I'm Nostalgia Nerd... I have an addiction to Nostalgia & things often categorised as "nerdy". I talk about software, hardware, games, toys, programs, magazines and other things from the 70s, 80s and 90s, sometimes with a liberal amount of dry humour. The channel's main focus is computer related items from the 80s & 90s.

Bruh...... India still broadcasting their shows in 4:3 aspects ratio.
Where is your whimsy and joy?
12:27-16:40 "...ve. Take two sheets of paper. A4, A5, a book; they all fit side by side much better on a 16 by 10 display compared to 16 by 9. Same if you turn an A4 page to landscape. Ju..." Why not sqrt(2):1, then?
6:50 cries in cable management ;)
why 16:10 and not 8:5?
because 16:10 makes it obvious that it's taller than 16:9
Correction: At 12:18 it shows the smallest box and lowest resolution of WXGA as somehow being 1920x1080 when the bigger box it is inside of is actually 1920x1080. WXGA is supposed to be 1366x768. That would make sense with the size of the box in this clip. I'd also imagine the vertical size should be visibly smaller but in this shot the difference between 768 and 1080 is nearly comparable to 1080 and 1200 which can't be right (312 pixels vs. 120 pixels).
Because monitors got better and new technologies were invented. You don't need a 16 minute video to explain this.
and for those wondering, the 1.85:1 ratio, when multiplied to the lowest whole numbers possible while still maintaining the ratio, is 37:20.
could also be someone just broke into the house and left it as a prank?
i had one in the early 00s a 1.4 energy the body work on it was mint. and had the comfiest seats ever. but the electrics were awful.
Funny, I use the arrow keys in my standard MMO keybind setup, because they provide a set of 4 easy to access additional keys near my usual numpad for combat abilities setup.
Quick question… Was there ever a Michael Jackson game where you had to dance and save babies? Or was this just a fever dream?
What a fantastic and concise history lesson on this. 🤛🏻
Worth for a fiver?
It was my old toy. I want to buy from you
You can plug a 4090 to that port.
Now people film fucking vertically. If I had the power I would make all phones shoot horizontal by default
I don't remember anyone rushing to 16:9 computer monitors. I remember 16:10 just disappearing as an option, due to names on the front of them changing from things like 'Dell' and 'HP' to 'Saumsung', 'LG', and other television manufacturers.
Great video. I only need to mention that not all movies about the future showed 4:3 format. Fahrenheit 451(1966) and Back to the Future 2 showed people having large, widescreen TVs in the future. My personal favorite is 16:10. Great balance between 4:3 and 16:9
Why isn't it called 8:5?!
Brilliant! I've got an old high end Sony CRT 28" for my retro gaming. Pictures beautiful, & the sound is better than any flat screen TV I've ever heard
My Samsung phone takes photos in full resolution only for 4:3 ratio. Selecting 16:9 will result in smaller resolution.
These guys inserted an ad into their content and made it look like it was part of the content. Sneaky....i am out of here. Thsi is what you the view has to put up with when you sign up toa channel that has over 500k subs. No longer is content made for contensts sake. No. It is made to serve you ads and channels are increasingly inserting actual ads that masquerade as par tof the clip. Just like it was here.
The 16:9 aspect is a compromise and 4:3 is still used today, just like all the other aspect ratios. It's quite easy to place other aspect ratios into a 16:9 screen.
What console title is that on the left of the bacjround? Or your right rear most visible on screen... just curious as it looks like it might say space invaders.
well now there's something called superwide PC displays which gets even more complicated....
Because we were no longer limited by the requirements of CRT vacuum televisions. 10 second explanation of a 17 minute video. You're welcome.
Lol FTX
Don't own one but watching this old video now to compare to SEGA's official one they've now released. For me I like that I could use an original controller on this, and add my own game cartridges. Golden Axe 1, 2, ,3 , Altered Beast and just buy Ecco vs SEGA's nicer looking one with less games I'd want. Though it does have Ecco, and the best Shadow Dancer title.
LOL - when you had one of those at home! Blast from the past, and it absolutely dominated a living room. When I moved out I think I settled on a 23-inch Grundig, which looked pretty chunky back then. The Tosh was a behemoth though.
Consumers Distributing in Canada was like Argos... a catalogue store where all the merchandise was picked up by staff members "in the back" and brought to the customer.
It's not that complicated Really...
"Expect the sims 5 in 2019" 2024 and were still waiting....
I remember running dblspace and being blown away with the fact that my 40 MB drive was now 80 MB. It's just that those 80 MB decreased with 7.5 MB when installing a 5 MB game...
Hearing this I really wish there was a 16/10 QD OLED.
Everybody who liked this video will like the one about aspect ratio from Filmmaker IQ. Both videos are very good
It looks like kickstarter backers are unhappy because they've been hit with exhorbitant shipping costs of more than the quoted cost of the monitors, and theyre not allowed to get refunds until after their order has been "refilled by a backlog". To be honest it seems to me these guys deeply undercharged on their kickstarter, deeply underestimated how much theyd need, and now are trying to make up for those costs with "shipping" fees.
I hardly watched TV until Panasonic came out with the 1080p Plasma 50".
a
And now all those young folks use and push vertical video because of their cellphones :-\
Tunnel vision I call it.
Sucks that phones today are ultra wide. I really prefer 16:9 still.
that looks pretty good
The majority of my screens are 16:10... I dont know why we still have such a ridiculous number of aspect ratios.
just had flashbacks to the buzzing in my brain these CRT's used to give me
And here comes 19:9, because most people want their phone to be shaped like a scrumdiddlyumptuous bar for some reason 🤷
How on earth is the screen format where you need _less_ (sometimes no) letterboxing to watch a film in its original aspect ratio a "letterbox of despair" screen?
I love it when anti-capitalists rant about the evils of the free market while hawking a product. You stay classy, San Diego.
4:02 Globo?
5:4 was also a fairly popular ratio. Many of the CRTs shown in this video are in fact 5:4 instead of 4:3
why is the screen squished with video games
Next Question: Why do we watch so many 9:16 videos on 16:9 screens ?
