  Effective 11/2022, the title of this video should be updated to "Tesla/NACS to J-1772". Note that J-1772 is the top circular part of the (North American) CCS-1 combo charging jack. A J-1772 charging jack is found on all North American EVs manufactured since 2012 except for Tesla BEVs (which have a Tesla/NACS charging port and come with a standard J-1772-to-Tesla adapter for Level 1/2 ac charging).

  1. These "TeslaTap" Level 1/2 ac charging adapters (Tesla/NACS-to-J1772) come in different power/amperage ratings, some newer EVs are capable of higher-power ac charging that can potentially overheat/melt these adapters, so do your research. In general, you get what you pay for. Adapters that are rated for higher power/current levels are generally safer and more expensive. New, compact adapters are available from industry leader TeslaTap that are rated for up to 20kW/80A@250Vac continuous load. 2. These Level 1/2 ac adapters do not connect to the two bottom (North American) CCS-1 combo dc pins, so they cannot be used for fast dc charging at public Tesla Supercharger stations (it is literally impossible). You CAN mechanically connect a Tesla/NACS charging plug to the round J-1772 jack (the top part of the CCS-1 combo jack), but the signaling (digital "handshake" negotiation) required to initiate dc charging will always fail, preventing any (unsafe) attempt at a dc charging connection. (8/2023) New Tesla/NACS-to-CCS-1 adapters will soon become available for (public) dc charging. It's likely that these new adapters will not work for Level 1/2 ac charging, so a "TeslaTap" adapter will likely still be required for Level 1/2 home/destination ac charging a CCS-1 equipped EV using a Tesla/NACS EVSE such as a Tesla Wall Connector or Tesla Mobile Connector. Now that Tesla/NACS is being widely adopted for EV charging across North America, there will soon be approved Tesla/NACS-to-CCS-1 adapters available (reportedly in early 2024, from Tesla and other NACS-supporting automakers). Meanwhile, a few (~12) US Tesla Superchargers have been retrofitted with built-in "MagicDock" adapters for charging non-Tesla EVs equipped with CCS-1 charging ports as part of a test program. A valid billing account at Tesla.com (for Plug-and-Charge) and the Tesla app (iOS/Android) are both required in order to charge a non-Tesla EV at a "MagicDock" equipped Tesla Supercharger station. Stay tuned as NACS evolves.
