So dissappointed that the whole series about two gay guys' unrequited love. Enjoyed the female nudity and fight scenes. Why do the gays have to insert themselves in to everything. Pun intended.

I understand that in movies there is often artistic license, but in general I dislike it when movies give credit for "major" discoverers to historical figures, where there is zero evidence said figures ever made said discoveries. Kepler discovered planets travel in ellipses not Hypatia.

I just finished binge watching after 2 weeks. It was excellent to say the least. The passion and emotions in each character was certainly deep. The writers had stunning scripts. Costumes were very true to form. Great series, one of the best I've seen in years!

I saw the movie when I was a kid in the 80s. Read the book in high school in the 90s. Saw the film again a few years later. Loved the book; the film is such a departure it shouldn’t even have the same title. It’s a completely different story, maybe that’s why I never completely enjoyed the film.

The only two things I disagree with in this video is that 1. We only see the REUNION of thomas and flint not necessarily the aftermath of the two catching back up so to say that we never really know if its happily ever after for them only that they were allowed to meet up again. its likely to say that the two would have a feud over flints larger actions but I don't imagine thomas would mind much that flint executed his father given what his father did to thomas, to thomas's wife and flint, as well as to their dream. 2. I feel as though the ending with flint reuniting with thomas is more about what flint would give up to see him again. certainly he did fight a war to free men from slavery under the crown as well as to literally free slaves but I feel as though the story in its entirety is centered around how flint does any and everything he can to inconvenience and bring down england for PURELY personal motives against the crown and how it wronged him. in that sense I see his desire to liberate the pirates from under english rule and his assistance to the slave colonies as nothing more than a means to an end in his revenge and that they are not true virtues that he prioritizes in his life which would explain why he would so easily capitulate to silvers demand that he surrender in exchange for being reunited with thomas because above and everything else thats all he really wanted was to see thomas again and feel his soulmates embrace. this explanation of his motives definitely clashes with his original motives prior to becoming flint but throughout the entire show its not so subtly implied that flint hates who he has become and whats hes been led to do but is hopeless to quell his anger until he sees everything burnt to the ground as a true slave to his own rage which makes it more reasonable to interpret the ending that way IMO. great analysis otherwise though I love this show so much I'm considering another rewatch with friends its just truly peak.

Black Sails, as any fan will acquiesce to, is mid. The end of season 2 through the first half of season 4 are great. Season 1 starts slow and is directionless. Season 2 introduces the Flint/Silver dynamic as more than superior/servant, and is when it starts picking up. It's lacking action, which comes off as a funding issue as the battles are important and oft referenced, but scarsely shown and without much fanfare. You feel the struggle as the try to discover what the show will be about. Season 3 starts harshly, with the abrpt assertion that all the characters have been talking about a 'free Nassau' for 2 seasons... they were not. S03 opens to unestablished and unearned character changes. While I applaud them beginning to wrap up lingering open questions and unfinished stories as soon as season 3, season 4's ending still seems rushed. They do my least favorite mcguffin in movies - pretend someone was working on a sceme behind the scenes the whole time. SPOILERS: I appreciate that they killed off Flint, and the spinning of a fairytale story out of it to Madi as a fantasy to make it meld into Treasure Island's story and fiction about hunting for Flint's treasure is a nice touch too. But, I felt they did yet another disservice to Flint's character in resolving the fantasy with Thomas. I feel like they made him gay just to be gay, not addressing any of the interesting situations a closeted gay man would surely face in the 1700's as a 'widower', a criminal, a captain, a leader, a masculine male - so many elements which they gloss over or present him as straight as if they forget about it (his relationship with Thomas' wife as an example, and WHY was she ok with her husband cheating with Flint, so much so that she too loves Flint?). Billy was a let down, he was so strong of a character through season 3. Guthrie's death was a bit abrupt - necessary to drive the Governor's story. All-in-all, it's a good show, but it has it's issues. Just glad they never went too 'Pirates of the Carribean' hokey with it.

I really hate the way most people say that this film is like "based on mulan" especially from a young naive audience. When the novel itself wasn't even based upon that story.

That one death scene in season 4, yea, that was probably the most gruesome thing I've ever seen on television. It was fucking amazing. The whole way that scene played out, at first I was like "oh, that doesn't look so bad.." then he comes up and I wonder "why is he all shredded?".. then they show you. My favorite thing about it though is that, while not how that man saw is end historically, it was a way that many men did, and I don't think I've ever seen it portrayed before, and if I have, it certainly wasn't done that well. This show was such a 10 out of 10, I'm upset it took me so long to find it. Rare to see a show start this good, and literally get better every season until it has an almost perfect ending, and then you can read a 150 y.o. book to hear what happens next lol. EDIT: I had no idea people didn't like the first season, I was hooked from the start. The quality of writing, and elevation of narrative above all else was so refreshing to me. I think it may be due to the tv shows we've had in recent years, and their tendency to fall apart shortly after starting. It definitely left me craving something better, and that had depth, and Black Sails has that in spades.

Islamophobia? I think you’re using modern left-wing liberal presumptions at critics who watched this movie. As it can clearly be seen throughout the film, it is the teachings of Islam that have led the Arab people to the brink. The Taliban, Isis, Hamas, etc. are the groups that eviscerate their own people in order to suppress their individualism. Islam is oppression and chaos. These innocent people need to be liberated from Islam.

I've been a lifelong James Bond afficionado and for the longest time my only contact with Toby Stephen's was as the main antagonist in "Die Another Day". I'm sure Toby did his best but it is a very lackluster and forgettable performance. I just recently finished Black Sails and was absolutely mesmerized by Toby. It honestly took me a few episodes to place where I knew him from. He has a certain tendency to clench his jaw and show his lower teeth when he conveys anger that I had seen somewhere before. Now his performance on Black Sails and his portrayal of Gustav Graves is so starkly different it should be studied. I understand one is a movie and one is a series but even if any one episode is held against his portrayal in the movie it is glaringly different. Toby Stephen's absolutely blew me away as Capt Flint. Bravo!

I'm a big believer that if a character has to die because it benefits the story, than he or she should die. But I see how avoiding that bury your gays trope was smart because the amount of hate that would've brought on, especially considering how queer the show is to begin with would've turned many people against this show. Sadly those deaths in those other shows have left a bad taste in so many people's mouths that there's no coming back from it anytime anyone discusses those other shows. I'd rather the show stay with a small audience but be considered overall well loved than to have something stain it for all eternity.

Just started watching. I was hoping for a gritty, realistic pirate-themed series. After thirty minutes I have a series produced by nitwits where every pirate has perfect teeth, all the women are LA Fitness clean and all of the sets are cleaner than Disney World. The show is obviously produced by avacado toast people who like to believe everyone back then looks just like people today - they do not. A pirate would have been lucky to be alive at age thirty,m and he would have been even luckier to have half of his teeth and no STDs staining his filthy britches. And no woman - cleaner and better dressed than Uma Thurman - would be bossing around pirates and making loans; no woman - especially the non-STD-afflicted prostitutes - would be speaking to any of these men in any tone. DEI has its paws on this show, it is obvious. I will keep watching but I am typing this as the rest of episode One plays in the other room - I am missing nothing of importance, I am sure.

I just finished watching Black Sails on Netflix and I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis. I also enjoy our kindred spirit. I am most critical of the things I really love in the hopes for the always unattainable perfection. Unfortunately, that can be very frustrating and perplexing for some of the people I love. That being said, this show was as close to perfect in all aspects as you could expect from any!

Ehh...(?) Here be me, years later in hopes for entertainment by any enraged comments about buttpirates. . The ending criticism almost made sense until the reasoning got a little edgy. If the show being dark, and Flint being violent, were reasons to kill his character, there wouldn't be much point in the story existing. That's a strange enforcement of values just to end them. It's hard to balance an ending, but realistic isn't just hail nihilism, like in older Ramero flicks. More often realism turns out to be functional absurdity, otherwise your fictional story would be a waste of time, too much like real life. Why watch so much sound and fury signify nothing? Who wants a story about dead buttpirates?
