Great and to the point. I have cycled most of my life and I'm now 72yrs old and do 25to 35 miles once or twice a week in quite hilly country at a reasonable speed on my 5 year old rim brake Trek Emonda ALR and I'm ok after it. I also go out on some of my cheap old steel bikes most days for around 7 or 8 miles at a casual pace just to keep everything moving as I have arthritis in both hips and find this helps. I suppose you have to do something as you get older and find what works for you and cycling is the best and cheapest way. Keep it up mate.

Whitney that I bought when I went to college. I just need one more, or maybe two. Yeah, modern bikes and all the latest gadgets, I don't want them. I have six bikes, they all do differrent things and most of them are 20/30 years old. They all run Shimano cause it goes on and on. I have some 25 year old XT front and rear mechs on two of my bikes, they are solid, work like a dream and all I have to do every few years, is put some new pulley wheels on. Carbon bars, wheels, stems etc, I will never put my life at risk with that stuff, Ive had expensive carbon fly rods just snap on me for no discernable reason, enough said. Keep it simple and maintainable, thats my philosophy, there isn't a thing on my Surly LHT, that I could not fix/replace in the field, any field, anywhere. Tubless tyres, electronic gears, bottom bracket gear boxes, the greater the complexity, the greater are the consequences of failure. I dont want any of it.

I have a Carrera Subway 8 Hybrid Bike it must be 30+ years old? Living on Teesside expensive bicycles are stolen within days. This old bike is my legs and a makeshift walking stick as I have cerebral palsy. I can only hobble about twenty yards unaided. Bicycles are an invention beyond words. Some days on this bicycle are sublime, a slightly frosty Autumn day when the sun is rising or setting on the horizon,you can see your breath and the road ahead has a light frosting and thoughts turn to home and a mug of tea by the fire.

Yes, I tend to agree with freedom. The history of cycling is the innovation of rider + bike and finding a way, self-reliance. The bicycle is like a calculator to extend/multiply those leg efforts. Rider is pilot and pistons combined to bring the bicycle to it's full potential. Congrats on your 500+ mile challenge. Great story!

Thanks for the great topic. I'm a former road cyclist now on trails. I'd suggest picking your route into wind or steeper hills 1st half. Then focus on a negative split on your return. Use the wind or gravity to get home. Also, I've found longer recovery from high intensity even short bursts. Try to hold 7/8-tens max effort & pay attention to your breathing. Spin those legs freely going downhill helps with recovery. Be aware of your posture & relax shoulders to ease tension, cheers 🙂

exactly know what you're talking about. i'm 95-100kg and limited my riding to 60kms max when road riding, but usually just go by time - around 1,5h is enough, after that it's getting boring really fast. mountain biking is quite different - you work in intervals, technical sections and downhills are easier on the body (energy wise). i can do a 4-5 hours trip, up to 900-1000m vertical and although i'm spent, it's not the same as with road biking. and it's no so boring, which is a major factor for me.

With your unique academic background in both Arts & Humanities and also Science subjects, you could consider working supporting university students with study skills/mentoring on a 1:1 basis. Often unis recruit directly but some outsource this kind of work to agencies. You can pick up flexible work doing this to supplement your income and choose your hours. You could do this pretty much full time (though there's often a lack of work during the summer, but then you can often pick up work with exam invigilating) or part-time while experimenting with other roles. You won't make a fortune but might find it rewarding to use your skills in this way

The biggest problem with having multiple bikes is that all of the fucking problems you have are multiplied by the number of bikes. I like SRAM shifting, but the brakes go bad because they use Dot 3 in them. Shimano last forever because they use what is basically baby oil. I try to keep my total number of bikes below 4, although I currently have 5, but one is stored at my parents place so I don't have to take a bike when we visit them, so I don't really count that one! I've got Stumpjumper Evo, super reliable, awesome go to MTB, Base model Tarmac, again very reliable and it was cheap too (second hand). All my bikes are second hand, every single one. You save a lot of money buying used but as new bikes. The "lifetime" warranty from specialized is like trying to get blood out of a stone so it doesn't worry me buying 2nd hand.

Agree 100% with all you say. Stumpy is a great MTB. See my other video on SRAM Force CX1 for my thoughts on SRAM brakes. Why don’t they use mineral oil like Shimano? Storing multiple bikes is a big problem. I’ve got 3 in my kitchen, 3 in my lounge, one in my vestibule and a frame on the wall.

In 2008, I bought a brand new Stumpy to do a local mtb marathon race. My cousin was on a 6 month old (borrowed) Santa Cruz hardtail. We arrived at the first feeding station and snorted haughtily at the guy with the steel-rimmed, rusty 10 year old budget bike. Then we realised he'd been at the feeding station for at least 5 mins before us. That was humbling and just shows that it's the rider, not the bike.

I have standardised on XT rear derailleurs, and GRX front derailleurs, pretty much bullet proof. I use Microshift Brifters (they have mechanical brakes), I just hate hydraulic brakes, for me far too much stopping power. I used to have more bikes, but now only have 2 bikes, one Road/gravel, and a MTB. Years ago I tried SRAM, had pretty much the same experience as you.

Can I just say as someone that has about 12-14 bikes (depending on how you count them, projects etc ) I think you are completely missing the point , you're spending all this money on overpriced gimmicky crap, half of it out of China only to have a load of repair bills and disappointment , you have to see past the marketing otherwise you're just having the wool pulled over your eyes and at the mercy of the grim reaper who will always tell you you cant be happy unless you have in your words 'the latest and greatest', its about enjoying the day, being with friends , exploring new places, I met a bloke the other day in the pub , he'd bought a £250 bike from decathlon and cycled from UK to Greece on it, I worked with a Welshman that had cycled all round Wales during lockdown on some crappy old Raleigh , I was totally humbled. I mostly have old steel racers so that is different ball park to mtb but equally I swapped a second hand racer that owed me about £130 ( would have cost new at least a grand) for a Univega 24 speed full suspension mountain bike , ok a few years down the line the forks snapped in half when my son was riding it but we replaced them with something better and I/ we will continue to use that bike for years to come with no more than brake pads, a chain and few other bits to keep it on the road. I could go on and on but will leave you with the cost of my '86 Geoffrey Butler Reynolds bike , Campagnolo super record over 40 years , 50 p a week and its been over the highest passes in Europe , get back to basics , you don't need an expensive bike to get all of the benefits of cycling, fresh air ,fitness, adventure, friendship etc. Good luck and plan some good adventures mate on something simple. What about a video on each of your bikes, invite comments etc from your viewers..

I've got several old steel bikes including a 1960's Cinelli corsa B that could be used in the retro scene but I call it a dark art finding stuff without costing the earth. Do you know of Hilary Stone vintage bike dealer, look him up, might be useful, lots of others out there too.
Would definitely wear one. Came off my bike, 4-5 years ago , on a path beside a busy road, and my head cracked against a barrier. Not going that fast, just lost control of the bike on wet algae stuff. My hand will never fully recover, got some nerve damage, but the helmet certainly done it's job.

Sadly, the one true defence I've found is having a bike nobody wants. My 1994 mountain bike survived 4.5 years of frequent use with just a £10 lock. The other side: young guys found it so worthless while chained-up they kicked it over in disgust. London is full of old steel-framed bikes - seems others have the same idea.

Great and to the point. I have cycled most of my life and I'm now 72yrs old and do 25to 35 miles once or twice a week in quite hilly country at a reasonable speed on my 5 year old rim brake Trek Emonda ALR and I'm ok after it. I also go out on some of my cheap old steel bikes most days for around 7 or 8 miles at a casual pace just to keep everything moving as I have arthritis in both hips and find this helps. I suppose you have to do something as you get older and find what works for you and cycling is the best and cheapest way. Keep it up mate.

Yeah, modern bikes and all the latest gadgets, I don't want them. I have six bikes, they all do differrent things and most of them are 20/30 years old. They all run Shimano cause it goes on and on. I have some 25 year old XT front and rear mechs on two of my bikes, they are solid, work like a dream and all I have to do every few years, is put some new pulley wheels on. Carbon bars, wheels, stems etc, I will never put my life at risk with that stuff, Ive had expensive carbon fly rods just snap on me for no discernable reason, enough said. I have a Carrera Subway 8 Hybrid Bike it must be 30+ years old? Living on Teesside expensive bicycles are stolen within days. This old bike is my legs and a makeshift walking stick as I have cerebral palsy. I can only hobble about twenty yards unaided. Bicycles are an invention beyond words. Some days on this bicycle are sublime, a slightly frosty Autumn day when the sun is rising or setting on the horizon,you can see your breath and the road ahead has a light frosting and thoughts turn to home and a mug of tea by the fire.

Yes, I tend to agree with freedom. The history of cycling is the innovation of rider + bike and finding a way, self-reliance. The bicycle is like a calculator to extend/multiply those leg efforts. Thanks for the great topic. I'm a former road cyclist now on trails. I'd suggest picking your route into wind or steeper hills 1st half. Then focus on a negative split on your return. Use the wind or gravity to get home. Also, I've found longer recovery from high intensity even short bursts. Try to hold 7/8-tens max effort & pay attention to your breathing. Spin those legs freely going downhill helps with recovery. Be aware of your posture & relax shoulders to ease tension, cheers 🙂

exactly know what you're talking about. i'm 95-100kg and limited my riding to 60kms max when road riding, but usually just go by time - around 1,5h is enough, after that it's getting boring really fast. mountain biking is quite different - you work in intervals, technical sections and downhills are easier on the body (energy wise). i can do a 4-5 hours trip, up to 900-1000m vertical and although i'm spent, it's not the same as with road biking. and it's no so boring, which is a major factor for me.

With your unique academic background in both Arts & Humanities and also Science subjects, you could consider working supporting university students with study skills/mentoring on a 1:1 basis. Often unis recruit directly but some outsource this kind of work to agencies. You can pick up flexible work doing this to supplement your income and choose your hours. You could do this pretty much full time (though there's often a lack of work during the summer, but then you can often pick up work with exam invigilating) or part-time while experimenting with other roles. You won't make a fortune but might find it rewarding to use your skills in this way

The biggest problem with having multiple bikes is that all of the fucking problems you have are multiplied by the number of bikes. I like SRAM shifting, but the brakes go bad because they use Dot 3 in them. Shimano last forever because they use what is basically baby oil. I try to keep my total number of bikes below 4, although I currently have 5, but one is stored at my parents place so I don't have to take a bike when we visit them, so I don't really count that one! I've got Stumpjumper Evo, super reliable, awesome go to MTB, Base model Tarmac, again very reliable and it was cheap too (second hand). All my bikes are second hand, every single one. You save a lot of money buying used but as new bikes. The "lifetime" warranty from specialized is like trying to get blood out of a stone so it doesn't worry me buying 2nd hand.
Agree 100% with all you say. Stumpy is a great MTB. See my other video on SRAM Force CX1 for my thoughts on SRAM brakes. Why don’t they use mineral oil like Shimano? Storing multiple bikes is a big problem. I’ve got 3 in my kitchen, 3 in my lounge, one in my vestibule and a frame on the wall.

In 2008, I bought a brand new Stumpy to do a local mtb marathon race. My cousin was on a 6 month old (borrowed) Santa Cruz hardtail. We arrived at the first feeding station and snorted haughtily at the guy with the steel-rimmed, rusty 10 year old budget bike. Then we realised he'd been at the feeding station for at least 5 mins before us. That was humbling and just shows that it's the rider, not the bike.

I have standardised on XT rear derailleurs, and GRX front derailleurs, pretty much bullet proof. I use Microshift Brifters (they have mechanical brakes), I just hate hydraulic brakes, for me far too much stopping power. I used to have more bikes, but now only have 2 bikes, one Road/gravel, and a MTB. Years ago I tried SRAM, had pretty much the same experience as you.
A very sensible approach! Hydraulic brakes have nice modulation, but the downside hugely outweighs the benefits. Great for mountain bikes. Unnecessary for road bikes 🚴 😎 🚴

Can I just say as someone that has about 12-14 bikes (depending on how you count them, projects etc ) I think you are completely missing the point , you're spending all this money on overpriced gimmicky crap, half of it out of China only to have a load of repair bills and disappointment , you have to see past the marketing otherwise you're just having the wool pulled over your eyes and at the mercy of the grim reaper who will always tell you you cant be happy unless you have in your words 'the latest and greatest', its about enjoying the day, being with friends , exploring new places, I met a bloke the other day in the pub , he'd bought a £250 bike from decathlon and cycled from UK to Greece on it, I worked with a Welshman that had cycled all round Wales during lockdown on some crappy old Raleigh , I was totally humbled. I mostly have old steel racers so that is different ball park to mtb but equally I swapped a second hand racer that owed me about £130 ( would have cost new at least a grand) for a Univega 24 speed full suspension mountain bike , ok a few years down the line the forks snapped in half when my son was riding it but we replaced them with something better and I/ we will continue to use that bike for years to come with no more than brake pads, a chain and few other bits to keep it on the road. I could go on and on but will leave you with the cost of my '86 Geoffrey Butler Reynolds bike , Campagnolo super record over 40 years , 50 p a week and its been over the highest passes in Europe , get back to basics , you don't need an expensive bike to get all of the benefits of cycling, fresh air ,fitness, adventure, friendship etc. Good luck and plan some good adventures mate on something simple. What about a video on each of your bikes, invite comments etc from your viewers..

I've got several old steel bikes including a 1960's Cinelli corsa B that could be used in the retro scene but I call it a dark art finding stuff without costing the earth. Would definitely wear one. Came off my bike, 4-5 years ago , on a path beside a busy road, and my head cracked against a barrier. Not going that fast, just lost control of the bike on wet algae stuff. My hand will never fully recover, got some nerve damage, but the helmet certainly done it's job.

I am guilty of multi bicycles buyer, trying to compensate for the extreme lack of means to get racing bicycles back in the 1970's, always wanted the Raleigh Pro bicycle, with the coveted Reynolds steel tubing, a beauty to behold, masterpiece of British engineering ingenuity.
I had a Dawes racing bike with a Reynolds 531 frame. It cost me my entire first year’s student grant in 1979. Second day I owned It rode it to university and padlocked it to down pipe outside the main building. Came outside at lunchtime and it was gone. I’d love to meet the thief. It would be his last day on Earth 😏

Sadly, the one true defence I've found is having a bike nobody wants. My 1994 mountain bike survived 4.5 years of frequent use with just a £10 lock. The other side: young guys found it so worthless while chained-up they kicked it over in disgust. London is full of old steel-framed bikes - seems others have the same idea.
