Being from Memphis and seeing Shawn play when he was 13 or 14 he was already better than 90% of the greats. Then see Ingwie I have to go with the Legend Shawn Lane.

Even if Shawn is technically superior (debatable, imo) I still enjoy Michael's neo-classical style and compositional skills way more.

I immensely grateful that we get both and don't have to pick. But if I absolutely had to pick. I'd probably go with Vic, partly because he's the GOAT and sentimentality. Vic changed the game. There's an entire generation of us that picked up bass because of him. Which brings me to Charles who is a member of the aforementioned generation. If there were no Vic there would be no Charles. But immensely glad we have both and don't have to pick one.

I mean this in the most respectful way possible, but in the years that I've been listening to bass players, I've never heard a solo that Marcus Miller blew me away with or even made me think "wow he's something special". Everyone online talks about how MM is one of the best, and I'm not saying he isn't. But almost all his solos are in slap bass, and frankly, that gets boring quickly. Even in my musical infant years when slap bass was all I wanted to learn, the bassist that blew me away was Victor Wooten. Maybe I haven't heard enough of MM's music, but I've watched many videos online of MM and I just haven't found one that I thought was at all very remarkable. I can't say the same for Jaco. Before listening to Jaco play, I always read about how he was one of the best. Then I finally made the effort to listen to Jaco. The first song I heard was Donna Lee from his first album and I was instantly blown away and couldn't stop listening to him play. I sat there and listened to the rest of the album. I wasn't even into jazz up until that point but his playing is just that captivating and virtuostic.

Even such absolute monster and nerdy guitar player in a best sense of this word as Guthrie Govan appreciates Yngwie. So naysayers are just silly, when they talk trash about Yngwie.

Jaco has that mythical Obi-Wan Kenobi status because of how fiery his life (and early death) were. Stanley Clark and Marcus (and others) kinda get stuck in his shadow because his legacy shines so brightly.

It might have been a painful process, but it was such a legendary scene! I don't think I'd be as much of a fan of Vai as I am if he wasn't in that scene.
