I grew up fishing all over Kansas chasing largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish! When I was in high school I discovered fly fishing and all the trout rivers in Missouri and Arkansas! After graduating from KU in 1997, I moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to be a park ranger and fish for trout every single day! I own a drift boat with a friend and chase trout all over Colorado and Wyoming. The last several years I have taken the family on extended vacations in Florida chasing Red fish, Pompano, and the latest obsession: Big sharks on conventional tackle kayaking out the bait! Oh, I’m also a tennis coach here in Loveland, Colorado and run overnight adidas tennis camps at Colorado State University! Like, share, and follow along for tons of fun, educational, and informative content! Thanks for looking!

I been stocking that pond with brown trout for years
@@gifzilla1818 aha!
@@gifzilla1818 Not sure if I would advertise that, isn’t that illegal?
They'll do the same thing they did to Lone Tree. They'll sell enough properties around it and make it private. All the ponds I used to fish and all the fields I used to ride motorcycles and run through have fences around them. Its know wonder kids now days can't get out and do anything.
@@homiesapien828 that’s a really good point…..I bet you’re correct and that sounds much more damaging than You Tubers like me “ruining” spots
@FishOnwithCoachSteve I think you're kind of missing the point. It's not individuals that are ruining all these spots where you used to be able to do all this fun stuff. It's society getting greedy with being free. I grew up in larimer county and spent most of my time exploring trails/paths that the city has now put pavement on and charged taxpayers to use... I'm pissed. And the more people that enjoy it the more it'll cost to use.
@@homiesapien828 I totally agree 👍
Yeah, but TPC's new golf course was like super important, dude... what a sad world we live in
Thanks for the video. I’m trying to learn as much as I can before I make the trip up there in mid august. Hopefully I can hook into my first grayling!
@@westoangling Thank you for the comment! The key is light line and small presentation. The water is clear, but they are easy to catch with small baits and small flies. I love the double nymph rig on the fly rod with a strike indicator with two nymphs size 18 or so. If you see rising fish switch to dries and if you can’t figure what they are taking on the surface throw a wet fly to the rise! They will take it! If there’s a chop on the water with some wind you will do best …..if there’s no chop make sure to twitch the flies
@@westoangling oh also the hook set is a feel thing….it is a lighter hook set compared to trout since their mouths are so soft
@@FishOnwithCoachSteve awesome, thanks for the tips! Can’t wait for it, will explore as much water as I can while there but most excited for the chance to catch these guys!
@@westoangling go crush it! I keep things simple on this channel….its not rocket science to catch what is a bucket list fish for many!
I didn't know u can use traditionally sof plastics with a fly setup that really cool
@@esjac619 Thank you! That was the point of this episode for sure…doing something different that was extremely productive (although they were small fish)! Anything heavier would not work for casting very well….but something small and light like this was perfect for the fly rod that I used
@@esjac619 what’s more fun than catching a ton of fish on a 8 1/2 foot 5 weight fly rod (when you normally would use conventional tackle)? It was a fun experiment for me for sure
Just have to hope there’s enough forage for the bass to keep growing

Cool video, congrats on catching a grayling. Fished there a couple of years ago with spinners... but didn't get a bite. Still the view was awesome.
Thank you! I have never had any luck with anything other than super tiny flies. I have never caught one on spinning gear or conventional tackle. It is a gorgeous spot! I certainly tried to keep this simple and show everyone that it can be rather straightforward to catch these things, thanks for the comment! Keep fishing!
What kind of fish is that?
Arctic Grayling! They are really cool and pretty fish, I did a full episode that day if you’re interested in seeing more

Wind from the west, fish bite the best.
Love it! It’s so true ….
I want to get into fly fishing and I was wondering if you have any suggestions on reels and rods for beginners
Keep it simple and keep it affordable….reels just hold the line, and you can get a decent fly rod almost anywhere. I have mostly Orvis equipment, but also still use a real cheap and old Cortland Rod and Reel and still love it! I would start with floating fly line and a 5/6 weight rod for all purpose and all species. My favorite fly shop is St Peters in Fort Collins for just phenomenal customer service and support….but you can buy a starter rod and reel from almost anyone and anywhere. Go cheap if needed, it will get you going just fine
@@FishOnwithCoachSteve thanks
www.orvis.com/product/clearwater-fly-rod/25SP.html - I literally bought this rod an hour ago
Okay I just started fly fishing. why's your line around your rod like that.
That’s what the other guy said, that literally just blew over….I fixed it right after this video lol ….that’s where wind can be frustrating but the fish turned on when it got rough!
Good luck and have fun! I have 14 full length episodes so far and the majority are on the fly Rod! Keep fishing!!🎣
@@FishOnwithCoachSteve okay I thought it was some sort of method to keep the line out of the way or something. and thanks it is fun right now the melt is too high for river fishing been doing several Colorado reservoirs and lakes.
@@shaggy420ism yep although you can still fish rivers in runoff….I use weighted streamers with the fly rod or heavily weighted jigs with spinning gear (like a gulp minnow)
@@FishOnwithCoachSteve I'll have to try weights once I get better at not snagging bushes.
Did you have a specific reason for looping your line over your rod and then through the guide?
Oh haha, no! I fixed that right after it happened and didn’t even know it looked like that here…..that’s where wind can suck! 😊
Yes it can
So fun to watch... i'm a bit less nimble than you on slippery rocks, etc., so not sure i'll fish it, so it's nice to see others there enjoying themselves.
I hear ya! I slip all the time on those rocks….I don’t mess around with it during runoff or in deeper water
That’s a yellow bullhead that’s a nice size
So fun to watch, your kids will be lifelong fisherman! So nice you teach them about fish, besides the catching part.
Thank you so much for the kind words….sometimes it needs to be all about the kids for sure, and throw in some education
Finally someone that knows were the barbs actually are 👍 most people try telling ya its the whiskers when its the fins same goes with channel catfish too btw for those of you who dont know
Thank you, appreciate the comment brother! Keep fishing!!
@@FishOnwithCoachSteve and if you want a good cheep catfish bait use the magic catfish doe bait with a spring treble hook they have multiple flavors like liver and cheese ect and there's no refrigerator needed and it cost about 3.15 a bag give or take with taxas and inflation and it can be found at Walmart i use it and caught a 5 lb catfish best of all turtles are less likely to hit this doe bait vs traditional cutbait or real liver
@@matthewschipper2023 thanks, we will try it!

How did you do at delaney buttes lakes?
I haven’t gone this year but I have huge days at north and south Delaney in past years ….North had a bad winter kill 2 years ago and I don’t know how much it’s recovered actually
Hi! I moved from AZ to CO two years ago and just got into fishing. I got a basic spinner rod setup and have had difficult time catching something here. Now that it’s warming up, what do you recommend as bait? How do trout behave in warmer water? Thinking of going out to horsetooth this week as I have just tried dowdy lake, Watson lake, and local FoCo ponds.
Welcome! Thanks so much for the question and the message! The trout are still hitting at Horsetooth for sure. Since that’s a higher elevation reservoir, the water is cooler and the trout stay active. Trout are more lethargic in warmer water, but that’s certainly colder up there than somewhere in eastern Colorado! I would also revive them longer and be careful on the release. If you don’t keep them, they need more time to recover in warm water after you land them. You could obviously go powerbait or salmon eggs on the bottom, for lures I would go with a 3 inch gulp minnow on an 1/8 ounce jig head or a spinner like a rooster tail or panther martin. You could do all of that easily from shore and work the rocks and the trees. Good luck!
That was like me as a kid, the difference is, there wasnt any fish in the pond and i knew it but still wanted to fish
Sounds like you have the addiction! Keep on fishing brother!
