mention another theme I see running throughout the album, but most pointedly in How Did It End? After listening to the album several times, I think I heard another theme/message in the album…. Taylor writes very personal, often autobiographical songs and she knows that. She knows people will analyze and discuss them, and as an artist she would want people to do that. I think the part of what she would like to happen is the reining in of the obsessive dissection of her songs for the details of EXACTLY who, when and where. (And Taylor seems fully aware she contributed to this dynamic.) I think it’s completely possible to listen to the stories she’s telling, relate to them, know that there’s a good chance they come from her life, analyze the music, the lyrics, references to other songs, etc. while not trying to figure out exactly who she’s talking about. We really don’t need to know that to enjoy and relate to her work. For example, if one song seems to reference an earlier song, we can know/say that the two songs seem to be about the same person. What we don’t need to do is try to figure out exactly who that person is. I also thought, Taylor might have been sending a message in the title track when she specifically used the names “Jack” and “Lucy”. That was very unusual for her to list actual names. As we know, Taylor is a VERY intentional writer. My take on why she did that is to say that she’ll tell us everything she wants us to know within the song. If she wants us to know, specifically, who she’s talking about, she’ll tell us. Now that I think about it, she also did the capitalization of KIM in Thank You Aimee. So there’s another one where she’s saying, yeah, this is who the song is about (at least in part). I also think that Taylor’s work has evolved beyond a one-to-one relationship between one person/event to one song. While she still seems to be writing some of them like that, in others she’s gotten a bit more abstract. She’s mixing fact with fiction (started in folklore but continues in this album- probably most notably in Fortnight). She also seems to be doing more composite sketches where several people/events are blended into one song. Just my thoughts.
