Give it a wipe down and new strings. Would cost 10 bucks and you’d think differently
It's so true, it's always best to blame the strings
Elixirs, in 80/20, 10-47, primetone 0.73 pick 😂😂. I love my guitar that bright, D'addario I love but i find a bit too loud imohop.
Can you compare primetone vs tortex jazz iii's? I heard somewhere that those tortex' were pretty bright
For me, prime tone as light as can be, 10 (even 9) gauge acoustic strings, I love my acoustic really bright and zingy. Most ppl want opposite I feel
I think you're right most people want to round out the tone with the pick on an acoustic, which is the case for me unless I'm playing on dull strings, in which case I'll brighten it up with a brighter pick... I just sat down with my pick collection trying to find out what would be the zingiest flappiest bright pick, and the prime tones are going to be hard to beat. I think you should try tortex Sharp. Their normal tortex pics but they are pointy, which will make them brighter. It also makes him a little long so you would get more of that Flappy smacky sound. Probably yellows or greens, but you should try them all if you can.
Tortex Jazz 3 is bright only if you go thick, 1.5 mm or more. Even 1.14 mm sound of significantly darker. The reason is because they don't put much of a bevel on them, and bevel darken tone. Set a 1.5 is so thick that the edges are almost square, which brightens it up when combined with the stiffness of being thick. When there's a bevel (i.e. roundness of the edge), it gets darker as you get thicker. ... I just sat down with a bunch of jazz 3 picks and some others, and the 1.5 mm tortex was even brighter than the ultex Jazz 3, which surprised me. But a regular black stiffo Jazz 3 will be pretty bright. One of my everyday pics is a black stiffo Jazz two (not as pointy).
It sounds great to me. What kind of guitar do you have at home? If you don't like the guitar, as is, perhaps a new set of strings is in order.
I also thought it sounded great hearing it again on the video. I've had that experience sometimes with martin's, they sound best from where the listener would be standing, not necessarily from where the player is.
Here's some examples of what I have at home: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3h4u7ewpZfTl7A.htmlsi=ypHH9ir7Srvzzcq3 ... kzread.info/dash/bejne/gaCettWfaNu-ZMo.htmlsi=_or_wDkpi1-RwwIL ... kzread.info/dash/bejne/fqOjqsSdhczKddY.htmlsi=m3rl85XWjKERWImj
I prefer the stringjoy
your comming out as mahagony guy ;-)
lol can't deny it anymore
I bought one for $350 and it sounds amazing and it’s a great campfire guitar
Awesome!
Mariah? No, that’s just wrong 😂

I save my combined sounds and factory pre sets to NAM profiler software or pedal for live gigs ..
Eh. I keep one in my daughter’s play room. I keep my P.A. Martin in my music room.
Guitar center must change the way they do things keep up with the times or they'll go the way of Mars music and Sam Ash
I love the Baggs Anthem. I just wanted to know if the Fishman would have sounded better but if you’ve played it and didn’t like it so much I’ll take your word on it. What were you saying wood vs metal?? What did you mean by that I gotta know?? I’ve seen many of the video reviews on Standard vs ModDlx D18 and most edge towards the Standard. However I’ve got small fingers and the tapered v neck on my 28 ModDlx feels lovely. I just can handle the C shape necks on the standards!!!
You might like the sound of the Fishman better, I can't tell because I haven't played the anthem. I can say for sure that the fishman will sound less like your guitar than the anthem, but I'm not sure the anthem really sounds much like your guitar anyway... the other thing is that a fishman can connect to the computer and you can load other IRS designed to sound like different acoustic guitars, so if you didn't like the sound you're not stuck: you could find an ir in Fishman's Library that you do like. But it's less honest because your sound is computer-generated. The Anthem is more honest because it's not computer-generated, you blend together inputs from a Piezo and an internal condenser mic. ... I think you should stick with your anthem unless you really hate the sound of it. If you're just wondering if there's something better, nothing's going to be very much better so just enjoy what you have. But if you HATE the sound of what you have and it's ruining your experience with your guitar when you plug it in, that would be the only situation that would make it worth selling your guitar and buying the same guitar with different electronics. ... can you just install a Fishman in the guitar you have in a way that you could swap back to the anthem if you didn't like it better?
Just to be clear, when I had the fisherman aura it sounded great when I was running the computer modeling. The aura has a blend button that blends between direct Piezo sound (yuck) and the output from a little onboard computer modeler, which gave you a choice between 6 tones that are computer-generated to simulate classic guitars. The classic guitar simulations all sounded great, but the unit crapped out on me in this specific way: the "sound engine" that generated those classic guitar sounds went bad and I can only use 100% Piezo setting. The Fishman Piezo pick up doesn't sound any better than anybody else's Piezo pickup. ... the anthem it's not doing any computer modeling, it's honest tone that comes from a condenser mic blended with a Piezo pickup, and you can control the blend. The honesty of the tone matters to me now, but it's also worth noting that it's a little less delicate than the computer stuff fishman uses. I would not go so far as to say its robust, because all of these onboard preamps end up crapping out and that's why I usually recommend passive transducers. But if you made me bet, I would bet the anthem would last longer. ... when my aura crapped out on me Fishman told me to send it to them, they were going to fix it for $50, then they told me the sound engine was bad and it could not be fixed, offered to send me a lesser more generic Fishman preamp that would be a drop-in replacement. 50.00 wasn't a bad deal for that preamp, but it was just a straight Piezo so I could have just stuck with the half-broken aura and save to myself the money and the trouble. ... I hated the Piezo sound so much, I did research and tinkered and ended up installing passive transducers to the bridge plate under the bridge, and wiring them into the $50 Fishman preamp instead of the Fishman Piezo. I'm satisfied with it, I guess.
Say Billy i have a HUGE question for ya. Would you recommend the D18 ModDlx Fishman Aura over an LR Baggs Anthem? I hope you’re familiar with the Baggs pickup. I have the D28 ModDlx with the Baggs Anthem installed on it but I wanna sell it and buy the 18 ModDlx with the Fishman if it’s INDEED BETTER than the Baggs. Help me, pleeeeese..?????
I haven't played the anthem, but even still I would take the anthem over the aura. The Anthem has a condenser mic in there that you can blend in. The aura is just a regular Piezo pickup with modeling technology built into the preamp. I had a Fishman Aura in another guitar and it crapped out on me. Admittedly, it didn't sound bad, but I don't like the idea of acoustic guitar modeling. Why have a nice guitar if you're just going to let a computer model the sound anyway? ... if you were starting from scratch I would say get a K&K or other passive transducer setup, and then use a pedal preamp if you need a preamp. Since you already have the anthem, I say stick with it. At the end of the day I don't think any of these acoustic electric solutions really sound as good as the acoustic guitar in the room or via microphone.
You could learn to play first then make the decision
Har har har
You ought to do your research before going on air... Your stat knowledge is, well, embarrassing. Stick to playing because your salesmanship is substandard.
This should be pretty obvious for a lot of people on here at this point, but from my personal experience, ANY guitar that has been lingering in a Guitar Center rack for several years is bound to turn you off from it. They do not care for their instruments. They just let the guitars sit there and collect dust. Hell, there was literally a Fender Telecaster with a broken switch. (Which is not uncommon for them) The guitars age while they are sitting on that rack....but not the good kind. Guitar Center does not care for their instruments very well....at least not the location around here. Very rarely have I walked out of a Guitar Center with a smile on my face, and with nice equipment I bought in there.
It's funny you mention that, I actually did a few videos on that subject and Guitar Center in general. Here's the playlist: kzread.info/head/PLo2qPZaBmyM8kkOcKKiQNzv62ZviNKf1o&si=SVnji1xrBaghpdYI
If you get an adapter you can use headphones. I use them when I relax in my chair and play late at night.
Really!?! Which adapter?... I tried plugging studio headphones in there but the signal wasn't strong enough

Great Review! I learned a lot! I guess I’ll stick with my HD28…
Thanks! I actually found out that this is not a d16, but rather a D16 special. Basically it's an HD 28 with lower grade spruce, no herringbone, Satin finish, and the bracing is shifted or something ( but it is scalloped). I did a follow-up video on the same guitar if you're interested: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZJul2aqyp5iTfbw.htmlsi=XVBausm7FksAyZuS
I played one and it was amazing. I think it depends on the actual guitar. It’s not about price for me either. I play a $6,000 hand crafted 000. Thanks for the upload.
What kind of 000 is it?
@@rosewoodsteel6656 Manuel and Patterson. Sitka and Rosewood.
@@Christ-is-King- Thanks! I'll check them out.
@@rosewoodsteel6656 I seen a used 00 on reverb for $2,000. I think they have made around 125 guitars.
Plastic pins work best on most Martins
I wish u told how
This is a clip from the video where I teach how, you can watch the video by hitting that link right next to the little play button at the bottom of the clip
Sounds bad
I got this exact model a month ago and it is the best martin that I have played. I own the D28 Modern Deluxe E as well and i love it, but prefer the D18 MD. It is a canon. These modern deluxes cant be beat plugged in as well.
I was just thinking about this guitar again the other day and I think it would be my perfect guitar if it was a cutaway
Like that d18 you tried out much, much better. Taylor is always too brittle for my tastes.
Absolutely, the d18 was twice the guitar for three times the price
dunlop soulds too dull lol we all like different things :P
Dunlop makes a lot of different pics, some of them are brighter and some of them are darker. I don't think any pic is dull, but I would choose a brighter pick on dull strings. Generally I like darker pics especially with fresh strings. Not really a better or worse thing.
Mahogany back and sides, not rosewood. Great video!!
Thanks!
Just got this guitar for my 21st birthday but haven’t been able to play it as I’ve been away! This review has made me excited to get back and play it, thanks!!
Rock on!
So I see the HX effects, what’s your amp rig ? Because the HX effects is mainly a floor board with all your effects boxes inside. You still need an amp right ? Or am I wrong, I’m an idiot with the full helix flagship. I love it. 😊
At first I was using an HX stomp for dual amps in 4 cable with the HX effects, then I started using a UA dream pedal in the FX Loop of the HX effects, there are a bunch of videos on my channel on both of those setups... for the past few months I've been using a Kemper toaster as an all-in-one but I'm using my HX effects as a midi controller for it because I'm not ready to buy that Kemper remote ( Kemper videos forthcoming)
Sorry dude that’s a poor video. You should’ve talked a whole lot less and played a little better and a little more especially knocked out some good cords, some G9 C9 and let us hear what the fuck it really sounds like. By the way, I was in Guitar city yesterday and I played that guitar and I thought it was definitely not worth the price tag. It definitely does not sound like a Martin or a Gibson.
We are very sorry that you are not satisfied with the video, please see our customer service department for a complete refund

?
I would think an expert would play better.
Undoubtedly
Nice review. I wish you would have plugged it in so we could hear that sound and your opinion of it.
Thanks!... I think Guitar Center keeps an acoustic amp in there, I'll try to plug it in next time. Great idea!
Billy is the man!
The holes are for the under saddle pickup
Maple neck, ebony fretboard and bridge
Yes, maple neck, I remember that now, thought that was strange on an acoustic (not bad)
@@BillySoundFarm definitely different but I kind of like it. Feels like an electric neck
You reviewed the D16 special two months ago and said the D28 was a better buy but this D16e and D16 Special is essentially the same spec (minus the back depth)
Same D16 special in both videos, it was marked d16e mistakenly on the Guitar Center label and I didn't realize it in the first video (this one you commented on was the first). If I had actually checked the depth against another Martin D model I would have realized something was up... so technically I haven't played a D16 but I'm sure the shallower body makes a big difference. The D16 special is basically like an HD 28 with a satin finish and no herringbone, and lower grade tonewood.
@@BillySoundFarm my point is, you played a 16 special in both videos, but in the first video, you said it wasn’t as good as a D28. Then you flipped your opinion in the second video a few months later. So which is it? Genuinely curious, no criticism.
@@Cousin_Gregg well, in the video where I said a D28 was better, I was just going on my memory of a D28 and my warm fuzzy feelings. But in the video that I thought I would take the D16 special, I literally had played a D28 10 minutes before that... so I think my comments in the second video are more reliable with regards to any comparison
@@BillySoundFarm many thanks 🫡 love the channel and all the best to you!
@@Cousin_Gregg thanks!
Thanks for the review!
I really loved it while I played it, and I really like it hearing it back on the recording, but what I'm feeling now is less than love.
So, is it something wrong with it?
@@damiannoremberg7760 absolutely not, Nothing wrong with it. It's just not exactly what I would be looking for, though it's great. It is exactly what you pay for. It is a 900 guitar. It will sound, feel, play like a $900 guitar... There are $350 guitars that play like $900 guitars, and there are $3,500 guitars that play like $900 guitars, But this is a $900 guitar that plays like a $900 guitar. fair and square.
I have that guitar. It's made in Nazareth and It's BASICALLY an HD-28 without the Herringbone. But it has FORWARD shifted scalloped bracing like an Authentic '37. All solid wood, the back and sides are satin, the top is gloss. It has a simple dovetail joint rather than the usual standard. Comes with a gig bag (nice one!) Ebony bridge and fretboard. And with new strings rings and rings! I love it! Best deal on a Martin! I changed out the tuners to Grover butter beans, replaced the Tusq saddle with a Martin bone saddle and the pegs with Martin solid standard tortoise pins (like the D-28 comes with). Comes with a nice Fishman unit too. This guitar is the best kept secret on a Martin, along with a 000-16 StreetMaster 👍🏻
Yes that's just as I suspected, now I must seek out this street master one...
Thanks Billy!! You just sold one more :)) I'm definitely the tube amp guy that loves playing live an loud but doesn't wanna workout carrying amps that could crash because of a bump.
Cool, let me know how you like it!
Glad i watched this. Thank you.
I thought the red guitar sounded the best, though I can hear the liveliness of the un coated strings. That said, I love Elixirs on my particular guitar. I personally like the natural compression, it feels and sounds controlled to me, on my guitar. Thank you for the video.
Yeah I'm coming to the conclusion more and more that certain guitars like certain strings
@@BillySoundFarmyeah it’s an interesting thing. Based on your video I would not use Elixirs. When I got this guitar ($3500 koa) I was like ‘no way I’m using coated strings on it.’ I tried a bunch, and when I finally put Elixirs on it I knew from the first strum. I think koa and mahogany tops naturally damps out high frequencies so there’s less of a noticeable difference between coated and un coated, and the elixirs have a nice strong midrange that compliments the wood. A guy I jam with has a nice solid mahogany guitar with Elixirs which is what opened my eyes to them, they work on that guitar too. I don’t use coated on my electrics. Anyway I like your video style. Thanks again and keep rocking!
@@JoeEngineersThings thanks for the encouragement!
