The Coricancha is such an amazing place! It was the center point of Incan territory and the most important spot in the Incan Empire. When the Conquistadores arrived, they built a church on top of the Coricancha. This today’s Sto. Domingo church. While you visiting here, one way to distinguish between the stonework of the Spanish and the exquisite masonry of the Incas is to notice that the Incan walls are composed of perfectly fitted stones without any mortar in between. Whereas the walls built by the Europeans appear slapdash and are held together by gray-white mortar. The principle god of the Incas was the sun. The Coricancha is the Incan Temple of the Sun.

After the parade through the center of Cusco, all the people gather together above the city at the great Fortress of Sacsayhuaman where the sacrifice is offered. Everyone eats and dances and looks to the sky for omens of the future. The feast of Inti Raymi went underground after the Spanish conquest. But this feast marking the return of the Sun God, Inti, was re-instated in Cusco, Peru, in the year 1944. This modern revival of the ancient Incan festival was part of a much larger effort to celebrate and preserve Incan culture and traditions. Unforgettable!!!!!!!!!!!!!
