    I had two Trans Am's. One ('75) had a 400 engine with a 4 speed. I think it was net rated around 180HP. It ran pretty well, but certainly wasn't a tire burner. I drove it one weekend and on Monday, I was hunting parts. It probably wasn't the right sequence, but the first thing I did was get rid of the exhaust system and replace with headers and dual exhaust. That in itself made performance MUCH better. It was better than I imagined! Next it was heads, cam and carb. I found a set of ram air heads in a local parts yard. [Fun fact: original compression ratio was 7.6 to 1 !] I bought a Crane Cam 9779068. I sat a 750 Holly on a edelbrock aluminum intake. I tuned the distributor with different weights and springs and a points-free Mallory Unilight. Oh and changed the rear to 4:10. I cannot emphasize the mountains of torque and horsepower this engine was now making. This just goes to show what a 400 was capable of without government mandates.

  • @thrashed22
    @thrashed2210 ай бұрын

    Good move on the intake. My uncle replaced the intake on his as the original apparently was not as good as the earlier intakes. I've got a buddy now that specializes in these engines and if you did a rebuild, would likely use the same heads, but up the compression with pistons. Luckily 75 was the cutoff date for smog rules in California. Too bad they don't do the 30 year rolling like they used to. Or maybe it was 20, I don't remember.

    @@thrashed22 Just for the heck of it, I was going to install Tri-Power, but the HEI distributor wouldn't allow clearance for the intake manifold. Ah the good ole days!

    I ended up selling the Firebird after I moved to California as there was no way it would pass smog at that point. A family bought it, had it painted, gave it to their 16 year old son who totaled the car. I at least pulled the engine(before I sold it) and it still lives in my old Camaro in Indiana. I put a 305 in it before I sold it, still the kid wrecked it. Yep, built that 383 in 1990, and even now in 2021, I can still pull the car out of the garage and run 12's with it.

    I don't know how the Americans can allow so many people in the start line area. In the UK only a few authorised people who need to be there are allowed in the start line area. When a car explodes and kills people or seriously injures them maybe the US authorities will think again. Far,far too dangerous having all those people at the startline!

    @David D'Anna David I guess what I should have said was. Rear engine dragsters are not Nostalgic to me. Anyway It isn't something I would've expected to see at a March Meet. Same thing goes for those Gassers I saw. Big Wings are a no no here back East. Regardless still nice to hear the cackle of the engines while it's 30 degrees outside here.

  • @thrashed22
    @thrashed224 жыл бұрын

    @@outdoorfuninthesun2393 I'm with you on that. I've gone to some nostalgia events and a lot of the cars running are the typical bracket cars you would see at any dragstrip anywhere. For rear engine cars, you can tell the ones that look modern. I think they all have to have duel bars across the head and the old ones did not. That pretty much ruins the nostalgia part.

  • @thrashed22

    @David D'Anna I've been lucky enough to run my Trans Am at El Toro in 2012 I think it was. They setup a road course, an autocross, and a short drag strip, with a U-turn and head back to stop in a box. It was a great time. Too bad about that place.
