Architecture for Thought

Architecture for Thought

Welcome to Architecture for Thought

We explore emergent technologies and philosophies that drive the discipline of architecture toward a more efficient, honest and earth-friendly practice. We focus on Digital Fabrication, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and Material Ecology in relation to Design, 3D Printing and Architectural Theory. Our research aims to encourage new methods of practice by challenging current standards and typologies within design, architecture, and construction industries.

Architecture for Thought is hosted by Stephen Coorlas, a licensed architect and owner of Coorlas Architecture PLLC, a boutique Design & Architecture studio in Chicago, IL. Stephen attended the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) in Spain and was trained in advanced design and digital fabrication technologies. This training was essential to his prior professional career as Design Director of several international architecture firms.

    Amazing. Thank you for making these videos. Very inspiring. Question: Is it possible to generate interior and exterior images of the same building at the same time especially if your building has large windows so you can see the interior?

  • @StephenCoorlas
    @StephenCoorlasАй бұрын

    I'd say there's ways to get it close, but without having an actual reference image to use with controlnet, you'll get some disconnect if you were prompting raw into Midjourney. Having a 3D model of some sort still seems to be essential in creating a holistic 3D proposal with consistent interior and exterior views.

    🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: [00:04] ️ Introduction to Live Session and Design Competition - Discusses a live session for a concept design being developed for ICON's 3D print competition. - Briefly explains ICON's 3D printing homes and the competition's goal of designing a home for under $100,000. [00:32] Design Inspiration and Reference - Mentions using Midjourney for concept development and referencing previous videos on sketch-to-render. - Explains the concept of 3D printing modular mud huts inspired by Musgum mud huts for an expandable dwelling. [02:44] ️ Merging Design Ideas for Affordable Homes - Discusses combining 3D-printed mud huts with single-slope shed roofs for a modern and affordable housing solution. - Explains the benefits of single-slope roofs for cost-effectiveness due to simple construction with minimal ridges. [03:07] Balancing Affordability with Modern Aesthetics - Highlights the challenge of creating an inviting and modern design while maintaining affordability. - Mentions initial design attempts lacking in appeal due to a strong resemblance to hobbit holes. [05:38] ️ Refining the Reference Image and Prompt - Discusses using reference images and combining them within Midjourney to achieve a desired design aesthetic. - Explains the process of adding a reference image URL to the Midjourney prompt for influencing the generated image. [06:06] ✏️ Developing Modern Mud Hut Design with Functionality - Focuses on refining the Midjourney prompt to create a modern sculpted villa made from textured terracotta clay. - Explains incorporating functional elements like striations that can also serve as rain water management and joint covers. [08:38] Iterating on Midjourney Prompt for 3D Printed Villa - Discusses refining the prompt based on the generated results to achieve a design that is printable with a 3D printer. - Explains avoiding overly ambitious terms like "luxurious" that might steer the design away from achievability. [09:07] Maintaining Mud Hut Elements in Design - Focuses on incorporating mud hut characteristics while generating the design in Midjourney. - Mentions avoiding terms like "hut" that can result in undesired design elements. [12:32] Refining Midjourney Prompt Based on Image Database - Discusses the impact of reference images on the generated design and the importance of tailoring prompts accordingly. - Explains how terms like "cinematic" might not be ideal for designing mud huts because there are likely very few reference images of cinematic mud huts in the database. [14:13] Exploring New Midjourney Features for Design Refinement - Introduces new features in Midjourney such as "tune" and "replace region" that can be used to modify specific elements of the generated design. - Mentions how these features can be used in conjunction with other design tools like Photoshop. [16:09] ️ Merging Design Ideas and Reference Images - Discusses combining reference images from different prompts to create a unified design aesthetic. - Explains using a single image for the background to ensure environmental consistency across different architectural elements. [17:35] Iterating on Design Variations for 3D Printability - Focuses on generating multiple variations of a design concept to explore different possibilities. - Explains considering factors like modularity for 3D printability while keeping the overall design consistent. [22:17] Merging Design Ideas for Final Concept - Discusses combining multiple design variations generated earlier in the video to create a final concept design. - Explains using the "prompt together" functionality in Midjourney to combine different design elements. [23:03] Wrapping Up: Using AI for Design Competitions - Explains the purpose of the video - exploring design concepts for a competition entry using Midjourney. - Mentions the benefits of AI for design exploration and competition entries, even for non-paying clients. Hi, thanks for the video. Super interesting. Can you clarify what is the exact purpose of generating these drawings? They are not drawings you can build off of right?

  • @StephenCoorlas
    @StephenCoorlas5 ай бұрын

    No, you cannot build off these drawings, yet. The idea here is that we will not need traditional drawings to "build" from in the future. The hope is for image > 3D > digital fabrication will be a completely automated process. And that technical documentation will be replaced by digital fabrication instructions that are for reference only. This video is highly conceptual, and based on that research.

    Darn, I subscribed to PromeAI...but for creating landscapes by inpainting...I wasted tons of credits and it didn't do anything when I wanted to paint in "grass" and then "trees", it didn't give me anything but rendered the unaltered image 3 times, it's so frustrating. On YT everything works perfectly, but not when you do it at home, lol. As a positiv surprise I got some insane photorealistic...spaceships I generated, it blew my mind, it was totally real and PromeAI renders a nice landscape too...but inpainting (like trees) didn't work at all for me. Thanks for the video...need to learn more.

    FYI analog is actually superior to digital images. For example cinemas still use film (starting to blur a bit now). Digital remains a derivative of the chemical reaction upon the film cell. So for high realism try analogue terms such as 70mm film stock - if you want realism. There's a bunch mm* depending on the medium. Bear in mind it will source from older datasets or whatever so you will also get a different style.

  • @StephenCoorlas
    @StephenCoorlas7 ай бұрын

    Yes, great advice. Of course the datasets are driving the content generation so it's important to keep that in mind for image development.

    Can you also make customised prompts for interiors with specific focus?

  • @StephenCoorlas
    @StephenCoorlas7 ай бұрын

    I'm not sure if I understand your question exactly, but you can customize prompts yes. If your asking about the actual camera focus, yes you can be specific about the focus of your subject in an image.

    Can you just render your basic image into a setting without MidJourney changing the design of the architecture?

  • @StephenCoorlas
    @StephenCoorlas7 ай бұрын

    Unfortunately, no. Not yet at least. There are plenty of other programs that will do that though. Try Veras - they offer a great standalone ControlNet based platform. PromeAI also offers some free trials for this task. You can check out my “Sketch to Render” video that features some of those tools.
