    I think for a lot of onset adult swimmers, a common cause of sinking hip during fly is stiff neck. They usually tens up their neck when they try to exit the water which makes their shoulders work harder for a breath which in return sinks up their legs.

  • @Andrewsheaff
    @Andrewsheaff2 сағат бұрын

    That's definitely going to make things worse. And with a stiff neck, they'll have to lift up higher, pushing the hips down. Not good!

    Wherever I think the swimmer would benefit from improving their connection to the water I'll consider sculling as a tool. Most often that will be encouraging an earlier connection.

  • @Andrewsheaff
    @Andrewsheaff11 күн бұрын

    I agree. I think sculling is great for helping swimmers learn how to feel and create pressure on the water. For that purpose is great. I'm not sure swimmers should try to create propulsion while pulling through sculling. I think those are two different ideas.

    Andrew would you go as far then to avoid the 'outward scull' when setting up the breaststroke pull and just get the hands straight out. Oh and any idea what Ricardo was going on about the other day- I thought the 80's/90's were all about Bernoulli principal.

  • @Andrewsheaff
    @Andrewsheaff15 күн бұрын

    I think breaststroke is different. With fly and freestyle, the hands are recovering shoulder width and then setting up the stroke. The arms in breaststroke are recovering straight forward in front of the face, so they need to slide out to get in to the same position as butterfly or freestyle. From that position, they can get into the stroke. I don't see that as a 'scull'' in the classical sense, but a repositioning that is dictated by the different recovery. Hope that makes sense.

    Wouldn’t it be better to think of using your hands to push off the edge of the block forward as opposed to pulling your body forward? Seems to me pulling would risk “pulling the upper body both down and forward. While approaching it as a push against the front of the blocks would “push” the upper body forward but also upward to give the upper body more elevation going forward and complement the kick up of the back leg used to help elevate the hips off the blocks. (Brad Tandy start) Watching Caleb Dressel starts. He places his thumbs on top of the blocks and all 8 fingers in front, I think, because it makes the thumb joint a hinge point allowing the muscles in the arms and shoulders to transmit more force to the 8 fingers pressed against the front of the blocks than simply pushing with all 10 digits (Archimedes Law of the Lever).

  • @Andrewsheaff
    @AndrewsheaffАй бұрын

    I think Brad Tandy is pulling himself forward and down. That's what's required t get everything forward. It's a rotational movement, not a linear one. Lifting the head as the body gets moving helps to get the upper body moving up a bit. That happens after. You also can't push against the block until the center of mass is in front of the block. At that point, you don't need the arms anyway. I hope that makes sense.

    Thanks another great video, I do the 2 beat kick and seems like I kick down way to early probably ie my kick is completed at the setup phase of the recovery meaning I kick then pull. It seems like in this clip or looking at Katie Ladecky the downward phase of the kick is completed right at the power phase of the catch ie shoulder. Is that a right assessment?

  • @Andrewsheaff
    @AndrewsheaffАй бұрын

    Try it this way. Think about kicking with the left leg when the right arm enters the water and the right leg when the left arm enters the water. If you do that, the pull timing tends to get better. You should feel the side to side rhythm better. Let me know if that helps.

    Soo, through the center line means we SHOULD break the horizontal line of body? What about the resistance this type of kicking creates? What about the upkick, should it also break the center line?

  • @Andrewsheaff
    @AndrewsheaffАй бұрын

    Great question. There’s always the balance between creating more propulsion AND more resistance with a bigger kick. I think the kick should break the center line. However, that has to be done in a way where the body is relatively controlled. If you watch that video, the swimmers have a relatively tight undulation until it comes to the feet, which are moving pretty far in front. That allows you to get more propulsion without causing too much resistance. I have a video coming out on Thursday about the upkick. The upper leg isn’t going to move nearly as far behind the body as it moves in front of the body. The feet will move a little more behind the body because the feet bend. Again, the body isn’t moving that much, just the feet. I think that keeps resistance low and propulsion high. A mistake a lot of swimmers make when they try to kick through the center line is that they move the body a lot rather than the feet. That means less propulsion and more resistance. That’s one reason I like the exercise in this video. The torso doesn’t move around much, but they have to move the feet over a bigger range of motion. Hopet that helps!
