Miyazaki mightier led this, but we all know Tanimura directed these decisions. And like with ds2, it's abhorrent dogshit with mediocre mechanics that focus more on difficulty over an experience of a lifetime. It would've been nicer if we didn't have crappy stance breaks or instant hyper armor frames, but a stagger system like in ds3, where after a certain number of hits, or if that boss hits a certain hp threshold, they would stagger no matter what. Take Gael for example, he staggers in 3 hits from the harald curved sword, doesn't matter if you hit him once, and only hit him again 20 minutes later, the third hit will always guarentee a stagger, and as such, you're better able to make your own opening by keeping a mental count of this. All that happened with Elden Ring is that they retardedly chose to implement Sekiro's posture mechanic in a souls-like game, give no indication of its existance or recovery rate, and called it a day without the deathblows. This is incredibly poorly designed, and often times incredibly pointless on mist bosses, and I'm willing to point this out as an objective statement that adds to the ever growing pile of Elden Ring's flawed design philosophies.

Yeah It's definitely not random. Everything about her is learnable. But I think it's fair to criticize a design where the boss's hyper armor starts before the animation. (Malenia is literally the only staggerable fromsoft boss that has this design) The moment her AI decides to throw certain moves at you, her hyper amor is already activated, again before any visual cue. This of course incentivizes players to be passive and wait for her to make a move when she just stands there, which she does a lot, and only go for a few guaranteed openings.

yea, staying far away is kinda a requirement as well, 'cause she dodges your projectiles. So staying far away is needed for the strat to work since the bubbles are homing and they travel slowly it makes it so that her dodges become meaningless since it's an input read. I think if you're patient enough you could definitely make it work in phase 2 as well, it's just that the windows for attacking are just really far and few in between.
@wolvenedvard3049 Жыл бұрын
No boss, for how difficult, should be able to bend the game’s mechanics like this. She can cancel her stun recovery into doge animations, or even into hyperarmour attacks. Even directly into waterfowl dance. While she has hyperarmour, she cannot lose her stability (the game teaches you that landing charged attacks can break bosses’ stability in the middle of an hyperarmoured animation but nope, Malenia’s built different). I mean, Elden Ring even has a later dodge input than DS3. Wtf. They need to fix this.
@ivanchaki372 Жыл бұрын
The game never taught you anything specific. The others had one type of behaviour and her behavious is different. Unless the developer outright mentions something is a mechanic, or it absolutely never changes (in the case of Elden Ring it does). If you had to mikiri an attack which isn't a thrust and doesn't have a perilous symbol it would be game breaking as the developers clearly mentioned it to work that way. Not in the case of Elden Ring If Malenia didn't have that hyperarmor she could be abused to death with a colossal weapon. And her parry makes wailing on her like a shit impossible like it was with Maria or Friede. Don't see that as something bad. And waterfowl is overblown way too much. Simply running away and jumping allows you to dodge it even from close range provided you didn't f around to find out the location of the previous grace. Fix what? Elden Ring bosses have longer gaps between individual attacks compared to DS3 so the dodge is mitigated by that. Don't know what about it needs fixing.
@leinad2934 Жыл бұрын
It's not exactly that she cancels stun recovery. The issue with her, as shown in this video, is her hyper armor starts before her attack/dodge animation. Kinda like input reading where the enemy is already dodging before your character even starts to move. The moment her AI decides to throw a move at you or dodge away from you, hyper amor is already activated. So there's no visual cue whatsoever as to weather it's safe to attack her or not except for a few guaranteed openings. This disincentives aggressive play especially if you're wielding a heavy weapon.

@@ivanchaki372 Malenia is quite literally the only ENEMY in the game that has the ability to completely ignore poise damage if she's in an attack animation. Yes, it broke the previously established rules. If they insist on making her human-like with her regular poise breaks, then they could've just... not done that. Make her fight like any other boss, but remove her ability to completely ignore stagger just because she decided to do another triple slash at you. They made the boss difficult for themselves to design in such a way it can't be easily cheesed, and instead of just changing their direction with that boss fight chose to just give her a bunch of very inconsistent hyper armor and abilities no other enemy - bosses included - in the game have.

In phase 2 it is basically the same, with more opportunities like the slam attack, right kick. You can just spam your attack without worrying that she will break free and attack right away. The only thing she could do to escape is to block your attack, jump back, or waterfowl. If you can do the close range dodge, the fight is actually pretty easy. She has the ability to cancel her animations, this includes stagger animation, which is why sometimes she will simple appear to "cheat" when attacked by something that staggered her previously. Not only that, but she can cancel an animation and turn it into basically any attack she has, including the Waterfowl Dance. You got very lucky here since she didn't do that both times she cancelled her stagger. I actually like this ability for her, it makes it impossible to get into a rhythm in the fight, meaning you can never just turn your brain off and go into an attack-dodge-attack-dodge pattern. It also prevents normal players (Myself included) from being aggressive and "disrespectful" of her, since she can turn any engagement around with one stagger cancel.
