Thete are a few universities whose organ professors consider this very piece to be right up there with the Hindemith sonatas, the large-scale works of Distler, Litanies etc. of Jehan Alain, Langlais, Walcha and others. (Of course this kind of lean, neoclassical idiom can hardly be compared to Duruflé, Dupré, Messiaen, Tournemire or Fleury.) The point is Micheelsen is virtually unknown to organists. At best one hears from time to time the Tokatta on "Lobe den Herren" from the small collection of miscellaneous chorale preludes he published early on. The fugue here is magnifcent, powerful in the best North German tradition. The recording on this instrument is a noble pioneering effort. What a joy to hear a recorded performance of a work I had played, and once had heard played during a Christmae recital. Nice to thino there's more to follow--especially from the composer's quite incognito native region: Dithmarschen with a captivaoting aesthetic coming out of its longtime inependently willed politics within Germany. To me, this aesthetic is delightful even exciting for a certain cool-reserved-edgy vibe in the mentality, food, weather, landscape, public performances. Dithmarschen, at the northwest somewhat passed-by corner of what's considered to be "Northern Germany!" We were taught the fugue with an overall early-music, semi-detached touch that allowed for an overall "cantabile" feel. And from there to coherent, demarcated lnes--which then throw into relief the various figures, and set off the end of cadences. Two inspiratons (but not imitatively) to make the most out of the fugue would be Buxtehude the way historically informed practice has settled in over the last five years or so. Also Duruflé in the A-l-a-i-n fugue, with the revised tempo he called for later in his career. ...that somewhat more relaxed, reverential motion at first that provides "somewhere to go" in order to cut through the inbuilt tension both leading up to and during the final glory in the name of a martyr to the cause of France (WW2) and, similarly, for the three angels of Grünenwald's famous Issenheimer triptyque to pierce thru everything. And prevail with their "sweet song." Looks like Herr Prof Micheelsen has belatedly been given a break into a deserved place within the 20th century canon. When we haf long thought it to be closed. === Gives me a degree of expectation for a surprising discovery that was always already there, year after year in the Bärenreiter catalogue. Waiting for the brisk, grey-toned, "herbes" (as Micheelsen puts it) weather/feel of Dithmarschen to blow Spirit into a music that was conceived with a passion on fire, but that calls no attention to itself. All the better to be suddenly cheered into believing there ARE new things under the sun. Things less to be invented, than 'happened-upon'...a little out of the blue. May it be!!

Deze organist is zeer begaafd. Snapt hoe muziek op vocale wijze moet worden aangepakt. Alles ademt lucht en rust en is gebalanceerd. erg mooi. Zijn improvisatorisch vermogen is van erg hoog niveau. En zijn techniek is virtuoos. Maar vooral is alles wat hij aanpakt enorm muzikaal ! Hij beheerst de cantus firmus ook fantastisch. Mijn orgeldocent had ook die enorme beheerstheid in zijn spel. Dat is een gave, die je krijgt van de almachtige. Hij mag er gezegend mee zijn! Erg mooi ! Mooie seufzers !!

Mooi gedaan Gerben Mourik. Het orgel begint prachtig met dat tongwerk. Het mooie is ook dat je als improvisator de mooiste klanken kunt opzoeken, dat doe je ook voortreffelijk. Gelukkig is de improvisatie kunst levendig in ons land. Hulde. En prachtig opgenomen, dat zal Marien Stouten hebben gedaan. Een goede keus om hem als organist van dit prachtige orgel met prachtige kerk te kiezen destijds.

Ja, dieser Mann ist ein faszinierendes Phänomen, und das liegt nicht allein an der französischen Schule. Allein die harmonische "Verarbeitung" eines markanten Motivs aus dem zweiten Choralteil zur Einleitung und die weitere Form! Er schafft es mit Leichtigkeit, eine doch etwas derb-neobarocke Orgel wie diese hier symphonisch klingen zu lassen. Das kann ich mir viele Male ermüdungsfrei anhören.

Marvellous, captivating, impressive. A stunning feat of concentrated improvisation, sounding like a Buxtehude or Walther had written it all down. I guess improvisation doesn't get any better than this. And what a wonderful organ too.

The organ by Van Vulpen contributes to this piece in such speaking terms, I do have the same proportional thoughts on this fine matter of exemplary expression of life, as there is no lack of wit in the playing

Van Vulpen organs are great. I had the privilege of having lessons on the one in the Nicolaaskerk IJsselstein, and loved every minute of it.
