In July 2017 we purchased a MotorGuide 55Lb 54inch GPS xi5 12 volt bow mount Electric motor for our boat. The following is our first impressions up to some 30 hours of use and how we fitted the unit to our boat. Battery usage is also discussed. To date our experience has been positive and we are very happy with the units performance. The last trip we did was up river flicking lures in the side creeks and it was so good to manoeuvre ourselves around. We fitted the unit ourselves, my son being an auto electrician and both getting our teeth around aluminium welding. Apart from the mounting plate we built a battery box under the floor and our total cost for materials was about $20 using offcuts from the scrap steel shop and offcourse a bit of paint. $150 went in VSR, fuse unit, Anderson plugs etc. 100AH sealed battery cost close on $300. Cheers and hope you get some useful info from our experience.

Is this a 12v?
Mate, this is just what I need. Awesome amount of help. Got a Quintrex 430 fishabout and I'd like to fit one of these to the front but the windscreen is a bit of an issue. This fits in with what a guy I've spoken to wanted to try and I think this will really help. Was also trying to decide between the MG and MK, so your other vids have helped there, too. Thanks for making the effort. Much appreciated. Cheers PP
Thanks for this. Trying to decide MK or MG. This helps. Just picked up an FS9 Lowrance so it will hook up to one of these. Next to work out a welder to put a plate on the front of the quinnie. Thanks for the review. Cheers PP
Hey mate hows the sounder going? im thinking of getting one myself are they worth the coin?
@@solomoncurran9577 Hi SC. We are still in lockdown here mate, so I haven't used it! Got it rigged up and I'm just finishing the wiring for the Lowrance. Hope to have it out in 2 weeks. Sorry I can't tell you more. It looks great, if that' anything. I've come across quite a few keen fisho's who are changing over from MK to MG. I think it depends on which fishfinder you're using, really. Good luck with it. Cheers PP
Ex Queenslander here, just ordered the same unit for my similar size boat here in Canada hoping the 55lb will be enough to handle the current of the St- Lawrence river where I fish. Thanks for sharing

This was posted February 2018 , looking at buying one of these xi5 have any problems still going strong ,
Hi there! I d like to ask what is the length of the boat?
hi, our boat is a 4.15 metre alloy hull. We were in some strong current this week and it held us but was working hard. Still impressed. I recently say a guy at the boat ramp with a 5.5 metre fibreglass half cabin with the same motor and he was happy with its performance however in strong winds and current he did have some difficulty. Cheers
I know you said the humming noise went away, but did you contact Motorguide and ask them what it was? Good video with honest feedback..cheers
Thanks D o for your feed back. No we didn't mention it to the dealer as it got quieter. You would notice it more when it was on full power. Making larger holes and the rubber washers could of helped also. I haven't used it in almost 2 years as I'm overseas. However I'll be back for a few months late next month and hope to give it a good work out. My son hasn't been able to get out on it as much as he would like either. We now have the sounder hooked up to the motor guide.
What are the specs on your boat (length, weight, beam)?
Hi Josh. Our boat is only 4.15 long. The beam is 1800. Roomy for its size. I’m not sure what it would weigh but it’s a heavy brute with the full floor and and 40hp 4 stroke Suzuki on it. It has front and rear casting decks and live bait tank built in. I would think that it would be around. 500kgs. It’s a Seajay boat. We’ve been about 70 klms up Fraser Island and 20 out to sea in her on a good day. Hope that’s been a help.
@@Marisol-wr9hi thanks!
God bless u.Thanks for the review.

What battery size do you have mate AH?
Hi snowjack13. We are running a 100 ah battery. For our boat that gives a more than a days running. We’ve been on overnight camping trips where we fished all one day and half the next and we never went out of the battery indicator light. We do have it connected to the motor electrical system through a VSR which does put some charge in the battery while the boat motor is running.
I've got mine hooked up to my hds gen 3 i hardly ever use the remote
Thanks for your comment M H. We are planning on updating to a TI or Carbon so we can link it all together. But for now we have to be satisfied with the Elite 5x.
Great vid mate. I'm actually thinking of buying an electric motor for my tinny, was originally thinking on a Minn Kota, but think I'll go with the Xi5 instead. Can you tell me what the rough measurements are (length and width) of the base that mounts to the boat?
Hi Craig. We went through the same but in the end the price pushed us to the Motor Guide. We are not sorry we went that way. They are both good units. The Easy Lift thing looks like trouble to us. The motor guide isn't hard to retrieve. Lowrance TI or HD units will pair with the motor guide. Only downside is the cable costs an arm and a leg. The mounting area is 400x240. On video #3 you can see some photos of our mounting plate. We welded it on ourselves. Our bow top is rounded which was an issue in deciding where to fix the mounting plate. We decided to go for looks and we are supper happy with our effort. Using it to flick lures up creeks for flatheads or threadfins is amazing. Sooooo good. Battery usage is excellent. Video #4 comments on that in more detail. We are running a 100 ah battery. Cheers
Marisol Cheers for the reply mate, I'll definitely have to check out your other videos. Think I'm sold on the Xi5 though. 👍
God bless you! Very useful and extremely rare information.
Thanks Arnis,
How big is your boat ?
Hi Miges. it's just a 2005 SeaJay 4.15 Escape with a 40hp Suzuki 4 stroke fitted last year. Has full floor and cast deck, side consol so it is a bit on the heavier side.
Can I ask what size boat you have?
John X it’s a Seajay escape 4.15m
How many Amp is you battery??? Thanks for the video by the way 👍
Hi Kenny, Thanks for the comment, the battery is 100 amp. We were super impressed with how long it lasts,
