beautiful as your wife
Hi Matt. I'd like to try your technique in an upcoming painting. It seems slow, but your results are beautiful. I can draw and paint fairly good, but always struggling with hard edges with acrylics. I'm also going to try open acrylics to do a grisaille before the actual painting with glazing.
I learned something new about glazing I never knew it was set up so fast.
Fantastic!
love it😊
Kudos...you did really well
Amazing work! Looks like a photo.
Thank you!!
Wow 🤩 I feel like wants to learn portrait from you again..😊

You did an amazing job on that! Love watching you work on it. And of course always enjoy the classes! For people who haven't enrolled in your classes online I highly recommend it! ❤
Thanks, Allen!
Your wife is beautiful and the painting is beautiful
Thank you!
The painting is beautiful Matt, as is your wife, of course. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, skill, and inspiration.
Thank you so much, Fred!
She’s lovely! Like an angel, exquisite. And you look great with the new hair and beard.
Thank you for the kind words!
Defenitlly a master piece to call, this portrait painting of your beautifull wife Matt! You can be proud of this one!
nice. enjoyed
what's that on your pallet that you're mixing in with the colors? slow-drying medium?
No. It’s matte medium. It doesn’t slow down the drying time at all. It actually speeds it up because it makes the layer thinner. It’s acrylic without pigment that dries to a flat, clear finish. I use it to create translucency glazes-layers of small amount of paint mixed into larger amounts of medium. It helps create smooth blending, vibrancy, and depth in my paintings. I also don’t lose the form and likeness from my sketch, because I can still see it underneath the paint until the end of the process.
Thank you for sharing Matt. I know this is going to be beautiful as all of your paintings are!
My pleasure, Mark! Looking forward to sharing more. Thanks for the encouragement.
Good bless u
👍👍💕
So enjoy watching you paint. A few weeks ago I did a painting of armor and added a lion. Love your take on this.
Excellent! May God bless you in that painting. Armor can be challenging but a lot of fun, especially when you get the reflections in. I hope this tutorial helps.
Could you send me a link to your muddy skin tone guide?
You are wildly talented, this is photorealistic.
Thank you! God gave me the desire to draw and paint, and I was blessed to have people in my life who encouraged me at a young age to pursue art!
Thank you for the information 😊
You did really well today
I noticed you put people in general in a favorable light, not putting wrinkles in or a fault . I noticed you don't put in sun bleaching but yellow. I noticed this with other artists also. Is that something you learn in training like at MIAD or in college?
What a lovely lady
Thank you so much for making and posting this video! This is exactly the tutorial I've been looking for!! 🤙🏼
Great! I’m glad to hear that. Thanks for letting me know.
You should accept donations, thanks etc. That way people can help you and thank you for your effort
I’ve had a lot of people ask about this. So I just need to set up a Patreon page!
Amazing!!!
This technique is great for acrylics
Amazing! Thanks for the tips. I’m working on a memorial portrait…Angel in white robe…and struggling with the robe. Thank you so much!
You are so welcome! Glad the tips help
There is in fact not a link to said value chart in the description nor in the comments as you say in the video. Nor does the website seem to, which is the only link out of the million links in the description that I could imagine it being. If it is on the website it is not clear how one should know that it is. On the website it isn't on the page the link takes you to, I cannot see it labeled anywhere and it does not appear under "resources" which seems the most appropriate. Searching the site gives 0 results. If you would like to share where I can find it that would be great. thanks
Hi Shinra, thank you for pointing this out! I’m having some issues with the forms on my website and hopefully I can get it figured out soon. Thanks!
I just tried your technique on an oil painting from the 70's with a small hole. It worked very well.
It’s very nice that you made this video. A few years ago, I had to repair one of my acrylic paintings that was damaged by a gallery. I had to do a lot of research to find information on how to do it. The method was similar to what you are demonstrating and it worked well. I would be reluctant to put any “lean” acrylic medium over oil no matter how dry or old the painting. I would probably just apply thicker oil paint as I was touching it up. God is good, ALL of the time! ❤
Yes alla prima is preferable
Hi Matt! Great quick-study! How do you keep your paint wet? Do you use an additive of sorts??
Thank you! I do not use any additives to keep my paint wet. Just a little matte medium to keep things fluid. I layer everything to blend. This portrait doesn’t have much blending it it though, because it’s only 30 minutes of work. If I invested another hour I would go over what I did and blend it more with layers and matte medium. I like the quick drying time of acrylic and I make it work for me.
@@fineartbymattphilleo Thanks, Matt! Blessings.
happy independent day to you and to all American people. May Allah spread his peace around the world, so people can live together without hats and discriminations. this portrait is very close in its position to my son's portrait that I'm working on. I'm glad that you chose image like this. building skin tone is very difficult for me especially in the light area because it turns to chalky with me, i tried to avoid that but I kept struggling. once i chose different light color it turn too far from the original photo.
Thank you for the kind greetings! I am thankful for Jesus! He has brought peace to my life and He brings it to others as well. “For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility…” (Ephesians 2:14) Yes, skin tones can be difficult. When creating lighter areas in your portrait, don’t forget to add warmer colors, not just white to whatever midtones or darker colors you are using. That will help a lot. Hope this video also helps! Be blessed!
