You can save yourself a bit of time by picking up contrast, speedpaint or xpress paints and giving them a go over your zenithal priming. This will ensure you keep some vibrant tones and not have to spend the extra time with layers of washes (believe me I tried to paint with washes for a few months) plus you can use medium to thin down the contrast paints if you don't want the colors to be as strong and take away from your Survivors and abominations. Then instead of using your costly Agrax Earthshade to individually wash each mini, use a can of Army Painter Quickshade strong tone, or dark tone for a really strong contrast of darks and lights and just dunk each zombie then set them out to cure for 24 hours. You can finally go back and add blood effects as you like, paint in eyes here or there, and finish out your bases (ie: put some astrogranite down to simulate sidewalks, and paint your base rings black for added contrast). You'll save time, and the Quickshade has a side benefit of adding a protective layer of coating to the minis that is quite thick. Spray the zombies down with some Testors Dullcoate, or Krylon Matte spray protectant to reduce or eliminate the shine from the minis and you'll have some really sweet looking, high contrast zombies that look great on board. ☺
@theplasticcanvas Жыл бұрын
Hey. So the reason I went with washes as opposed to speed paints etc is because the look that you get from washes specifically is grittier and less 'clean'. For zombies, or creatures from other horror games where I've used the same technique, that look that you get fits them perfectly.
@Emloch Жыл бұрын
The best way to paint minis of this scale are with Contrast paints or Speedpaints. You can knock out a model every 10 minutes and they look great. Or you can spend more time adding highlights to make them really pop. They've worked great for me
@theplasticcanvas Жыл бұрын
I don't have any Contrast Paints or Speedpaints. How do they go with such small details? Can you paint precisely enough with them to be able to cleanly pick each detail out? From the videos I've watched they look like they'd flow too easily off of one detail onto another.

Hey. Depends what quality of brush you're after. I've had them for WAY longer than what I should've, but they were good when I first got them and they didn't cost much. So I think they're a perfect early set of brushes to have, or to compliment a higher quality set. But if you want a high quality brush, I'd look elsewhere. I'm going to pick up a few Windsor and Newton or Raphael brushes, but I'm going to keep these to use for the jobs that are a bit rougher on the brush e.g. applying washes or to really quickly slap on a base coat. Hey. Thanks so much for the comment. Glad you found the video useful! It's a really good, simple effect isn't it? I originally got the idea when I saw someone melting a clear acrylic rod to create the strands, but I didn't the stuff to do that with. So this was a good alternative!
@theplasticcanvas this is a great method. I was going back and forth with the idea originally of doing glue strands, but always seemed a bit to 'gooey' for blood. This works brilliantly!
Hi. I really love your painting effects videos. Is there any chance that you can show us how to paint rotten/zombified/dead flesh. Thank you very much.
Hey. Glad you like them! I did a zombie video a couple of years ago that uses the minis from Zombicide 2nd Ed. Here's the link - kzread.info/dash/bejne/c56mqZSKnNGaiNI.html Hopefully that's helpful!
@@theplasticcanvas thanks. Will check this.
Hello, any chance for a Quatril miniature tutorial?
No sorry. I quickly painted him a while back off camera because my wife decided to swap to that character. So there wasn't time to do a video for it.
you missed the ghosts.
Ghosts?
Hey. So the reason I went with washes as opposed to speed paints etc is because the look that you get from washes specifically is grittier and less 'clean'. For zombies, or creatures from other horror games where I've used the same technique, that look that you get fits them perfectly.
The best way to paint minis of this scale are with Contrast paints or Speedpaints. You can knock out a model every 10 minutes and they look great. Or you can spend more time adding highlights to make them really pop. They've worked great for me
I don't have any Contrast Paints or Speedpaints. How do they go with such small details? Can you paint precisely enough with them to be able to cleanly pick each detail out? From the videos I've watched they look like they'd flow too easily off of one detail onto another.
Can we get a break down of the paints and contrast paints used.
What IT is gane
The game is called Gatefall
Love your videos, these Bloodborne minis have all been terrific! This guy definitely steals the show. Very much looking forward to doing mine and copying some of your style.
Thanks so much for the comment. Glad you've enjoyed them! Yeah the size of the Cleric Beast makes him pretty impressive out on the table. Good luck with yours!
Awesome job as always sir, thanks for quality content
Thanks so much. Glad you liked it!
should've used contrast paints, there's really no need to mix shades this much.
Yeah but I don't have any and I'd rarely use them so I've never bothered getting them. Plus the washes give a 'grittier' look that I think suits Tainted Grail that you don't get from contrast paints.
very nice video, i'm using it for reference on this guys. I just wish you'd have added the list of colors used in the description.
Thanks! Glad you've found it useful. Yeah I've thought of doing that a few different times. Would you want the list broken into the different parts of the mini or just one list?
You could also add some fine sand for a "grainy" effect, then drybrushing with a lighter tan.
Yeah that's a good idea!
ohh wow slap chop
And I did that before I knew slap chop was a thing!
Hey just curious how do you like the army painter series brushes? I notice you use them a lot, are they worth it?
Hope that helps!
This was really helpful. I watched this and then made my first attempt, which I'm really happy with. Thank you!
Awesome. I'm glad you found the video useful!
IM not an expert but IT looks too flat for me, im looking for an inspiration for my bloodborne mini and sory but im still looking. I Think You have lost too much shades in torch reflecting areas
Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully you can find a video out there that'll inspire you!
Your transitions are seriously on point. I’d like to see a video just on your transition technique. Show when your loading the brush, then whatever you do to unload the brush for your feathering and go over how you plan out your layers and where your transitions will be. Awesome job as always
Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked it! Yeah I could definitely do a video for that. Just need to find a mini in my collection that would be good for it. And I don't think you want to see it every time I unload the brush (cos I'm a brush licker!) but I'll definitely keep an eye out for a mini that'll have lots of transitions.
