Micro Machines Podcast

Micro Machines is a group of like minded individuals coming together to discuss our favorite subjects, real life armor pieces and modelling and somehow mashing them together into a podcast of history/comedy that can only be described as a "hot mess of stupid jokes, silly memes, a little bit of learning and a whole lot of fun".

An Arma Hobby version would be a dream, I hope they do eventually move on to larger machines like this - in the meantime I've been coin flipping between the new boxing of the B-25C/D from Airfix and the Hasegawa B-25J.

The Chieftain mentioned on his inside the hatch video on the panther that despite mud and the like getting between the road wheels might cause issues, he said he found it hard to believe that frozen mud would stop the wheels from turning when the tank starts in a low gear, the high torque that comes with using a low gear.

thanks for doing these epic guides. It really is super useful, especially when you get to the kits section. Since Arma and Eduard have been busy releasing lots of new Hurricane kits, maybe a good time to do an episode on the Hurricane? So many variants and so many new kits on the market... actually same goes for the Rufe.

The podcast was certainly fun to watch but I have to ask if most of the mentioned designs are real. Despite Panzerjagerwagen E90 jagdtiger and krokodil, Panzerjagerwagen E50 and some other tanks not making any sense from the engineering perspective, the blueprints of those vehicles also look entirely made up (you can tell it by certain parts of vehicles being drawn with thicker and darker lines). I'm not exactly saying that they are fake but I would like to get a source (if there is one) as I've never heard of any E-series tanks except the most famous ones. I would also recommend checking out ConeOfArc and Tank Encyclopedia (I don't remember how the site is called for sure) as I get information from there regarding WWII vehicles.

great work also could you guys make an Episode on the T-10 ? it's in my eyes one of the most interesting post war heavy tanks example being the only one with a loading assistance device and in 1957 with the t-10M entering survive with delta-D delta-D is a system used by a lot of soviet MBT's and it automatically and dynamically measures the speed of the tank using a tachometer to calculate the distance traveled and automatically subtracted this from the range to the target in the ballistic solution. The Delta-D system in the T2S-29-14 also took the orientation of the turret in azimuth as an input and dynamically generated new calculations using a cosine function. For example, if the T-10M was moving diagonally obliquely relative to the gunner's target at a 60° angle, the system would subtract the distance at a rate equivalent to the Cosine of 60 degrees, or 0.5. As such, if the tank was moving at a steady speed of 18 km/h (5 m/s), then the system would subtract the distance at a rate of 2.5 m/s. The system would continue to run until it is reset by the gunner, so the gunner could make a single range measurement and fire continuously at the target while the driver performs maneuvers with the tank without needing to update his range measurement. The distance traveled by the tank was calculated by measuring the engine driveshaft speed; it was an odometer, to put it simply, but this system was independent from the driving odometer of the tank. and other interesting features have a good day :)

You guys forgot the post-war Churchill FV3903; Basically a MK VII with the L9 165mm gun, lobbing HESH ammo, also used later on the Centurion AVRE. Anyway, the Churchill tanks are victim of so many misconceptions. "Fun fact"; the Royal Tank Regiment was given very little say in the A22 design process. Already at that time, they were actually aware of the infantry tank doctrine becoming obsolete, but their reservations were pushed aside by a toxic and stubborn old-boys network within the War Office and their nepotistic supporters who insisted on yet another infantry tank. So the RTR was given the option of very little say in the project or nothing at all. With that said; the Churchill and the German Panzer IV actually share a very similar starting point; that of being infantry support tanks; Both are of equal width - important in regards to turret ring diameter - and both started out with howitzer guns to deal with enemy infantry and "softskin" targets. Both feature engineering standards originating from the 1930s and both feature similarly powered engines; 300 HP for the Panzer IV, 350 HP for the Churchill. However, the crucial difference that holds back the Churchill is its hull revolving tracks. That is the single most detrimental aspect that kept the Churchill from having a bigger turret ring and as a result, it limited gun options severely. In fact, I'd say the Churchill is a British 'Panzer IV' overloaded with armor. It's not a true Heavy Tank, as many of those stupid tank videogames try to make people believe. Then there's also the big misconception about the engine. Sure, it wasn't as powerful as they wanted it to be but as you pointed out in your video, at the time they were already very aware of the fact that the Churchill needed something stronger than the Meadows engine, especially with the Blitzkrieg tactics becoming more and more apparent. Unfortunately, engine development was sort of handicapped due to them not being given access to precious aluminum - priority for that was given to the RAF developments - and the engine bay compartment was limited in space as well; hence the Bedford TwinSix. 350 HP on a 40ton tank might sound insufficient - however, the secret sauce here is the drivetrain and gearbox; These helped the engine to output high levels of torque all the way from low revs to high revs, nearly matching the peak torque of the famous Sherman Ford V8 GAA engine. You should look up this particular youtube video which shows Shermans vs Churchills on mobility trials in the jungle. Despite the fact the radial engine of the Sherman having more horsepower output, the Churchill manages to beat it in terms of climbing steep slopes and felling thick trees. This is because the Churchill's engine having incredible torque band while the radial angine in the Sherman had crap low end torque. To conclude; Even though I love the Churchill tank, I suppose it should have been left on the drawing board - instead they probably would've been off better by simply making the Matilda 2 design wider, allowing for a bigger turret ring and gun - because the Matilda 2 design was already so successfully tried and tested.
