Hello bonsai enthusiasts! This channel is all bout my bonsai journey in the upper midwest (Minnesota) where it can be tricky to grow bonsai. We have a shorter growing season than most, but so many very impressive bonsai are coming out of MN, so jump on in. I hope to spread the information that I continue to learn day to day with you the viewer and look to learn from all of you. I absolutely love working on my trees and absolutely love sharing that with you. I hope you enjoy it! If you would like to connect with a bunch of people who have a ton of experience growing trees in Minnesota, check out my friends in the Minnesota Bonsai Society (MBS). Hope to see you there as well as being a part of Dave's Bonsai!

Congratulations 🎉❤🍾🥂
I love the Roshi I got from Stone Lantern during a big sale last Dec-January. I'm trying to find a very very tiny concave cutter
That pot is terrific! Fantastic dawn redwood forest!
Quick question. This seems more like a method to try and combat soil conditions that would not readily facilitate the fibrous and radial roots we love. But it doesn't answer the question of completely growing in a good mix. In theory the best conditions would be in the ground, not in a pot, and if in a pot, then the best environment we can provide it. Adding a bonsai mix on the top and leaving whatever you have underneath, may leave water pooling on the surface as the medium density and composition is finer. therefore, you have a watering issue, where you have to provide for the top more frequently than the bottom. This reminds of how in the 70's it was all the rage to add finer material into the mix and then later, adding stones at the bottom of the pot. Assuming the bottom is a good mix but a bit more organic, it wont really provide more nutrients. The aim of this technique is to gain fibrous roots and bring the tree gradually into a pot. I am yet to want to do this over an extended period. If its ready for my pot, its ready. I would pot it into a larger box and keep a bit more than usual. If I do this at the right time of year, i should not really be setting the tree back (unless we are reckless). So my question is, is this a solution to a problem that doesn't exist? What am I missing?
@@JonathanCrossland all great points indeed. I don’t know the answer. I don’t think most people will do this. I don’t think most people have large trees. Making a box would be my first choice. I did this one cause I had just learned about the process from a club member who had extensive knowledge of the source. So I tried. Mine but the dust in the end. I’ll never know unless I attempt again someday. I wonder if Nigel Saunders of the bonsai zone had success on his. It’s still alive, I know that. I’m seeing him next week, I’ll ask about it.
That second forest is real cool. Seems like the new shears are working out for you.
Now that is a cool Dawn Redwood forest.
❤ Wow!
@@primedforbeauty yeah…. I’m bummed the air layer didn’t take. But I’m trying to to save sone cuttings. Give it time. It’ll turn beautiful again.
@@DavesBonsai I am glad this beauty is getting her second chance at a new life as a Bonsai! I can see your vision! 🥰
Hey dave i was wondering do any of these tips apply to bald cypress? Iv been having a problem getting them to ramify .
@@Chris-oq6kn that is a great question. I do not have that answer. I’ll ask Steve on my road trip for he has some.
@@DavesBonsai awesome dave thanks! Cant wait to watch the trip.
Daggum, there was a lot packed into that video! Nice recap on the redwoods. Great run through on the birch. You can do things in one season that I can’t. Make sure Toby brings the drone on the road trip! Also looking forward to the traveling bonsai
Beautiful forest bonsai style. 👍🏾🙏🏾☕☕
great forest from Candice! I know you will make her proud!
We are going to have a Dawn Redwood pruning strategy discussion when your road trip takes you to my backyard. We’ll draw on what we’ve learned, both from KZread, and from our own experiences.
Great video dave. Redwoods looking really healthy. Hope your road trip goes as far as southern Ireland lol
I'll double-check my southernmost point . . .😀
Forests are looking great Dave. Thanks for sharing the pruning tips. Keep growing
Foisting 😊
Great tutorial!
Nice root system. Dr. Dave, chief surgeon in operating room 3, doing root surgery and repotting. Students bring pencil and paper to take notes.
It will produce new shoots. Mine was completely without leaves all winter and spring. I cut it down to about 1 1/2” from ground level. Watered it and placed in full sun. It started to back bud last month. Just be patient with it.
Shame about the airlayer Dave but i like how you are looking to the future. Enjoy your holiday :)
Can’t wait Dave 👊
Beautiful Garden, pales incomparison to my balcony. Did my own Tiny Tour video, I could show you if you'd like.

Very nice trees
Seem centuries ahead of mine
Oh-ho-ho…that was some fantastic root work, good sir. I was diggin it! I don’t doubt your decision, but curious on the thought process of a mid-year repot. Just treating it like a tropical?
@@baldyeti yes, it’s strong and figured I’d be fine. Some pros will say you can repot at any time as long as it’s healthy and you give good aftercare. Now this was a drastic root job, but I also cut out 80% of the foliage.
