Question…? is the sonic, melodic and thematic successor to Out of the Woods. These songs are my favorite tracks on each album. I guess it’s not a coincidence!

You should look up the meaning behind “adding shadows to the walls of the cave” - its in reference.to the Allegory of the Caves by Plato’s work. Hozier is one of the most underrated lyricist, there’s usually a philosophical meaning behind his words.

Ha your confusion is so relatable about the lyrics of this song. I'm glad you interpreted it not as an affair though. It's rare that people seem to get that the wife thing is after time has passed pretty clearly, they aren't together anymore in the first verse... and the chorus about the Fortnight stuff too makes it clear. You seemed to understand this song close to the way i do on the surface level. I've been a big fan of your channel from my other KZread account -- just wanted to comment and subscribe now from this new account that I created for my own Taylor Swift reactions and analysis. My very first reaction and analysis was for this song and then the music video :) Channels like yours were definitely an inspiration to me wanting to try it for myself.

Cherry Wine is such a delicately pretty tune and Hozier's voice is gently sublime. It makes the imagery of the lyrics even worse once they register.

Hozier has a voice that can do these really intense anguished or exultant vocals, and I think the relatively subdued, gentle singing and melody here was exactly the right style for a song about the way domestic abuse victims often try to justify and rationalize the way their lover treats them. I love love love Hozier’s latest album, Unreal Unearth. It’s absolutely amazing listening to it all in order, but also in pieces! A lot of the songs deal with grief and loss (of a person, of a relationship, of a culture) but the songs gradually incorporate the theme that all endings are sort of beginnings in their own right. Some of my favorite songs are Unknown/Nth, Who We Are, Icarian Carrion, First Light, and Butchered Tongue if you’re looking for suggestions!
