At Brooklyn Tweed we are passionate about wool, knitting and design.
We develop and manufacture breed-specific wool yarns that support domestic textile production. This means designing, sourcing, dyeing and spinning our yarns 100% within the USA.
Rich in history, the American textile industry needs our support to grow. Producing our yarns domestically entails forging relationships, building supply chains, nurturing demand for domestic materials and crafting new business models that can thrive.
We craft our knitwear designs with the same commitment to timeless quality that we apply to our yarns. Every pattern is meticulously drafted and edited to provide clear instructions that empower knitters to build new skills. Our design team explores the intersection of knitting traditions and contemporary style, to produce patterns that are a pleasure to knit and wear.

Thank you, well explained.
Glad it was helpful! Happy knitting!
thank you so much its a simple but really good tip!!
You're so welcome! Happy knitting!
I wish more KZread knitters valued delivery as much as content. Being an experienced knitter does not automatically make one a good teacher! I literally watched three videos that (poorly) explained what you all did so succinctly here. Thank you!
Glad you found this tutorial helpful! Happy knitting!
Hi - how can I get the written instructions, not transcripts?
Hello! The written instructions are in the video description and also on our tutorial page on our website: brooklyntweed.com/pages/how-to-knit-rib-cabled-cast-on-video-tutorial Happy knitting!

When you were demonstrating the grafting of the garter ridge, you said to do the "knit off, purl on" on the front and back needles both; however, when you went to repeat it you "said" the same thing, but when you did the first needle you did do the 'knit off and purl on" but on the second needle you did the "purl off and knit on" instead of doing the "knit off and purl on" again as you were indicating. In other words, you were doing the second needle like you would if you were grafting in stockinette. I'm assuming that this was an error?
You are absolutely correct, good catch! That should be a knit off, purl on, on the second needle at 8:28 .
For those like me who forget where they left off: Following on @deniselim9607's comment below: To pick up at the right place in sequence (when combining steps 1&2, then steps 3&4): if your yarn was left in back of work, then you are ready to do a knit off next (steps 1&2); if your yarn was left in front, then you are ready to do a purl off next (steps 3&4). Also, best way I've found to go back and snug up bound off stitches (if necessary): gently tug on the top loop of the top knot at the top edge of each knit/purl row. You may have to test a few strands before you find the right one, but once you do it great simplifies the snugging up process.
Excellent tips!
Gorgeous pattern :)
Thank you! 😊
The definitive grafting tutorial -- thank you!!
Thanks so much for watching! Happy knitting!
Oh my word, I want to be there. I honestly wish to just dive into a great vat of the yarn. Ugh. I have envy issues. 😮❤😮
It looks so squishy! (Probably nicer once it's all washed & skeined though.) Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you! I am a new knitter and just finished the Close to You shawl. It took me forever and the bind off instructions were CO 2 sts, BO 5 sts. So lucky I found your clear tutorial. The picot bind off looks great! I appreciate you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Excellent, very clear instructions.
Glad it was helpful! Happy knitting!
My mind is blown. This is so helpful, thank you!!
You're so welcome! Happy knitting!
I have just been thinking about doing this when your video popped up. When I knit in the round I usually use two pairs of circular needles so I can see how easy it would be to do the helix stripes. It will be great for socks, especially as I have lots of leftover bits of sock yarn. Thank you for your video.
That's a great idea! Thanks for watching!
😊Thank you!
You're so welcome! Happy knitting!
Thank you for clear instructions!!
You're so welcome! Happy knitting!
Thank you! I was initially just taught just float your old color over your new color (for every switch of color?) but I felt something was off. I will try this way!
You're so welcome! Happy knitting!
Wow this video is perfect timing as I was just thinking about how to embroider a flag on my new hat I’m working on!
Perfect! Happy stitching!
Thankyou...but it still terrifies me!
We're here if you need help!
Hi. What about binding in helical striping?
Great question! For a smooth bind off, we recommend ending your stripes and transitioning back to a single color before binding off -simply stop working the “stripe” color and overtake the join point with your main color, then continue knitting as usual.
Great job in explaining. Thanks
Thanks for watching! Happy knitting!
This is very good explanation. Esp when u showed it woth fingers as example was finally my eureka moment
We're so glad you found it helpful! Happy knitting!
I beed patern for biys 3 to 10 years in chunky wool please
Hello! Our Biggie Rib Hat and Frasier hat are two great options for children's chunky weight knits: brooklyntweed.com/collections/chunky-hats
What about the wrong side?
Great question! Often for stranded colorwork you'll be working in the round - we found this tutorial helpful for working stranded colorwork flat: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iGeqlsiIf8euYM4.html
WOW awesome video thanks
Thanks for watching! Happy knitting!
If you’re using this decrease when working flat, do you follow this dec pattern on the wrong side too? Or just knit and purl as they are for the wrong side?
Hello! You'd generally be working decreases on just one side of your work, with some rows in your ribbing pattern in between, so for example if you worked your decreases on a right side row, you'd knit your knits and purl your purls on the following wrong side row. Happy knitting!
Is it possible to use interchangeable needles to weave in a lifeline if I am using Magic Loop? I tried it but something went horribly wrong!
Hello! Are you trying to carry along the lifeline with your needles as you knit (proactive lifeline)? You should be able to do this with magic loop, making sure that your lifeline is staying with your needle cable as it passes through all the stitches in your round (might have to do a little detangling at your loop areas). Let us know how it goes!
Great explanation.
Thanks so much! Happy knitting!

Many thanks for the most clear and straightforward explanation of this bind off method I have seen so far - it has worked first try and I'm over the moon - new sub here 😊
Thanks so much! Happy knitting!
Spending a quiet 2024 Memorial Day weekend devoted to conquering stranded colorwork. I watched dozens of KZread videos that left me more confused and frustrated. Finally I found this perfect one from Brooklyn Tweed and am on my way knitting a hat in stranded colorwork. I am designing my own pattern as I go along - nothing requiring me to catch floats. I am a thrower, so I appreciate your segment here on working the pattern with both colors held in the right hand. Thank you for this highly professional tutorial.
Thanks so much for watching! Happy knitting!
So it's trapping your floats not catching them as I thought. Very, very clear instruction. Thank you. xxJane 🐑🌼
You're so welcome! Happy knitting!
I've been knitting well over forty years and I feel it is time for me to tackle colour work. It took me over thirty five to knit socks and now it's a rare occasion for me not to have a pair on the go. So your video was important knowledge for me to know and understand. I've heard of 'catching your strand'. I think this is when you have a long stretch of one colour so you catch the second colour to see the strand being too long?? Hopefully you have done a video on this. Thank you. xxJane 🐑🌼
Thanks so much for watching! We've got just the video you need, our Trapping Floats tutorial: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lG1-udBugs7Fpqg.html (Check out our entire How to Knit: Colorwork playlist for more tips & techniques! kzread.info/head/PL0_ZPDPi8ygiPcNlv11URStZTk7k44c5z )
More hashtags!
Right? Apparently we're supposed to put lots of hashtags on shorts!
When is this sale? I just looked on your website and didn't see any of these large cones for purchase
Our sale is going on now through Friday! We still have a few large Loft cones left! brooklyntweed.com/collections/warehouse-sale
Thanks for a clear and well paced tutorial. Your demonstration of how to hold the live stitches against the needle so they don’t “get away from you” was very clear and helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Happy knitting!
Can this be done for a 2x1 rib?
Hello! Did some digging and found a tutorial from 2009 where someone increased their 2x1 rib to a 2x2 rib before working the tubular bind off: shadowdancer.typepad.com/blog/2009/07/a-tutorial-stretchy-sock-cuffs.html
Too funny! You have made my day :) Hope it’s a successful sale event - usually is! ❤
Thanks so much!
Fabulous lesson!! Thanks😊 ❤❤❤
You're so welcome! Happy knitting!
Ugg i have to wait…uggg ok.
🤣🤣👍👍❤️❤️🧶🧶
Put my name on a cone!
You got it!
@@BrooklynTweed_Official Wow, things sell out fast. I was able to get a large cone of Loft and a few other items. Cones are best for weaving. Thanks!
I have struggled with wrap and turn and could never get it… finally I think I can successfully do a short row with this technique
Hello, how do you bring all the yarns back to end on the same round? I've been knitting the body of a sweater with 3 skeins of the "same" color. Now I need to split for the hem and want to use one skein for the short rows.
Hello! You can simply drop the stripes you don't want to continue with and work your end-of-round stitches in your main color: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lWuFtMehibjKXc4.html
The stitch definition is surprisingly good in the darker teal color. Is that because of some yarn characteristic?
It is! Arbor is made from Targhee wool from Montana & South Dakota - this finewool breed grows thick, plush fleeces with exceptionally elastic fiber, well suited for smooth worsted-style spinning. Combined with a round, springy 3-ply construction, the result is a yarn that's lively on the needles with fantastic stitch definition. :)
Finally .... a video I can follow. Success at last. Thank you.
You're so welcome! Happy knitting!
Of course, Mitch is adorable and now I may need to buy the pattern.
My goal is to become an advanced knitter. I love learning new methods and techniques and this is fabulous. Thank you very much.
You are so welcome! Happy knitting!
I’m always looking for inspiration for cute fall skirt shirt combos very hard to find. This outfit was everything! Love it
You are an excellent teacher, thank you so much!
