The rules for magic are pretty sandboxy. It's not like the Vancian magic system of D&D or Palladium Fantasy, nor is it like the action point system of other games. Basically, there are a few different ways for a player to cast spells, one is using the Spell-Reader trait, which allows a character to read from a scroll. Scrolls are 1-shot items that are destroyed if a standard 2d6 test is made (the game uses a d6 system with target numbers to meet) or the spell fails and the scroll remains. Scrolls are pretty powerful, so think higher-level scrolls in D&D. Note: There are no schools of magic or domains for wizards and clerics, it's all pretty sandboxed. Spell-Touched is the other trait which gives the character cantrip-like powers such as mage hand, illusory object, ghost sound, etc. Simple illusion magic, mostly. There is an optional set of rules for Prestige Traits that allows characters to grow into "prestige classes" (so to speak) such as Archmage, Archdruid, Assassin, Grandmaster, and Paladin. Archdruid gives you animal companions (trait may be selected multiple times. Needs Beastspeaker trait). Assassin allows you to attack at disadvantage to force a death save of the target. Grandmaster is a martial artist that gives you martial arts disciplines (trait may be selected multiple times. Needs Drunken Master or Martial Artist). Paladin allows you to smite foes with holy might. The Archmage allows you to specialize in a magical discipline (may choose multiple times, needs Spell-Reader or Spell-Touched). Each magical discipline has 4 powers that the Archmage character knows and can use at the cost of an action (every character has 2 combat actions available to them). Most spells and spell-like abilities are simply descriptions of what the character is doing. The DM decides if that is within the character's abilities, and if so, the player makes a test to see if it succeeds. Tests are a roll of 1d6, 2d6, or 3d6. 2d6 is the standard test, 1d6 is the disadvantaged test, and 3d6 is the advantaged test. Tests succeed if the player can roll a 5 or 6 (or DM option) on any of the dice the player rolled. Of course, the DM can determine an action impossible, highly improbable (needs a 6 on a die), or whatever. This is a very minimalist system so a lot of the gameplay is up to the DM and players working together. It's interesting in that you aren't constrained by a junk ton of minute rules you have to follow which can hamper imagination. But, on the flip side, there may be a lot of people who don't like the simplicity of the system. Characters are basically a race, 3 traits, a weapon group, and a belief. There aren't classes as D&D players are familiar with. But I think it's a pretty slick little system. I hope that answers your questions about the magic system.
@mitchellsink25844 жыл бұрын
@@ExcalibursZone I personally love a more imaginative system, unfortunately I don't think my players will. I might by it anyway cuz I just love a system that gets out of my way and we can play without having to look up a bunch of nuance rules.
