    Great video! Is that hammer the peddimghaus Swedish Picard? If so how has the handle held up? After 3 sessions in the forge my Picard hammer head has started to come loose

  • @davidbucklen-blacksmith5402
    @davidbucklen-blacksmith54025 ай бұрын

    Thank you! Yes, it is the Swedish pattern peddinghaus. I have had it for about ten years. The handle has cracked, but I have a wire wrap around the crack to keep it together. Periodically, I soak all of my hammers in water to keep the heads tight. I then oil them down with linseed oil to keep the wood from cracking.

    Уважаемый мастер, может надо было провести закаливание металла вокруг отверстия?

  • @wodenphoto
    @wodenphoto6 ай бұрын

    A36 is mild steel. It wouldn't really harden even if it was heat treated. It's also not really needed for this application.

  • @dima-vesel

    @@wodenphotoЯ сделал похожее приспособление для изготовления гвоздей из мягкого металла. При изготовлении гвоздей расплющил металл вокруг отверстия, когда формировал шляпку гвоздя.

  • @davidbucklen-blacksmith5402
    @davidbucklen-blacksmith54026 ай бұрын

    It is not necessary. If you were to desire a more tough tool, then use an air hardening steel.

    You forge a taper on an iron rod that will fit in the small square hole to the length of the nail you want. Cut off the small taper approximately 3/8" from the point where you want the length of the nail to be. Then while the iron is still hot drive down creating a head of the nail. Please see the next video in the series to see the process. Thank you for watching!

    nice video man! love the header you made. A little advice, if you angle your hammer when you swing so the edge of the face is what hits the steel it is a much more efficient way of drawing out than hitting flat as the edge acts as a fuller or like a cross pein.
