The Night Light with Joshua Johnson

The Night Light with Joshua Johnson

Uplifting, nonpartisan analysis of politics, pop culture trends & democracy.
Hey there! I'm Joshua Johnson. I know America feels dark these days. That means it's time for us to shine, and put meaningful connection above petty politics. I live stream three days a week and post video segments from the streams. If you're an independent thinker who wants solutions to our big problems... or if you're just tired of partisanship and want some common sense analysis of what's happening in the world... then The Night Light is for you. Feel free to comment with questions, critiques or ideas. And I hope you'll share your questions and thoughts during a live stream. We keep it civil, smart and fun at all times. Thanks!

    This week has absolutely wrung me out--I cannot believe that Democratic leadership has chosen this point in the campaign to create a circular firing squad. Republicans will follow their guy to gates of hell, and we can't get past a genuinely good and decent person having an off night. And the media is breathlessly pushing this narrative. JESUS. The Atlantic is acting like Biden died and NYT has minute-by-minute coverage of what some random intern on Capitol Hill shared off the record. It's bordering on yellow journalism🙄 I used to wake up thinking about my own stuff--now I wake worrying about the election!

    As an independent who is fairly neutral, I like you have more than just "but trump bad", but they seriously need more. I do not fear Donald, because I trust the congress to mess things up, and the government to slow things dow, no matter how much he wants. Give me a reason to vote for someone, because this last year they have given me nothing.

    I may be in the minority--but I have faith in Joe Biden. He's a man of action and integrity. I don't care about one "bad" debate. As Lincoln said, our destruction will only come from within ourselves. I have family who was killed by hitler's henchmen, I'm voting against another dictator

  • @nightlightjoshua

    I don't think you're necessarily in the minority. The polling clearly shows concerns over Biden's age, but I'm not sure that means people have written him off or they're simply worried. He's got the CBS News debate coming up soon - we'll see how that goes, and then maybe that'll give us a clearer picture of whether supporters like you will outnumber the skeptics. *sigh* 2024: never a dull moment!

    I appreciate your commentary today and thank you for showing the messaages that show why the Democrats can't make a change at this point. I'm an Independent, but totally left leaning. mine is running. have been a runner my entire life, but I don't really ever feel like going. Discipline. Getting out the door is the hardest part, even in a 20 mile run. Five to ten minutes into a run, the hard part is over--getting out the door and started. I teach at a University and occasionally have students say to me, "I can't get in the habit of running." To which I respond, "Oh--I have to force myself to go every single time." Coming from someone who has run several marathons! Hardest part: getting started.

    Thank you for this! I was having my second advanced maternal age c-section, having told the anesthetist that I had a hard time with the injection due to my curved spine. He blew me off. After telling my husband I’d see him in the OR, I laid down on the table expecting to be numb. I told them I could feel it. They insisted it was pressure. Nope. They put me to sleep and I woke alone, not knowing what had happened. I cried and was confused. My husband saw my son before me. It was awful. I ended up with postpartum psychosis and I am convinced this trauma was part of it.

    Trump cannot vote, since Florida doesn't allow convicted felons to vote (obviously a voter suppression tactic). Also, there is no mandatory minimum for class E felonies in NY, so Trump could get probation. I'm hoping, at a minimum, it's like 2 years with some split of maybe 60 days with the rest suspended. At least suspended until he violates his release.

  • @nightlightjoshua
    @nightlightjoshua2 ай бұрын

    Actually, Florida voters passed a law in 2018 that restores voting rights for felons after they serve their sentences. Previously they had to appeal to the state for permission to vote again. If a Floridian is convicted in another state, Florida follows that state’s laws on clemency. New York State doesn’t suspend voting rights until a convict is actually incarcerated, so Donald Trump can still vote during his appeals. Had he been convicted in the State of Florida, he’d be ineligible to vote right now.

    As an educated woman, a Greek Orthodox Christian and a Swiftie I might add, I can unequivocally say Butker is an idiot. This was purely a political speech. A speech based on religion would be much more humble, if it was true to what we believe. Unfortunately, like much of the other hateful rhetoric out there, this helps usher in more idiots like himself to come out of the woodwork and make some very dangerous changes in this country

    This is the best discussion I have come across and I deeply appreciate your humor - I literally laughed out loud at multiple points!! The only point I wanted to add was with regard to Harrison’s message to women. He never directly states that women have only one “vocation”, but he does say the following earlier in his speech - “so I have no other choice but to embrace it and preach more hard truths about accepting your lane and staying in it” - before bedazzling his congratulations to the female graduates with the statement that they have been told “the most diabolical lies” and then presents his wife as an example of a woman who… dare I say… stayed in her lane? He also neglects to identify his mother as a woman worthy of praise/recognition and the absence of this is glaring given his own self-stated intentions for the speech. The actual words regarding his view of gender roles may have been ambiguous, but the message is exceedingly clear. Thanks again for such an awesome video. It was excellent!

    As a European atheist bisexual man, I cannot understand how one can act like this man, let along live in peace with themselves. I must first adress my issues with the practice of being outspoken about one's religion, especially when it strives to have an impact on other people's life. As I understand it, what the majority of the scripture revolves around is love and respect of the other. With that, one would expect that self-identified devout religious people would vie to be as loving and respectful as possible of the other, including when their behavior goes against one's faith. I find that to extremely rarely be the case, many times instead justifying bigotry with outdated and oppressive scripture, and I believe this is a prime example. He talks about pride, and you touched on it, and made a great parallel with expected humility, however I would like to expand. He assigns LGBTQ+ pride to be sinful (without any explanation btw), but having read up on the subject, I cannot understand how one can see that, except for the use of the same word. As far as I understand how Pride as the original sin is percieved in the christian faith, it would be best described today as Hubris, arrogance, which can be defined as "to claim or seize without justification". No person in a reasonable mindset would precieve LGBTQ+ pride as that, as its whole goal is to seize rights, and claim equality that have been denied for centuries, but with justification. No one can deny that everyone has the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, therefore that LGBTQ+ pride is justified, and christians have no business continuing to slander the community. The whole anti-gay thing is based on Leviticus 18:22, as I said, justifying bigorty with outdated and oppressive scripture. Lastly, and what I think is the most important thing to take out of this whole controversy, you talk about most religions having conventionnal gender roles built into them, and that we might need to start criticizing them for it. I believe we do need to start criticizing these religions, and not just on this point, but on all the oppressive messages build into them. In my view, over the last 150 years, humanity has finally moved past the need for commanding religion to create bonds between people. Instant mass communication has filled the role religion evolved to be, as the great binder between people and communities, a shared culture. We have that in most of the world (and should aspire to bring everyone access to information). Nowadays, the most visible impact of religion in the world has only become war, oppression, genocide, and hatred. In America, it is used to justify bigorty and oppression and enrich televangelists. I believe we must make it a thing of the past. Not by force, but with argument and with denounciation of the inequality built into it.

    His flippant "pride" comment and his need to take a shot at his "teammate's girlfriend" tell me at least a couple of the things that he holds in his heart. Those things don't feel consistent with the tenets of the faith in which i grew up.
