Do you remember the good old days when video games came complete and were made with passion? Are you sick of games full of micro transactions and paid DLCs? Do you miss the finite detail within video games during the late 90s and early 2000s?
This channel will be filled with childhood stories revolving around video games. From finding refuge in the many worlds of Final Fantasy to diving into the world of Metal Gear. The games I cover on this channel are games that impacted me as a kid and continue to do so today. I hope that people can relate to my stories and find comfort in them.
There will also be Retro JRPG reviews!

I don't know how many copies were sold but I can tell you I've only ever seen two copies of Jade Cocoon out in the wild ever. One at the small town rental store where I grew up that had a small but eclectic collection of PS1 titles, and the other has been sitting on the PS1 shelf at my local gaming store since before the pandemic. I grabbed Jade Cocoon off the shelf for a three day rental one weekend and marathoned it in fifth or sixth grade. Personally I think the story just kind of happens in the game with quite a few of the major events just kind of happening out of nowhere with little build up and the game suffers greatly for it, but outside of that it is wonderfully well produced artistically both visually and musically. That's kinda what I remember most, I always described it to people as 3D pokemon where you can stab them and fuse them lol The other thing I remember is ruining my main monster both visually and stat wise towards the end of the game, like one of the last dungeons. It's damage output and defense more than halved after a fusion and I was almost unable to catch a late game wild monster to replace it and then I had to spend time grinding that monster up which was very frustrating cause I had a limited time with the game and I had a really cool fire dragon/wasp thing and I fused it with something and it turned into an ugly gorilla thing.
@@baronvonslambert this sounds like your average jade cocoon experience lol. It certainly doesn't take much to totally mess up a monster that's for sure. I honestly can't remember what my end game team was. I feel like I pretty much kept the same monsters the whole game and always kept them as the base and would only fuse in higher level monsters as the secondary ingredient to a fusion. And yeah the games pacing isn't that great but I'll tell you what, there's something to be said about how they built out a whole world and story packed with lore in under ~25 hours. I think the key to getting your money/times worth out of this game is to talk to all the NPCs at the village after each event that happens in the forest The game is definitely top shelf in quality imo

@@StewTube ya I'll have to do it after we finish Popolocrois, but I deff miss this game. It really needs a remaster/reboot. Honestly 2 lacked something for me 😞.
@@berrypi3s why does popolocrois sound so familiar? And yeah jc2 was a joke lol
@@StewTube Popolocrois Montagari and Montagari 2 were PlayStation tactical RPGs inspired by fairytale. In USA they combined both games for the PSP and called it Popolocrois. Then on 3DS we got Popolocrois: a story of seasons.
That's such a unique name im trying to remember whatever I first heard of this lol
sorry I missed it, had a stupid long day, catching it now though! ^_^ :D
All good :] you didn't miss much!
"Beware of a certain senator..." Those were his last words. And he means senator Armstrong. He was the one who started the downfall of the Solidus Snake Administration.
Sounds plausible! Any sources?
@@StewTube "My source is that I made it the fuck up."
@@seanturner1197 dammit lol that woulda been awesome. Wouldn't have put it past kojima either lol
In the remake, machine gun kid needs to make reference to liquid snake when asks solid snake, "so you're 'is bruva innit? I knew a snake once, we were mates. Took part in that iraqi deser' mission not long ago 'e went' is way n' I took mine." And machine gun kid was formerly a member of the British SAS.
Keen eye for detail!! Yes this would also be badass. Liquid needs more lore and connections!
I knew this fact from metal gear ac!d 2. The genome soldier card has information about them being former mercenaries of outer heaven. Those poor goons... In a metal gear solid remake, there should be after selecting the option, "I love Metal Gear (MXS)" during the game all the soldiers who go into alert mode after discovering snake exclaim, "you! I remember you from Outer heaven! You'll pay for what you did!!"
I freaking love this idea! It's such a shame that none of the genomes ever say anything like that, but a few encounters like the elevator when the 4 dudes have stealth camo they say his name almost like they remembered him, there's also the dudes that ambush snake on the freight elevator and the dudes that block the path connecting the com towers, I always felt like these encounters were against guys that may have remembered snake! I know Johnny escaped shadow Moses and was working with the gurlukovich fellas and I noticed that a few of the gurlukovich dudes sounded American so it's theoretically possible that they were genomes that were rescued by gurlukovich from shadow Moses!
My favourite JRPG and the one which got me into the genre. Still listening to the soundtrack in 2024

I didn't realize your Extra Life team was shouted out by Solid Snake himself! That was a cool retrospective. It's funny how you mentioned people who share a similar hobby somehow not playing other series, since I've only ever played Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 as a child and could not get it to it for whatever reason, but also have a similar fascination with JRPGs. I've since played MGS1 and enjoyed it, and need to visit other games in the series. Look forward to seeing future retrospectives!
For sure dude! They are pretty interesting games for sure. There's so much lore. And yeah it's crazy to think that there's some dude that is a big of fan of suikoden as we are of final fantasy! Thinking about things like that are just wild
And yeah it's wild looking back at David Hayter doing that for us plus Donna burke! Can't say it was my team though I was just a noob back then!

wow good thing you finally finished it
It was way over due!
quick question what was the best place you found for grinding mp?
Grinding is weird in this game. You can grind random mobs but like the real thing your after is better weapons and new abilities which come from the dating. Each girl can give each character in the party a new ability with each new intimacy level. <----- this is what you need to grind
@@StewTube I know but I need mp to forge the new abilities and it takes a lot for all characters, been using the ability magical to increase mp but not sure which monsters are the best for it
Ah yeah forgot about that.....tbh I never really found any big special trick. Just don't run from too menu fights and by late mid game you'll earn more from tougher mobs. There's also a few tricky maze like dungeons you'll get stuck in and you'll end up fighting a lot of random mobs there. It's like a forest dungeon. Takes forever. Bottom line I would stress to much. As long as you don't run from too menu fights the time will come and you'll have plenty of mp to learn spells. Best advice: don't over level your intimacy levels as you will miss spells. Level 1 spell is only available while level 1 and level 2s spell is only learnable at level 2 etc so you will loose access to spells if you level up before learning Hope this helps!
Btw like 70% of the spells are useless lol just use a guide and plan accordingly so you don't waste mp on silly stuff

what a beautiful video
Thank you!
Cosmo from The Fairly Oddparents was Koris. lol
True that! There were a few other recognizable voices too!
I got this game when i was a kid, but my dad started playing it and wasnt too thrilled about the main character's personality so he made me trade it in. I got Brave Fencer Musashi so that was cool. Im finnally getting around to trying this game now and it's absolutely beautiful. The character design, visuals, the way they implement the hand drawn models to make you feel like youre in anime, this is truly a gem.
100% hidden gem! It's only like 40 bucks on eBay witch is mind blowing. This game totally takes me back to the 90s with it's goofy charm. And yeah not sure what to say about your dad lol. I mean.....meis isn't definitely not someone to aspire to be lol

There is and you hit the jackpot . Chirikof has EWR and probably other secret prototypes . It’s impossible that US doesn’t have stuff on that geolocation since that is an actual airspace from where RU missiles would come from. Im more interested how kojima knew about wolbachia parasite that acts like a virus and PCR gene testing back in 2013 when he narrated mgsV.
What's even weirder is years back you could go to Google Earth and type in shadow moses Alaska and it would take you there. I did a Google review on it and got thousands of likes and then when I made this vid the name of the island has changed and all the old data was wiped :') spoookyy
@@StewTube i know , kojima knows stuff
That's *NOT* the Darpa Cheif's actual face and the reason you know that is because when you see his decaying body in the torture cell which happens after Octopuses death he still has his face.
I may have gotten a little excited when making this lol. But still I betcha like 80% of the fanbase that didn't play twin snakes probably missed this whole face reveal thing lol
@@StewTube Yeah it was still a good catch

I don't know what your talking about :')
We must be very close in age. Was your demo of MGS Japanese audio only as well?
No I believe mine was in English!
Mgs as a franchise has long since gripped me with its extremely nuanced and profound ethical, political, and existential implications. Its gameplay since MGS2 has been full of extreme mechanical depth and exhilarating espionage. Despite all of this however the thing that always sticks with me the most is how all of those things culminated together to psychologically craft me into the person I am today in conjunction with the life experiences I was having at the time of first playing them. “We can tell other people about - having faith. What we had faith in. What we found important enough to fight for. It's not whether you were right or wrong, but how much faith you were willing to have, that decides the future.” -Solid Snake. Ultimately it is our experiences with the art; our subjective truth that transforms us, and you’ve captured that more beautifully with this video than I ever could have. I almost damn near shed a tear, and very few things have had that effect on me. Kudos to you, and I hope your channel grows exponentially. It deserves to. I genuinely thought I was watching someone with at least in the 10k to 100k subscriber range with how much of a quality video it was.
Thanks for the kind words! It's crazy how much certain games made us who we are. Metal gear is definitely one of those. As a young impressionable kid I think it was very important for both you and I to realize early in life that there are not only good guys and bad guys but the morally grey, and the morally gray can do much more damage. Also thanks for the kind words regarding my channel and the videos quality! I hope to grow over time. Sadly these types of videos tend to not Garner many views or gain traction, but God damn are they the most important story's to tell. <3
@@StewTube Legitimately metal gear set me on the path to my current political views. For context I would consider myself a Marxist, but the extremely anti-war and pacifist views of the franchise mixed with its critique of power and systems oriented my mind in a way that was critical of the powers that be and was oriented toward systemic analysis. Those orientations set up in my mind by metal gear is what eventually drew me to Marx’s work and in turn a much more advanced and nuanced view of how the world works. I’m still learning of course, but I would’ve never have been that interested in said journey and learning about history as much as I have if not for metal gear. Even philosophically metal gear oriented me toward creating my own values rather than being subdued by the values of others and that inclination drew me to Nietzsche (side note there’s a video essay somewhere on KZread that connects the themes in MGS with certain Nietzschean concepts and it’s very interesting; I reccomend it.) and Albert Camus’s philosophical works and they’ve in turn greatly influenced how I live my life. I don’t remember which dead intellectual said this, but someone said something along the lines of “art is the method through which the masses become philosophically conscious”. Nothing truer has ever been said and art has this effect precisely because of way it can attach to the person’s intuition and being in a way that philosophical analysis simply can’t. I definitely think there’s hope for your channel growing if you release videos of a similar quality on a more consistent basis. There’s this KZreadr called leadhead who has enough subscribers to where she’s made it her longtime career and she basically just does video essays on video games and occasionally music and content wise it’s usually thematic analysis being connected with subjective experience which is more or less exactly what you did here. (Side note she has probably my favorite thematic analysis of mgs2 and 4 on her channel. I recommend it.) Although the telling of your life narrative was more visceral than anything done in even most of her videos. That said there is a profitable niche for this kind of content on this platform; said audience just hasn’t found you yet.
Sorry it's taken so long for me to respond to this. I appreciate the kind words and I will continue releasing content like this! Here soon I'll be released more faster. So if you recall my story in this video..... I also had a group of friends in 1997-98 that I was able to experience the first pokemon games with and then I suddenly disappeared and me and my friends never got to say good bye. That's gonna make an awesome dear Pokemon video!
I also appreciate the kind words and encouragement! Content like this takes a lot of effort and time to make and without an audience the videos by themselves don't do very well. The kind words are all I have to keep me motivated! Feel free to check out my dear final fantasy video and my dear halo video!
@@StewTube I don’t have much of an experience with either franchise, but I definitely will given how skilled of a video essayist you’ve proven yourself to be with this one.
