I believe, for myself at least, the reason I got into VPN was how information is used by big tech and the government. - The 3-letter organizations have a compelling intelligence interest. However, after what we've seen over the past decade, we have proof that they target people politically, with no repercussions after they plead the 5th. It's really too bad. It undermines our own security. People in those positions should be required to waive the 5th, double the standard penalties, require full restitution, and no "errors and omission" protection, like which was denied to the Duke La Cross prosecutor because it was criminality. He lost it all, personally. - When my mom or a relative has a health issue, I am the go-to for my thoughts and to compile information for them. Even running Firefox strict, isolating cookies by site, using Firefox with private DNS, and DuckDuckGo, I would end up with spam along those lines in my inbox. My concern became that it would implicate myself as having these issues and impact my insurance and who knows what else. I throw TOR on top for good measure. - The other thing I use it for is when I'm traveling or living abroad where it works, but not as well as I had imagined. I was in a foreign country and a dishwasher went bad at home. The closest Nord servers were Chicago, a couple hundred plus miles away. I couldn't make the local appliance store's site to work so whoever hosts them must filter by either distance or because it is a VPN node. I have to set up remote desktop into the house to transact local business while abroad. As an aside, I drove to Walmart in the middle of the night (pre-covid) to buy a TV. 2 out of 3 credit cards were declined. All three were blocked in the morning. I had taken my old car and left my phone at home so that might have been it. Normally I WANT them to know where I am, here or abroad. - I don't know how to make the 54,000 email address thing work. I did try the the masked email thing a long time ago. What I learned was they refused me at signup for anything, it doesn't matter what the domain name is. What matters is who owns the email server. Self-hosting might be the only way there. Moreover it would be a full-time job just to keep that many email addresses straight and maintained. Segmenting works to some degree but burner emails don't. I definitely need a better strategy here and will be leaving my biggest spam magnets behind. - It's pretty hard to hide from big tech and AI and big brother. Who knows, the government might have their own ways of negating the VPNs and might own the TOR nodes. In Europe and Switzerland they learned that big brother got a hardware vendor that supplied the majority of the network infrastructure to incorporate a way for them to monitor that wasn't discovered for years. If there is a buyer, there will be seller as long as they can turn a profit. Governments and big tech have deep pockets and paying customers. - If you want a private conversation, use Signal. They might have the metadata but at least not the content...if your device isn't hacked. LOL!
