The Pattnulkar community to which Walajahpet Venkataramana Bhagavatgar belonged aren't Brahmins. They claim to be Brahmins today but in all probability were either Vaishyas or Shudra weavers who claimed to be of a higher caste when they migrated down south. This is clear from the fact that their original gotras are not found among Brahmins and they have no history of belonging to a Veda pravaram or studying the Vedas.

Nayak, like Deshpande, Deshmukh, Kulkarni etc. was a designation; it is weird that going by this appendage to his name, Srinivasa Nayak...the later day Purandara Dasa was considered a non Brahmin, by the narrator.

Excellent lucid talk by Sriramji. Congrats. I wonder about the term " veracity". I am unable to find differences among " kAveri thatasthitham", vegavati thatasthitam and tAmbrabharNi tatastitam to doubt about the hemavati composition. Nobody other than MD could have used the term ' sharade' (other name of maathangi, incharge of sarva rogha hara cakra ) in the composition "Akhilnadeswari Rakshamam.." In dvijAvanti. Aptly he uses the words " lambodara guruguha pujite" We Indian, especially Tamils are conditioned to believe only documented scriptures. Vedas are preserved for millenia only through transmission bybword of mouth. Was " kumaudakriya", not his creation? We learn that even Prof. SRJ was of the same opinion. He questions the veracity of the raga " navaratna vilasam" attributed to MD.

So very nicely put together! For me the revelatory moment in Hampi was when I was looking down at the virupaksha gopuram from the hill nearby and the githam kunda goura… hemakuta simhasana just sorta came to my mind. These associations make our traditions all the more authentic for those of us who are separated by such a gulf of space and time from its origins.

@mohanthyagarajan870610 ай бұрын
Muddu is the correct word meaning " young, small.." in Telugu / Kannada as against the meaning pearl in Tamil.

I did not look for logic, but what the family named him as, which is the correct way to pronounce his name. As per the legend, he was named after Muthukumaraswami of Vaitheeswaran Koil. As far as I know, no one seems to be named Mudduswami either among Kannadigas or Telugu people.

At 40:08, V Sriram narrates the legend that the Viththala statue from Pandharpur was brought to Hampi around 1550, and Jnandev's grandfather took it back to Pandharpur. If the reference is to the most famous Jnandev in Marathi line of saints, he died in 1296. Sant Eknath lived in 16th C, wiki says from 1533 to 1599, and he helped revive some of Jnandev's poetry.
