    Yep the speed of shift on a powershift can be adjusted but they're still pretty jerky. What I don't like is some gears are more jerky than others so if you slow it down to make the jerky gears better the smooth gears become slow and delayed. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching

    One thing that I don't think you mentioned for the synchro range is the lack of a 1st or 2nd reverse, which makes backing up to attachments and being precise kind of a pain unless you rest your foot on the brake and feather the clutch. I got our 3020 running and immediately noticed that there really is no way to easily back up super slowly.

    Good video. A lot of good information. We also have a 3020 standard model. Been in the family for almost 50 years. It will never leave the farm. It’s is a very fuel efficient tractor. Nothing beats it. Is it true, it’s an identical motor to the 4020 just 2 less cylinders? And is everything from the flywheel back the same as the 4020? Like the trans and rear end?

  • @machineryd2765
    @machineryd27653 күн бұрын

    Thanks I really appreciate it! The 3020 is the same design as the 4020 and a 4020 rear end will bolt up to the 3020 engine but everything from the clutch and input shaft to the axles and 3pt arms are the same design as 4020 but a little smaller. It's awesome that you have a standard. I'm in Missouri and standards are pretty rare here. Thanks for the kind comment and supporting the channel.👍

    I forgot the engine question. Yes the 4 cylinder engine is essentially the same as the 6 cylinder 4020 with 2 less cylinders. But they did have to mount a balance box assembly (weighted shafts) under the crankshaft to balance the 4 cylinder. The 4020 engine didn't need this because inline 6 cylinders are inherently balanced. Thanks again

    That is John Deere TSS transmission. Meaning Top shaft syncronized. Should be able to shift up and down the 1234 moving with a clutch. The H L R you need to be stopped. If your having problems down shifting with the clutch it could be that your syncronizers are bad. I would suggest trying to rev match by shifting to neutral, letting clutch back out, then revving engine up a little, then clutch and downshift. May help a little.

    As far as reliability both of them are fantastic. For cost of rebuild a majority of Synchro problems are going to be the top shaft which isn't that terribly expensive 5 grand can go a long ways. Power shifts most of the time you're only going into the front clutch pack which is just a clutch housing split a couple Grand and you've got your C1 C2 and PTO clutch pack and transmission pump rebuild If you have to go into the planetary pack of the power shift it can start to get expensive but most of the time it's really not that terrible because it's a broken seal and a couple clutch discs. Very rarely have we had to go in because of planetary failure On the Synchro transmission if you have a problem with the ranges on the bottom shaft that is where it gets a little more pricey even if you use used gears to help keep the parts built down the bottom shaft is just a lot of Labor because you are going to pull the axles you're going to pull the three-point you're going to pull the differential. So you have a lot of Labor and then if you put new bearings in there it really adds up the labor

    Hey Bob, they all CAN last 20,000 hours or more if taken care of. But the powershift is expensive if the day ever does come that it needs rebuild. As far as the syncro vs Quad Range the syncro still has a dry clutch so usually doesn't last as long. And the Quad has a 2 speed bump shift which are pretty reliable but can go out. If I were rating them only from a reliability and cost of repair standpoint it would be 1. Syncro 2. Quad Range ( very close 2nd ) 3. Powershift. Thanks for watching 👍

    The biggest question (you mention it btw 5:10 - 5:20 remain) remains UN-solved. Why the gears are not going gradually 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8 instead of 1-3, 2-5, 4-7 and 6-8 still remain a mystery. It's OK that you have got reverse with just one move BUT you have to be a magician to make a gradual increase from 3rd to 4th gear. The conclusion is only one. The John Deere engineer must have had diarrhea and was in a hurry while working on this gear design.

  • @machineryd2765
    @machineryd27654 ай бұрын

    Although it is odd how the ranges over lap each other so that gears do not line up in order 1234.. sometimes it's a pain and some times it is a benefit. Example when taking off for road travel where you take off in 6th and clutch to 8th I believe if it was in order 5678.. that 7th would be too high. And I've used the 4-7 shift Alot when I'm baleing and need to move to a different part of the field I can shift up and throttle back. But you a correct there are many cases that being able to clutch and move 1 gear would be better. Thanks for watching

    Despite the transmition design I simply love these 4020 John Deere tractors. The 4020 is a legend, even though I didn't have the pleasure to ride it. In my village near the city Sveti Nikole in Macedonia (south-east Europe) in the mid-60s, a big state-owned agriculture company that worked some 15-20 thousand hectares (more than 35-40.000 acres) has bought new 10-15 John Deere 4020, the workers who were operated them still telling stories about these machines...they don't need mechanics, they don't need spare parts, don't need anything but diesel fuel and regular change of motor oil. In the season of plowing, they were working a few months 24/7. Later in the '80s and '90s, the company has bought some newer tractors like Zetor, Belarus, Fiat, IMT, and some bigger and newer models of John Deere but the 4020 remains the best tractor ever entered in the village. Greetings from Macedonia.
