I was born on the island and spent most all my life living there. I didn't actually see the bridge swinging until my 30s. When I was young, when my my parents made off-island trips, they would always time their crossings to avoid the bridge opening times. So the "swing bridge" was a bit of a myth to me until I acted as a tourist in my own land to intentionally see it swinging.
