Someone to hold you too close Someone to hurt you too deep Someone to sit in your chair And ruin your sleep That's true, but there's more than that Is that all you think there is to it? You've got so many reasons for not being with someone, but Robert, you haven't got one good reason for being alone C'mon, you're onto something, Bobby. You're onto something Someone to need you too much Someone to know you too well Someone to pull you up short To put you through hell You see what you look for, y'know? You're not a kid anymore, Robby. I don't think you'll be a kid again, kiddo Don't be afraid that it won't be perfect, buddy. The only thing to be afraid of really is that it won't be. Don't stop now. Keep going Someone you have to let in Someone whose feelings you spare Someone who, like it or not Will want you to share A little, a lot... And what does all that mean? Robert, how do you know so much about it when you've never been there? It's much better living it than looking at it, Robert Add 'em up, Bobby. Add 'em up Someone to crowd you with love Someone to force you to care Someone to make you come through Who'll always be there, as frightened as you Of being alive Being alive, being alive, being alive Blow out the candles, Robert, and make a wish. Want something! Want something! Somebody hold me too close Somebody hurt me too deep Somebody sit in my chair And ruin my sleep And make me aware Of being alive, being alive Somebody need me too much Somebody know me too well Somebody pull me up short And put me through hell And give me support For being alive Make me alive, make me alive Make me confused, mock me with praise Let me be used, vary my days But alone is alone, not alive! Somebody crowd me with love Somebody force me to care Somebody make me come through I'll always be there As frightened as you To help us survive Being alive, being alive, being alive, being alive

A few years ago, I had an unpleasant interaction with some internet troll who consistently dissed Raul for his performance in this roll and this song in particular. I, being a huge fan, argued with him, and he slaughtered me online, saying this was the worst performance of this song ever. I sense this was a person who auditioned for the roll and was beat out by this incredibly talented man and his amazing performance.

This song, without a doubt, makes me cry every single time. How universal is the desire to fit in, to be loved? And to be able to pull oneself up out from the darkness of self-loathing and depression to be able to be there for someone else. Some people spend their entire lives wrought with agony over the question of what love is, and if they'll find it. This song, paired with the last relationship I was in, have helped me to know what love is. I don't know if I'll ever find love however, as I fear I have blown my chance with the one who I care most about over a petty religious squabble. How foolish was I at the time to break-up over her wanting to be married to someone of her own faith. If I could go back and do it all over I would have converted on the spot if it meant being able to receive her tender mercies once more.

Holy smokes! I've always thought Dean Jones did the best version of this, but this was incredible. The stupid thing is that I've only known him as ADA Rafael Barba on "Law and Order: SVU". I had no idea he was an accomplished Broadway performer. Man, he absolutely nails this! Goosebumps and tears...

... but alone is 'Alone' not 'Alive'... there is something in the way he phrases the 《not A live》 syllables. He enunciates each word. In that particular part, others kind of spit it a togheter and souns like a messy 'notta-live' To quick all meshed merged togheter sounding inadequate for the soft uptight sort of OCD behaviour of Bobby's endearing charachter features. Then Raul just sustains perfectly the air column and delivers a natural crescendo and he holds enough power for a last vibrato (which he barely uses as baritone and love him so much because of that) and enough breath to deliver the next ripped rent desperate《somebody crowd me with love》like he is aware of his loneliness yet he shows by singing it that way how desperate he is searching for 《company》 in his life

I have lost count of the number of times I have listened to this on the CD set, and how many times I have watched this in video form. In my opinion, Sondheim could only have called this a "cop-out" if and only if there existed an alternate ending that he had penned that wasn't anywhere near as good...
