Hello adventurer! Welcome to TTRPGuy, a channel where a group of friends fight evil (sometimes), gain experience (slowly), and save the day (almost never)! We mostly play D&D 5e and Monster of the Week, but we also stream videogames, host worldbuilding streams, and even build our own game systems live on stream!
Thanks for checking out the channel.

    Immovable rods are fun. But they are also a great case of false advertising. They do not permanently bar things. They set a strength DC. A high one, but its a big difference.

    There are a few things worth noting. Your players may not be willing to roll their damage dice and attacks at the same time. Most of my players just outright refuse. Secondly I am currently playing a character who's ac change often in a single battle so its necessary to ask me if something hits or if I am casting shield.

    As a player know wtf your gonna do on your turn and use the time of other PC's turns spent on figuring out what you wanna do. Not everything needs to be an elaborate mass dmg plan or you going through every spell. I would also give the advice of knowing what your spell does or at least have the description in front of you in case your Dm has questions about it.

    Honestly this is the BIGGEST tip I would give to players. I’ve seen people take minutes deciding what they want to do AFTER their turn comes around instead of thinking about it before. I see this tip a lot so I didn’t cover it in this video, but you are absolutely right!

    @@ttrpguy yeah just wanted to get it out there cuz even I have been guilty of taking to long and I see it more common amongst newer D&D players which is understandable. However there should come a time when the Dm shouldn't have to hand hold ya.

    I emphatically dislike the 1/2/3 hit hp rules I've seen in the past. I do like rolling hit and damage at the same time though.

  • @ttrpguy
    @ttrpguy5 ай бұрын

    Personally I only use it in pretty specific circumstances. If the party is entering a really big “cinematic” fight it can be fun for them to burn through minions like that! But I can absolutely see how it can be a hindrance if it’s used constantly. I’m glad you like the autoroll rule though!

  • @Theredmeep852
    @Theredmeep8525 ай бұрын

    Agreed but most Dm's use this in huge fights like a whole war or a siege event to give the players that anime build up hype to the big fight

    Well now that makes me sad. I hope the dm doesn’t kill off the ancient gold dragon npc that is essentially our dear friend (and one of my character’s mentor figures). He doesn’t really get involved much but it’s more because the dm has spun the story thread in two ways. One, it is a very precarious political situation where of the dragon does get involved, the town he cares for will be attacked by the empire’s army as the empire is looking for a reason to bring the town to heel for some time now. Other context for the political part is that a group of chromatic dragons decimated a nearby country with far more advanced magic tech than the empire and no one wants to be the next country like that. Our dragon friend being metallic isn’t going to exempt him from that fear. And for the second part of the yarn. Our dragon friend is in deep mourning. Some time ago he gave us permission to go and take something from his hoard but warned us the cult to Tiamat was there. We find out the dragon’s son had taken over his father’s old stronghold and was corrupted by Tiamat, and, in doing so, had killed his own twin sister. His father, our dragon friend, could not bring himself to take out his son so we did it when we went to the stronghold. We brought back the armor and weapons of his son so he could mourn him properly. We still catch him around the sanctuary sometimes, looking lost and grieving and very much unmoored. It usually takes one of us gently snapping him out of it and helping distract him to help him feel tethered again. So yeah, he doesn’t interfere too much because he is just that lost in his grief. He still has importance though because he has claimed the sanctuary that we are temporarily using as a home base and so few are willing to invade that territory and antagonize him. He still helps us when he can, like sending me through a dimension door to get to the distant frontline where our cleric was in danger. And another time he came storming down ready to tear apart a fiendish thing that we had exorcized from our friend. Dm says he would have been there at a certain round but we managed to finish up the fight just before that round. Had to calm him down and tell him it was taken care of. He insisted on looking us all over. Yeah, very much a beloved npc, especially for my character who has known him the longest of the party. Powerful NPC? Sure! But I think he got well handled.

    Minions in melee range can also be a serious threat to downed players. Two minions getting a shot in on one such player during their turn means four failed death saves.

  • @TheDarkZoren

Dude literally died and had to be resurrected by whatever gods hold power over middle earth. Moral of the story is if you have a character too high level then make a higher level monster.

  • @ttrpguy
    @ttrpguy5 ай бұрын

    I can definitely see where you are coming from! There is a longer cut of this video that needed to be shortened to the 1 minute limit, so a lot of nuance was cut. Gandalf being “killed” early in the story to give the other characters time to evolve as characters without his influence and Muldoon being slain by Raptors so he couldn’t “solve the problem” himself were the real intended takeaways. Finding ways to remove high level NPCs either permanently OR for shorter periods of time will allow your PCs to grow without reliance on more “experienced” characters. I DEFINITELY see how it might read out improperly through this short though.
