"They are not only rich and famous, but also happy" 🧐 Billie: "I've suffered with a lot of depression my whole life." Finneas: ""I’ve always been filled with anxiety, sort of an existential dread."

They don’t even know how lucky they are and how rare it is that parents like that. I’m happy for them, but I am so sad for my inner child. How she was suffocated and abused and I’m still uncovering and recovering from it. What would I have been if I’d had love? Hugs? “I love you” the fact that her mom even acknowledges her mental health let alone protects it. My mom couldn’t care less how I feel. I remember begging her to hug me as a kid and she just scoffed and laughed and said “why? you don’t exactly make it easy to love you”

Everyone here is saying that her parents were essential in catapulting her to success, and that may be true given she became famous so young and had disabilities she had to overcome. I also had a lot of anxiety growing up and I just had to overcome it somehow. There’s also a special kind of artistic intensity that comes from having parents who don’t support your dreams, sell you out, and tear you down because they’re jealous of you. Charles Bukowski wrote about his parents like that. He was a full-time mailman most of his life before he made it as a writer later in his life. There are different paths to artistic success. Having supportive and dedicated parents is one of them. I think of Kendrick Lamar and Eminem, who grew up in the ghetto with troubled or absent parents. Chuck Palanuinuok who wrote “Fight Club” was a car mechanic when he wrote it, before he was able to write full time. He also wrote a wild novel called “Haunted” about a bunch of writers invited to be trapped in a mansion together for a month. Whoever wrote the best story by the end of the month, wins a million dollars. Well, all the writers start destroying the food supply and breaking the lightbulbs and stuff to “suffer” more for their art. And then, when that’s not enough, they start mutilating themselves. 😅 Very very dark satire. Britney Spears had bad parents, and also Jennette McCurdy from iCarly and Sam and Cat who just wrote “I’m Glad My Mom is Dead”. But then consider that no one would ever buy that book if her mother wasn’t obsessed with making her famous as a child, even though she was an abusive mother. Speaking of child stars, consider Shia LaBeouf who deeply struggled with his troubled father, but was more forgiving in his depiction of him in the movie he wrote and directed about their relationship, “Honey Boy”. Grimes grew up in a rich family and never had to struggle that way, yet she is still a self-taught musician who is extremely hard working and brilliant. You can take another person from a rich family and they end up spoiled brats. It really depends upon the person destined to be a true artist, I think. They’ll do it irregardless of the circumstances they’re born into, somehow, someway, however long it takes.

The thing is, we need to expand the definition of “artist” to include mastering your craft, whatever it is. It could be anything. Everyone has something they excel at that energizes them and motivates them. You don’t have to be famous to be an artist. If schools taught that more, if society emphasized that more, we’d have a lot more people in the world who are satisfied by their work instead of hating the work week. That’s real work. It could be as simple as raising children and making a loving home, which really isn’t simple at all. It’s as challenging a craft to master as any, and maybe the most difficult one, considering how many people have scars from their upbringing. Raising a family well requires tremendous self-knowledge and discipline. It’s different for everyone, and everyone has different levels of ambition and skill sets that they could master.

Honestly, I’d have been happy if my parents even talked to me and described what they knew, as artists, teacher, and parents of older siblings, about the artistic resources available to me around the city. I had no idea. The one thing they offered came with no explanation of what it was, or why they suggested it, so I said no, having no idea what I was declining.

I think Phinneas and Billie are a lot like the Carpenters. Their musical styles are obviously really different but Phinneas is a really good song writer and naturally Billie is a talented singer. Obviously both pairs are siblings. I like most of the Carpenters music and some of the Eilish’s although the latter’s genre isn’t my usual “thing.” There are real similarities though.
