Ooh, I love these. That shadowbox is so much fun. And not just for stirring up suspense, although of course that's it's best use --- NPCs can hear the music too, and after you teach the players that, there's even more fun opportunities to be had. - They're walking through a haunted tomb, the music box is playing the entire time in the background but they know why and forget about it. Then they meet someone, who seems helpful, and is genuinely helpful, and I'd recommend that they don't hold any ill intentions toward the players. But they don't comment on the music box, because they can't hear it. I just want to see if the player's notice. Or even better, they trust this character and meet them again later on, and are shocked when the music plays. - The players walk into a town that had a sinister mystery going on, and inadvertently and immediately blow it wide open. Treat it like a one-shot adventure, and drop them right into the deep end. Pick your favorite undead, your favorite investigator/inquisitor, add in a mountain of drama in the town, and really ham it up. Just a quick introduction of "wait, what's going on?" followed by non-stop chaotic action. The hag ring...I'd make one change. When you take the ring off, your eye doesn't magically pop back into place. It simply turns back from a marble into a fleshy eye. If you've put the eye back into place before hand, it's totally fine. But if you haven't...the magic's over. You feel, and bleed, like your eye was just ripped out of its socket, _because it was_. Better put the ring back on quick. This also makes it much easier to lose the eye...there's no mechanical penalty for that, other than the ring isn't useful for you anymore. And it's not so bad. And unless they drop the marble eye into an infinite void, it's always possible to get it back. And in the meantime, they can always just give the ring to another player -- -oh wait. That would mean taking three points of damage and bleeding from your open eye socket, and until you get it safely back your misplaced eye is much more vulnerable. Diva's belt, and dwarven noble lady tiara, 10/10, no notes. Mug of drinking is fun. Wonder where they find it...oh! I've got it. It doesn't just orient its handle towards the nearest tavern; if it falls over it can also start rolling across the ground trying to get there! The party finds it gently bumping into a wall (or rock, or door), trying and failing to path its way in a straight line towards the nearest tavern. You could even take that a step farther. It's not just enchanted. It's sentient. It has a personality, and an intelligence score of 2. It WANTS to be filled with ale. It will feebly and petulantly protest if filled with water or anything else. If you're taking too long to go to the tavern, it'll try to fall out of your pack when you open it and head there itself. If you let it roll freely on your way back to town, it'll roll faster, faster, joyously leaping and bouncing down the final stretch like a dog running to meet its owner. It all depends if your characters need another weird pet, or an unusual magic compas. Sebastian, the milk toast horse butler. I'm going to make a few changes, and for a good reason. For flavor reasons (and probably influenced by shikanoko) he's a deer, not a horse. I'm picturing a character like Bambi's father. And mechanically, Sebastian only has 3/5 senses. He can't see or smell. He can only talk and hear while someone is holding him, though he always has a sense of touch. This limits what he can do -- he's not a second Hag's Ring. Sebastian gets lonely when stowed away, but he's too pure to be upset about it. He won't even bring it up. He won't even ask them to hold him, even though those are the best moments of his life. @@OwlbearRogue we only play every other week. So they are slow going it's kind of funny sometimes it is just a couple rooms in the dungeon. I did alter the green dragon Venomfang as a big bad for their level 5 to 6 progression. Made her kind of a shopkeep sending them after the druid. We're going to finish that up on the 25th. Two of the longterm groups are doing Wild Beyond the Witchlight and the other two are playing in a homebrew world of mine where they can at one point wander into the feywild for a little bit. The one-shots are anything and everything. All but one of my games take place in the material plane 😄

I know you said no mindflayers, but on a related note, I was always amazed at how frogs could exist in dry creek mud for such a long time through estivation, and then survive/activate when it finally rains. I could see a trapped mindflayer existing that way, waiting for the proper conditions.

Maybe it could become a survive the fight rather than win the fight with the big bad. The monster only sticks around long enough to infect some/all of the potential victims, and then it vanishes. The remaining characters, both player and non-player, have to decide how to flee, heal themselves, and contain the infections, possibly having to kill each other to keep things from spreading through those infected. The big bad is either strategically poised to leave, or is simply too difficult to defeat, and the players are left scrambling to do damage control.

This isn't a Kraken Week video. According to the pitch, content creators would be posting "videos with an ocean or underwater theme." This has neither. You could have fixed this easily by simply including a lake or reservoir and placing a plot point at the bottem. I'd also hesitate to call this a one-shot, its more of a writing prompt as it has nearly no content. This could be fixed by actually writing an adventure. Three PoIs isn't too much to write. Just make a small town, homestead, and some body of water deep enough for submersion (it is Kraken week after all) and flesh out each one enough for maybe 30 minutes of play time. If you're never written one-shot campaigns I'm sure there are a few free Adventurers League campaigns out there to look at, try to format yours similarly.

Thank you for the engagement! My style of sharing information with other DM's is going to be most enjoyable for a certain kind of person who seldom uses written material in its entirety. They're experienced DM's who are looking for a few ideas to tickle their brain. They do fairly minimal prep for games. They're comfortable with improv. They sneeze out NPCs in their sleep, collect them all in the morning, and eat them for breakfast. Some people aren't like that. They prefer highly structured, written adventures they can just sit down and run. Neither style is right or wrong; people's brains just work differently. You're not going to get that style from me very often. But, as you pointed out, there are many Adventure League games you can go enjoy if you prefer that style! You're also right that this is a flexible story that you can easily put in a lake if you want an adventure that adheres more literally/traditionally to the prompt.

😂 It's spelled Oblex and every instance I could find of someone saying it they pronounced it Oblex. BUT I agree with you that Ooblex would make more sense and sound oozy. I wanted it to be Ooblex.

@@OwlbearRogue we only play every other week. So they are slow going it's kind of funny sometimes it is just a couple rooms in the dungeon. I did alter the green dragon Venomfang as a big bad for their level 5 to 6 progression. Made her kind of a shopkeep sending them after the druid. We're going to finish that up on the 25th. @arcaniswithertree4284 I'm currently running for 4 different regular groups and then I have a pool or people who play one-shots with me. Two of the longterm groups are doing Wild Beyond the Witchlight and the other two are playing in a homebrew world of mine where they can at one point wander into the feywild for a little bit. The one-shots are anything and everything. All but one of my games take place in the material plane 😄
I know you said no mindflayers, but on a related note, I was always amazed at how frogs could exist in dry creek mud for such a long time through estivation, and then survive/activate when it finally rains. I could see a trapped mindflayer existing that way, waiting for the proper conditions.

I love the creativity on display here. I’m not a 5e DM anymore, but I am wired like you as a GM, and I appreciate the genre-bending, system agnostic approach to this and the Western adventure in your previous video. The magic fireworks ideas and the bully timer are really fun ideas! I’m so glad Kraken Week brought you an audience.

Maybe it could become a survive the fight rather than win the fight with the big bad. The monster only sticks around long enough to infect some/all of the potential victims, and then it vanishes. The remaining characters, both player and non-player, have to decide how to flee, heal themselves, and contain the infections, possibly having to kill each other to keep things from spreading through those infected. The big bad is either strategically poised to leave, or is simply too difficult to defeat, and the players are left scrambling to do damage control.
@nicolascuccimarri8981 I love this take! Definitely solves some of the challenges of a water monster in a not so water world. This is exactly how I hope people use the ideas I throw out!

This isn't a Kraken Week video. According to the pitch, content creators would be posting "videos with an ocean or underwater theme." This has neither. You could have fixed this easily by simply including a lake or reservoir and placing a plot point at the bottem. I'd also hesitate to call this a one-shot, its more of a writing prompt as it has nearly no content. This could be fixed by actually writing an adventure. Three PoIs isn't too much to write. Just make a small town, homestead, and some body of water deep enough for submersion (it is Kraken week after all) and flesh out each one enough for maybe 30 minutes of play time. If you're never written one-shot campaigns I'm sure there are a few free Adventurers League campaigns out there to look at, try to format yours similarly.
Thank you for the engagement! My style of sharing information with other DM's is going to be most enjoyable for a certain kind of person who seldom uses written material in its entirety. They're experienced DM's who are looking for a few ideas to tickle their brain. They do fairly minimal prep for games. They're comfortable with improv. They sneeze out NPCs in their sleep, collect them all in the morning, and eat them for breakfast. Some people aren't like that. They prefer highly structured, written adventures they can just sit down and run. Neither style is right or wrong; people's brains just work differently. You're not going to get that style from me very often. But, as you pointed out, there are many Adventure League games you can go enjoy if you prefer that style! You're also right that this is a flexible story that you can easily put in a lake if you want an adventure that adheres more literally/traditionally to the prompt.

Why do you mispronounce ooblex, but pronounce ooze correctly?
😂 It's spelled Oblex and every instance I could find of someone saying it they pronounced it Oblex. BUT I agree with you that Ooblex would make more sense and sound oozy. I wanted it to be Ooblex.
Apparently the Oblex were designed by a kid via the Make A Wish Foundation. So remember, that O pronunciation was part of the wish of a dying child. Don’t oo it.
