I bought it, but i sold my ally and am waiting for the Ally X 😂
That's a great idea. It comes with a 2280 drive which is awesome.
I purchased an asus proart studiobook a few months back. Recently I had to get it repaired because there was liquid metal all over the motherboard and ram. They said its not covered under warranty because I put a m.2 drive in when I first got it. A warning to people getting laptops with liquid metal, get the extra coverage.
That is really messed up. I would fight that. An m.2 upgrade doesn't disturb the cooler. If it was me I would push back and if they don't refund it I would reach out to gamers nexus. He is currently covering topics like this.
@@StuballzTech I’ve definitely thought of doing that. The best I’ve got from them is an update on the repair. It’s been a month and they haven’t started on it yet.
Just got my ally in the mail today! I want to do this mod but I don’t want to cut the back plastic and I don’t want the ssd to overheat. Is that an issue if I don’t put a heatsink?
Congrats on getting it. Gen 4 nvme really do need a heatsink for optimal use and longevity. Asus shouldn't void your warranty if that is what you are worried about. ( look into games nexus) There are some ultra slim heatsinks ok amazon you can look into that may work without snipping the back standoffs. Good luck and let us know if you find something that works.
There is one thing I don't understand: If we replace the SSD, can the original Windows be installed again? The first windows key that was installed when we bought it?
If you use asus tool, asus gives a key which iassume is the original.
@@StuballzTech thank you so much
I fried an Hp laptop using liqiud metal never again you are asking for trouble
Thanks for the comment. PTM7950 is such a good alternative
Cloning is much easier. The ssd enclosure is only 12 bucks…
Thanks for the comment. I was just trying to minimize the cost.
Never in my life have I used any ESD whristbands tho... I dissassembled hundreds of laptops and smartphones and all that. Never had any issue 🤷♂️
It is good practice but most people don't wear them. I feel like I need to advice best practices so I always suggest.
hi .. i like to do this mod.. but i have qquestion.. can i use my corsair mp600 pro lpx on this mod? the one with heatsink
Thanks for the comment. No that heatsink will interfere with the back plate
@@StuballzTech thanks.. can you recommend me some good nvme for this mod? idc any prices.. i just the best compatible
hello, i just got the 3 items to do all this that's coming the next day .now when it comes to the part where you have cut the plastic on the backplate shell it is necessary to do that or is it a preference?
You will have to do it if you put a heat sink on your drive. Without a heatsink you just want to make sure the back panel doesn't contact your drive.
@@StuballzTech Thank you, also im assuming the heatsink in the video is 2mm? cause thats what i bought so it can fit in nicely
I highly suggest low profile. 2mm should work great
@@StuballzTech installed it, Works great more Storage for the next cod games
Ya it is easy enough I don't know why they ship that way.
The issue is incorrect application of liquid metal by the manufacturer, such that it doesn't 'wet' both surfaces and overcome surface tension. LM, applied properly, is unbeatable. I did an experiment last week on my freshly delidded 14900KS at 320W direct die cooling on an external MoRa 420 cooler. Kryonaut paste was literally 20C worse than Conductonaut Extreme! Yes, good modern pastes negate pumpout and are rated for anything up to 8 years but they don't come close to a properly applied LM. As long as the cooler is nickel plated as this Asus one is then you won't get the 'alloy/absorption' issue of copper. It would have been interesting to see the results with a *proper* Conductonaut application.
Thanks for the comment. I agree proper application would help drop tempatures. I just don't feel like in consumer laptops it is best. Do you feel conductonaut extreme is the best lm? And have you ever applied to a laptop that goes through lots of vibrations? I would be interested in your experience
@@StuballzTech No experience on laptops, but I have seen other people address this problem on laptop coolers by reapplying LM. It obviously depends on the flatness of the cooler (the die should always be flat because grinding is the last production process). When done properly you use the minimum amount of LM to just cover the die and contact patch on the heatsink making sure to 'break' the surface tension of LM to die or coldplate. If it doesn't want to stay coated then it needs cleaning and reapplying (I've had to do it 3 times on my 14900KS to get optimal temps and I thought I'd cleaned it properly). Only ever used Conductonaut and Conductonaut Extreme.
Does it still work? Is there overheating?
It still works great. No overheating. Thanks for the comment.
thanks mate
Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for your straightforward video.
Thanks for the comment
Great vid, I like the heat sink idea. Take my 2 Thumbs up way up!
Thank you for the comment.
Can you please check and let users know if having the heatsink makes any difference. Especially when downloading games on steam and copying games from an external SSD.
I've bought this exact drive and the (suckoo) adapter is on the way. If the temps are high and do throttle speed, this will guide people like me to whether or not a heatsink is needed.
Thanks for the comment. I saw a 14 degree drop in tempature.
Congrats. I hope it works as well as it did for me. It is important to remember that ssds only have a few temp sensors so you might be getting a false sense without a heatsink. The heatsink will absorb and spread, so the ssd will be more uniform in temp. Another thing I didn't mention in my video is the life of a drive can be drastically shortened by overheating. It will work either way but heatsinks ensure a better sense of tempature and extend the life of the drive. In regards to downloading games on steam if you have unlimited internet, normally the cpu uncompressing will be the biggest bottleneck. Least in my experience.
Do you think a heatsink with 3mm thickness would work? In my country we cant use amazon. Thank you❤
Yes for sure. You just need low profile. So much better then running without heatsink. Thanks for the comment
@@StuballzTech awsome. Keep up the good work😊
👍
Thanks for the thumbs up.
Ssd with heatsink?then cutting back plate?if i dont use heatsink, do i need to cut back plate?
If your not using a heatsink you don't need to cut the backplate. Thanks for the comment.
4:22 In gaming laptops, temperatures oscillate around 80°C, most pastes do not like such temperatures and after 6-8 months there is a pump out effect or they simply dry out. Suggests to use of Honeywell PTM7950 phase change material. It comes in sheet form, works more efficiently than traditional pastes and does not have the above-mentioned problems.
Thanks for the comment. Ya I love ptm7950. It has recently gotten easier with LTT carrying it. I have had really good luck with kpx but my next change will be to ptm7950. Would you like to see a video on that?
@@StuballzTech I would like to see a comparison of PTM7950 with traditional pastes such as TG Kryonaut Extreme, NT-H2, MX-6 and KPx. There are not many tests of thermal putties. It would be nice if you could test them one day on some graphics card in a desktop computer with vrams that heat up a lot. A little bit of them is already on sale: Upsiren UTP-8, UX Pro, U6 Pro, Honeywell HT10000, CX-H1300, Penchem TH949-1, TH855-5, Laird T-Putty 607, Halnziye HY256, HY236, HY234, Zezzio ZT-PY6, Jeyi 8100, TG-A7000, T-Global TG6060, TG-PP10, TH930, LiPoly SH-putty3, OC-P10, K5 Pro.
Thanks for the feedback. I will look into that
can you compare the temps from 2230 to a 2280? Is it hotter or the same, tnx
I saw a drop of about 14 degrees.
I had a Zephyrus G14 with a 3060 that had liquid metal. It wouldn't recognize the GPU at all. Came from the factory with it too, and I just don't trust it in a mobile device.
I agree. The margins of what you gain isn't worth the risk.
Liquid Metal is seriously over rated. I also use kpx for paste but what’s really been doing great is the kryosheets. Those are worth the money for longevity also better core to core temps
Ya there is some awesome options. My other go to is ptm7950. That stuff is amazing. I have nothing bad to say about it besides sourcing it. If you haven't given that a try I highly suggest it. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the great vid. Keep up the good work. It might be worth daoing an update video down the road.
Thank you for the comment. I will see how it is preforming down the road. At this point it is still doing well. Do you have any suggestions for other future videos you would like to see?
The title should really say "lower cost" I call bs on low cost storage lol. These things are still really expensive compared to any other storage medium.
Thanks for the comment. I will change that
What was the bit size of the screwdriver for the m.2 screw?
I used a size Philip's 0
@@StuballzTech Thanks.
what if you bought it used? It won't let me link my Ally to my account for cloud recovery.
When are you seeing this? What does it say? Mine I didn't need it registered to account.
@@StuballzTech when I go to register mine to my myASUS account. I bought mine used at best buy and absolutely love it, but can't justify buying a bigger SSD for it like this.
So you make it through cloud recovery before issues? The advantage of best buy is you can take it back and get help if you have issues.
today, the cheap ssd is more expensive than the Crucial
Dang, I am sorry about that. Thanks for catching that. I will add in a few other alternatives.
What is your recommended handheld?
At this point the ROG ally is my go to but it depends so heavily on use case. Example: steam deck has the best battery.
What is your favorite Keyboard?
My currently daily driving the g915 tkl with tactile switches. I also occasionally use a custom keyboard with lubed panda switches.
Do you think that 2230 m.2 will come down in price anytime soon?
I do think they will come down in price because they are getting more usage. But with the price of storage going up I don't think it will be anytime soon.
What heatsink did you use?
I linked it down in the affiliate links. This is the slimmer one I referenced in the video.
Great video. I appreciate that you don't want to waste my time.
Thank you for the comment
Thank you for making a simple video.
Glad I could help out
Thanks for this - that actually clarified what to do if I install a new drive and how to get the OS back on.
Thanks for the comment.
Did you send in the charger with the Ally? Or just the Ally alone?
In the instructions it says not to send it with. So just the ally by itself.
I sure hope i don't have this issue. I don't play any AAA games, so hopefully I'm good but we will see.
My best suggestion is replacing internal nvme so micro sd cards are not needed. Thanks for the comment.
Just leave the battery plugged in, I killed a rog Zephyrus from a short from unplugging.
Dang that sucks. Did you also have an esd bracelet as well? Thanks for the comment
That sounds dangerous.
I am assuming it does, but will this upgrade cause loss of the year long factory warranty?
So I had to use the warranty (covered in another video) I put the original drive back in and the warranty repair went great. I know it can differ depending on country but usa that is not the case.
I've actually decided to return my brand new ROG Ally because of this video. I'm a huge emulation fan and I can't risk the constant bricking of SD cards.
Smart call. The only thing I suggest is getting a larger main drive. Which is fairly easy to do.
I'd suggest the Lenovo Legion Go. I got one myself because of the card issues on the Ally.
I do agree the legion go is a good option. But I also feel there are trade offs. I feel like all handhelds have their trade off and it is upto the individual to decide what they are willing to deal with.
The Legion Go is fine hardware, but the battery isn't big enough to support it. That means you're either running at lower resolutions or TDP. And at that point, what IS the point? Also, it's ergonomics are not good for some users.
I clicked on this hoping it wasnt just faux titled expand you storage demo, i was wrong. 400% percent wrong
Thanks for the comment. Sorry to disappoint. Storage really is the weak point on these handhelds in my opinion.
I’m curious, did you buy your ROG Ally directly from Asus or did you get it at Best Buy? - I ask because I wonder if the new devices that they are selling have the updated motherboard in order to avoid the SD card issues.
I bought mine from a local best buy. What I have heard is that the solder was too thin and as it heats up it softens and looses connection. I have no way to verify that. I am currently using a micro sd card and they replaced my motherboard and it is working. Are you thinking to buy one?
@@StuballzTechI’m thinking about buying one but the only thing holding me back is this issue.
My best suggestion is replacing the internal nvme so you don't need sd cards

@@StuballzTech Thank you for the info. Yes, I am thinking of picking one up locally at Best Buy because they have the Z1 extreme ed., for $100 less than what Asus offers on their website. With that said, I wonder if by ordering from Asus directly, I would be sent a more updated ROG Ally motherboard/solder post SD card debacle. I was also thinking of just buying a new SSD like you did in your video, to just add more games so I do not need to use or buy an SD card. I am still deciding what would be the best route to go.
Ya getting it local is awesome because you can exchange it same day if you have issues. I am working on a new video where I use a 2280 drive. I got a 4tb 2280 and adapter for less then 2230 2tb.
Would I need to set up the ROG before doing this, to create the cloud recovery? Or can I do this install fresh out of the box?
You can do a fresh install out of the box because it is built into the bios. Great comment
You might wanna increase your mic volume for future videos.
Thank you for the comment. I just upped it. We will see how this next video turns out.
my dude has the biggest mic and still I can't hear a thing lol 😂
Thanks for the feedback. I will try and get that fixed
Hii. I have rog ally extreme . And forza 5 running great on it . But sometimes it just keep on stuttering and don’t run smooth . I mostly play on 15 watts. And after it starts stuttering, I even tried turbo mode and it still doesn’t help . It lags badly
Have you tried to change the Vram amount. I think by default it is 4GB of the 16gb. You should try change that.
Hey so if I have stuff already on my Rog Ally do I need to factory reset my Rog Ally before I do this or just turn it off and start the upgrade process???
You don't have too. Just keep in mind if you don't somebody could access the data on that drive if it leaves your possession. Thanks for the comment
@@StuballzTech Alright thanks
I went ahead and put in a 4tb 2280 with heat pads and a copper heatsink. I used the Crucial P3 Plus and the speeds based on crystal disk mark are 30% faster. I cloned the drive beforehand without dealing with the time it takes the BIOS to upgrade.
I am planning a video shortly for that. I have a 4tb 990 pro. Was your drive not throttle with that cooling?
@@StuballzTech It shouldn't. I have tested it a few times and it gets consistently better speeds than the factory 2230 and I've not seen any throttling. I chose this drive specifically because it doesn't have DRAM which produces a lot more heat. If I'm not mistaken the 990 has DRAM and that's one of the reasons I didn't use it. Every degree counts with such a small enclosure.
Ya I am amazed the stock 2230 doesn't have a heat sink. They are so dense it is only a matter of time till they cook. I have a normal nvme heatsink but I am going to have to modify my case to make it work.
Why do you sound depressed 😂
Thank for the comment. It must be an eq issue
Because 99.5 percent of viewers are not subscribed ;)
This must be pre-nose incident.
Yep, was in the editing stage.
