I know I could’ve made the comment WAY EARILER but this wouldn’t have been trending at the time… an interesting fact that at both CCXP 2018 and CinemaCon 2019 there was a lost sonic trailer that I don’t want to go into to detail, but when people saw the trailer at CinemaCon 2019 they said that sonic was actually adorable to look at… yeah that’s weird, there are some Photos of what sonic look like in the trailer online and there’s some videos explaining the lost trailer

Look, guys... I've become a bit of a cynic on my middle age, and this is a few years late, but hear me out... They did it on purpose. Wait! Don't leave! Please just stick with me for a moment. I fully believe that the redesigned Sonic was on deck the whole time. It was either A) Try to introduce a new sonic design, and have a traditional one ready in case it fails, or B) Let everyone see the new design, knowing it will be hated, then roll out the Traditional design. Either way, Ugly Sonic did his job. What could have been a groan Inducing trend following movie became one of the hottest releases that year. I'm not sure what the psychological terminology is for a trick like this, but I'm reminded of the Futurama episode where the Slurm queen is going to to roll out a new, inferior product knowing people will hate it. Then they bring back "Slurm Classic" and make millions. Eh?

They wanted him to be realistic? He’s a bright blue Mobian hedgehog from another world with shoes and runs at the speed of sound. He’s not supposed to look like he’s from this world. He’s literally an alien. 😂

The whole controversy is a prime example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Supposedly, the executives went for a more realistic design because they figured general audiences wouldn't care if Sonic didn't look exactly like the Sonic from the games. This kind of makes some sense. They're making the film for all audiences, not JUST Sonic fans. So they want to appeal to the widest audience possible. The problem is that it wasn't making Sonic realistic that turned people off, it's that they went with the most uncanny design they could have gone for when they had the original, more appealing design RIGHT THERE. They could have saved themselves a ton of work if they just used what was already right in front of them.
