Hello Creatures! I'm a dad who's new to DMing in D&D. I'm new to D&D altogether for that matter! I have taken upon me to DM two different groups. One group is my son and my friend. The other group is for a War Veterans Association, so it's a bunch of US Army Vets. I have been having a blast so far. This channel is to bring you along on my journey of becoming the DM I am meant to be! Join me for a good and schwetty time!

What? You're saying the orcs and elves i rape from now on wont have kids? How could that be, why, thats the only reason i play D&D
Ah yes, let's teach children that weapons designed to kill harmlessly knock creatures out. It's not like internalizing that will cost fingers... or lives. I love that you are introducing your kids to TTRPGs, but if you (or more accurately your wife) don't want their PCs killing things, D&D is probably not the system to start them on. Remember, in careless hands, a shovel or a broomstick becomes a dangerous implement.
I started playing DnD with my wife and young son who have zero experience. I decided to use Nimble 5e as a simplified system and I cannot recommend Nimble 5e enough. It's made things much simpler and faster for everyone. Great job introducing ttrpg's to the little ones 😊
Glorious - love this so much
Thanks!
Why make a video before reading anything
Yeah, I was basing this off of reviews I've heard from people who have the book. It's brought up some interesting conversation. You're right though, looks like I jumped the gun. I completely misunderstood the half creature situation. I still raise an eyebrow at them changing "race" to "species" though.
I'm in the process of doing my recap of my session 1 for my 8 year old and their 10 year old friend. It sounds like you're doing something similar. With my 8 year old, I decided to set it up as a real world scenario that changes quickly and they are granted classes from the god Oghma. I'm so glad others are starting to share how to DM for kids. We tried a session 0 and it was a terrible disaster of distractions, then one of the players is not with us to play anymore... So our session 0 became a new game an session 1. Ah I'm so excited to follow your journey!!!! (I'll be creating a different channel for my journey. It doesn't really fit in with Ukulele...)
Nice! I'm excited to hear how yours goes.
@@Noob_DnD_Dad So far it's been good. We started with just a d20, and a d4 for damage. A goblin clan came to get them. It is taking place in Exandria and I'm allowing small meta gaming from the other mom because they're playing themselves. I figured that would be a super easy way to get into the game and figure out role playing. Of course, I now have a whole lore to this goblin clan and the king and why Oghma is involved....I guess that's part of being a DM... (Very new DM, this is my first game DMing, and maybe 3rd game total.)
That's so awesome. I like that the other mom is involved too. I've had so much fun with this and it's been great to see my 9 year old really dive in.
@@Noob_DnD_Dad I know your age ranges are different. Since we have an 8 year old, we're limiting the violence to whatever level they bring it to. I figure that's the safest route right now. I'll have to be careful with my recap videos because the mom supports me on youtube and I don't want her to know what's gonna happen next. LOL (But she won't see this comment so.... they'll possibly battle a baby harpy next!) We're limiting to about 2-2.5 hour sessions for attention.
@@katiukulele ok, I will try a 3rd time, youtube is apparently blocking my replies. Lets just say I showed my kids lord of the rings a little too early, so we have to tame down their violence levels in d&d... (there, youtube, I didn't describe anything scary, now let it thru!)
Awww that’s such a cute idea!
Thanks
The dropping of the halfs if actually beneficial to making more half species because its no longer restricted to the assumed half human. As for changing race to species, I think that's just WoTC catching up with every other rpg, Pathfinder has been using species since 2 started.
Ah, they made it sound like all halfs were gone. Thanks for clarifying.
People were actually sticking to exclusively half-humans? Huh
In my D&D venue, where lots of nee and varied people cme throgh, the race /species issue hasn't been an issue. People, players, realy have bigger issues to tinnk about. Moving forward, if people want to use species, then they say "species" and if they want to use race then they say "race" Personally, I like to say "base" as in "the base character" or the character base" And am excited to see how that base character changes with D&D 2024. Like, how will "background" encompass what used to be race? What does species look like now? I don't think it 2024 D&D wil be as intuitive as 5e; nor as ubiquitious. But it will be fun to learn for me as a DM
Thank you for your feedback. I am also excited to DM for 2024 5e rules. The Vet Group I DM for has pres-ordered all the books!
@@Noob_DnD_Dad I have ordered the books, too. It was a good deal. I facilitate a monthly game at my local store for new players and people interested in D&D. These are all pick up games that often have experienced players. Or, the new players quickly become experienced and some have begun DMing. I want to start the same thing for D&D2024 but it will be all players who want to get proficient with new rules. We'll have a rotating role of DM and participants will have to agree to switch classes every session.
@doyscherr that's awesome that you do that. Great idea to get people experience
I think the issue is the presumption that the other half is human. What names do you assign to orc/elf, orc/dwarf, or elf/dwarf? Listing only half of the ancestry is a little reductive.
Aaah, that makes sense. I feel like I may have been led astray. Thank you for your input
The new system allows for even more half-species than ever before. The original half-species were of the assumption that someone was half-human and half-orc or half-elf. The new rules (i.e., pick one set of gaming traits and choose physical features of both races) allows someone to be a half-elf/half-orc or a half-gnome/half-dragonborn or a half-tiefling/half-dwarf or whatever your heart can imagine from the humanoid species.
Waaat!? Man I did not receive that from the reviews of the book I have been watching. I would love to be completely wrong on this. THANK YOU. (But they changed race to species didn't they?)
@@Noob_DnD_Dadthey did, but many systems have dropped the term already (i.e., Pathfinder and Valiant).
@@politicalzen interesting. Thank you for sharing. I'm still getting into the hobby (read: lifestyle)
I got my nephew to start playing when he was 5, but we haven't played in over a year 😅 He wanted to be friends with everyone, even though he also always wanted to play as a superhero! I loved his limitless creativity the most.
This is so great. I cannot wait to get my one year old into DnD! XD “We’re bullies and we’re gonna fight you” is just amazing haha. All of these features you’re using to make it accessible to your kids is so special. I’ve been meaning to watch more of your content- thank you for recording all of these!
next time my 5e group comes up against a Lich he's going to say "I'm a bully and I'm gonna fight you!" that's awesome
@shadomain7918 haha yes! Let me know how it goes! 🤣
Such a great idea. Would love to get my daughter into this as well. Age 7
yea, makes me wanna do it right with actual purpose and an end goal that makes some kind of sense, instead of whatever that was that we got
Truer words have not been spoken.
🤣 right? Thanks!
I thought for sure you'd have the web burn all around them and do them 🔥 damage if they use fire while down in the mummy spider cave. A missed opportunity, maybe it was because it was all gooey that it didn't catch fire? Combat can be long, especially the more levels and abilities they have, how much time did it take for the four rounds of Combat with you? You lost a player for your son's group does he have any friends that might like to join in? It takes time to create characters that's why it's always handy to have some pre generated characters on standby because it takes a lot of time to introduced new players to a system, that's why, for a one time only players, I sometimes have just stat blocks like what a DM uses for their NPCs and monsters it's quick and handy and has all the details needed and if they decide to stay for longer then you just expanded to a character sheet. Also a little advice on being a DM you can become predictable and you seem to be homing in on fire a lot so your players could eventually get tired of everything is catching Fire. It happened to me with traps on chests my players always expected there was a trap on a chest. I had to change it up until I could catch them off guard again. I know you're a firefighter and you like the idea of how they will react and overcome fire problems but don't overdo it. You were saying you think they're getting too powerful for the frost dragon, I know you have a volcano that has erupted and you've worked that into the campaign and the frost dragon is the main "villain" of that campaign 🤔... but maybe it's not, maybe there's a fire dragon that's caused the erupting volcano to evict the frost dragon from the area, maybe that can be your BBEG who has pushed out the frost dragon and the group might have to form an alliance with the frost dragon to defeat the red dragon...... Sorry that's just my DM mind thinking of plausible ideas for why the volcano erupted. Improv is one of the greatest tools of the DM, keep up the good work.
Wow! Thank you for all the info and feedback. Yeah, I try to only have the fire spread if it could plausibly do so. It is making the characters think twice about when to use fire stuff.
huzzah!! making a dungeon is a great milestone as a DM!! the first dungeon I "made" was just me looking at the Wave Echo Cave's actual dungeon and going "hell nah i aint drawing all that!" and cutting out 70% of the rooms! but I like yours better! very MorkBorgish.
Very cool improv spider fight! Making travel interesting by adding an event or two can be really fun!
Thank you!
Congrats on successfully managing a large group like that! (and one made up of mixed temporary/permanent players at that!). You may have to change your name. If you've been able to run a session under those kinds of challenging conditions, there's a pretty good chance you've earned veteran (or at least adept) status. 😁 Glad to see you're having fun introducing others to the joys of the game. Keep up the good work! On a side note, don't feel bad about your cave map! At the end of the day, it's about what works for your DMing style, and what is the most fun for your group. If what you've created works well, then roll with it!
Thank you so much! I am wondering when I'll level up. I just passed 60 sessions run
You're right, it's hard to simplify 5e and it teaches you not only the rules, but how they interact. As long as the kids have fun, go for it. When they start getting silly and losing the story, that's a clue that you might need to change or eliminate that part of the rule. Well, not always, sometimes they're just tired, etc. But it's a thing to try to watch, I'm sure you've seen that already. Good luck!
nice work. I made a simplified RPG for kids here: docs.google.com/document/d/1vAccoVOpDxzgXvBY6EhAhsnggoK6S8qGcq42dVeXVrs/edit?usp=drive_link It's so simple it's not recognizable as D&D, but it lets the kids make decisions to create a story. I did this by asking "what's the least rules we need and still have it be an RPG?"
This is a wonderful idea and it seems like you're doing a really great job!! I'm excited to see your progress going forward, and maybe take some inspiration to run a campaign for my younger cousins!
4:05 removing proficiency bonus totally works, esp if you set a lower DC, and even lower if their character is good at it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dmqHlNihiZnPgM4.htmlsi=c6RV0F3rd9j9XPIl Roll high -> yay Roll low -> uh-oh You could draw on hp checkboxes so they can check them off Teaches counting and number recognition. This is a great family project. Pace yourself for longevity. May your oldest son one day take his turn behind the screen
good luck to you sir! personally i would go even more basic but i'll be interested to see how it goes!
This is a amazing book enjoy
Thanks!
@@Noob_DnD_Dad bigbys glory of the giants also really good I highly recommended both. Also get volos guide to monster and mordenkainens tome of foes don’t waste your money on monsters a the multiverse. If you want to add more fun race ability changes get multiverse but for that purpose only not fun monster changes. Also also 5e tools and d and d wikidot great free online d and d resources trust me.
You said a player stop the lightning by the boar ...is that with Counter Spell? or how? And as a playeri like a game with a brisk pace but not to fast that i or the group might miss something important. As a DM/GM I like to keep the Pace moving along, especially combat. There can be magic using player that are not sure what spell to use on their turn. So in combat when one player is starting their turn I tell the next player to be ready with whatever they are going to do. It helps.
Very good idea with combat! Thanks! Yes, counterspell.
They would have to offer a major bribe with a dc25 persuading Roll and if they succeed it will last only one hour maybe less which depends on what they want from the ogre.
Hmmm. Very good point. You'll see a lot more of Mort in future installments 🫣
Guest players can be cool as long as the regulars are welcoming or know them. You can give each guest a piece of lore that makes sense to their character that may or may not give the party an advantage on their mission.
Guest players can be cool, esp if your regular players are welcoming or know them. You can give each guest one piece of lore that may or may not give the group a tactical advantage.
Our guest appearances have worked out well in both groups I DM for so far
Hogs are super invasive.
Maybe we can get the players to deal with them?
5:32 as a DM, remember it’s all resources. If the sorcerer is counterspelling everything, he’s also using up resources. By all means, test the PCs strengths because most of the time they’ll feel like heroes, but the one time they “fail” will be an unforgettable encounter. Let the wizarding duals commence! If you find the PCs have a winning strategy (hypnotic pattern) and can’t figure out how to overcome it, throw the strategy at them and see how they overcome it. To add challenge: try a back-to-back encounter when they’re not at peek performance. When their pools of abilities are depleted, they have to get creative.
Would your wife get involved or would she be more interested in alone time? (My wife would love the latter, lol) Some old-school tabletop role playing games don’t do classes, but rather let inventory items define character class. In that vein of gaming, leveling up really only gives you increased HP. Some games that use only 3 stats will use the equivalent of STR, DEX, and WIL for the mental stats. Con usually with STR.
I think my wife would like the break. Too bad there's no way to also get the 1.5 year old in on the game and really give her a break.
@@Noob_DnD_Dad …short of being the giant that reeks havoc on your minis, lol. (I’ve seen pics of cats plopping down on a game table and that becomes the best quest to appease the giant cat.)
5:30 Imagine: just after this party completes this campaign, the next “front” comes: a small foreign army band comes, but Phandalin and their great aces hold the line. Such would be a great chance to show positive consequences of players actions. :p
I would absolutely love to invite you to my next 5E campaign I'm starting with my two brothers and our friends!
I would love to, but I am DMing for 3 groups and have kid #5 due in a few weeks, so unfortunately, I don't think it would work out. But thank you so much for the invite!
@GinnyDi
🙂
I’m interested in your fire mechanics. The group I’m DMing has started to use the grease spell and lighting it on fire. I was wondering if you had suggestions on mechanics for Fire and smoke for indoor because I foreseeing them using this tactic again.
I would love to compile it and break it all down for you! Keep an eye out
My comments seem to keep getting deleted hi I love hearing about this game Goodluck
This one didn't get deleted. Thank you! You being here is motivating for me to continue these videos! Thanks! Tell your friends 😉
@@Noob_DnD_Dad what content or advice are you looking for with the campaign? I have a lotta good third party content and official 5e stuff I can call out for ya if I may ask where ya looking for expanding ya library a books and materials?
@sambro6657 I am open to everything, honestly. Anything helps. Whatever you think may need useful after watching my videos
@@Noob_DnD_Dad well campaign setting. Module or monster guides what would you like listed first? Also do you have a favorite monster maybe there’s a 5e module involving it.
@@Noob_DnD_Dad well for monsters. Volos guide to monster, mordenkainens tome of foes, and the monster manual For extra monsters: dm dragonixxes monster manual expanded 1-2-3 and deadly denizens also I would recommend Nord games ultimate bestiary: the dreaded accursed or revenge of the horde. That vet group sounds like a bunch of weirdos... They don't even know what they want. Go fast here, go slow there. What a nightmare for a noob DM! :) (for context, I'm one of the veterans in this group)
Hey! Quit creeping around for spoilers! 🤓😉
DMing for you guys is a blast, and I always look forward to it.
THANKS for pre-ordering the new books for the Vet group!
My Brother is a Veteran and we also are huge into doing D&D. He's playing a Rogue Halfling Sniper Specialist in the game. So funny to see his character holding a huge kentucky long rifle as a 4ft Halfling. So funny whenever he's using the rifle!
@modelrailwaybackshop that is an amazing mental picture! Thanks for stopping by
Sounds like you all are having a great time! My main suggestion (as someone who started playing DND over 40 years ago) would be you check out a couple of other systems like Shadowdark m, DCC, or DC20 when it releases. Table top role-playing games are an absolutely phenomenal hobby but there is so much more out there than just the WOTC/Hasbro incarnation of DND
We are! And thank you I will. I'm still getting my feet under me with this one.
During one of my GenCon games my table got double booked and a bunch of the players were Marines from Camp Lejune. The scenario was a stealth mission to snatch a magic item from a temple, but they spent most of the session planning and attacking the temple guard houses!
We can always count on the Marines to attack the temple guard houses
@@Noob_DnD_Dad 🤣🤣🤣 Yep - forget the mission - kill the enemy!
To help tamper down your players group, look into the 4e mechanic of minions to give enemies more action economy/boss protection. They have all the abilities and features and do all the damage of a full monster, but only have just 1 hp. They never take damage on a successful save and usually do fixed damage. MCDM (Matt Colville) has their own 5e versions.....Xanathar’s Guide to Everything has formula/table (p.135) for appropriate magic item amounts and rarity (power).....be strict(er?) on the 3 item attunements only rule......Level Up's "Monstrous Menagerie" bestiary book has slightly beefed up 5e equivalents. I apologize if you already know about these or if someone else's post already mentioned them.
Thank you so much! I appreciate all the feedback I can get. No, I did not know most of that.
@@Noob_DnD_Dad Minions help balance the action ecomony of having a lot of PCs against a single bad guy.
@shadomain7918 nice! That makes so much sense! Thank you.
@@Noob_DnD_Dad Absolutely seconding the recommendation for Flee, Mortals!, MCDM has easily the best monster design I've seen for 5e.
@earlylevelfountainquaffer nice. Thank you
i don't know if you've mentioned but what are you planning after you're done with the essentials kit?
Well, originally, I was thinking the 3 digital sequels to Dragon of Icespire Peak... but after reading thru them, at least for my Vet Group, I'll need to read ahead and heavily modify it. I am not 100% decided, but I need to because they have almost completed the whole book!
If they watch this they're gonna know not to eat the seeds. 😏
I told them not to until our campaign is over since I discuss spoilers
