  What a great discussion! I'm editing a book with a merman and needed an 'expert' to weigh in on whether a merperson's lower half would be like a marine mammal or fish. From the comments I see that it can be either. :) One question I saw below didn't get an answer, and it's the secondary reason I was thinking 'fluke' rather than 'caudal fin' for our merman (other than their torso's being human) and that is the horizontal direction of the fins and the way I picture them swimming, which is like a cetacean - up and down undulation as opposed to side to side. The spine curves more readily in that direction for mammals than for fish, I believe. So a caudal fin on a fish, would be vertical, and they'd swim with a side to side sweeping movement. So, the way a merperson swims/ horizontal direction of the tail fin would suggest marine mammal and therefore - fluke. However, then we have to consider the presence of scales. oi Fantasy creatures are challenging.

  I googled the difference between caudal fin and fluke and found your video. Thanks for clearing that up. I am writing a book in which the mermaids are half marine mammal, not fish. They do not breathe underwater. Do they then have a fluke or a caudal fin?
