Claire's Footsteps

Claire's Footsteps

Hi, I'm Claire! I'm a full-time travel blogger who focuses on overland journeys (planes, trains and boats are my jam), lesser touristy destinations and I also post about South West England, which is where I live. I split my time between the South West and travel, when I take my work with me on the road.

On this channel, expect vlogs from my different trips (including train, bus and boat vlogs), local tips for exploring South West England (I know Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Bristol really well) and travel tips and hacks that I've uncovered after travelling for six years, to over 60 countries - many of them solo.

I'm passionate about uncovering people's stories and love finding interesting, thought-provoking angles to destinations around the world - but I also don't take myself too seriously and love injecting a dash of humour into my videos.

Do stick around, hit the subscribe button, and drop me a comment!

Thanks for stopping by!

You did very well in visiting as many sights as you could in 4 hours , obviously there is dozens more but you'd need 2 full days to around them all . Glasgow doesn't really have a connection with Dr Who other than former Doctor Peter Capaldi is from Glasgow .

Hmmmm… well… transport museum (building meh, exhibits worth a look), Uni Cafe Byres Rd, Botanic Gdns, Burrell museum, Fossil Grove, Stockingfield Bridge on the F&C canal, there are TWO Edward VIII pillar boxes in the west end, Dalmuir drop lock (Clydebank but near), Central and Queen St stations (Queen St recent refurb shows off the old columns), C R Mackintosh didn't live in that house but there are some of his buildings round town (not the art school, it burned down twice) you can have tea at the Willow Tea Room in Sauchiehall St, , Greek Thompson buildings, Mitchell Library, Squinty bridge, Squiggly bridge, abandoned station in the Botanics, the most recent Indian Jones film was filmed there, former car garage in Vinicome St, former Salon cinema, the Lion Chambers (before it burns down) and ditto the Hat rack. I'll probably think of more later.

There is some controversy over where Chicken Tikka Masala was invented, some say a Punjabi Chef in London's Regent Street. Birmingham also gets a mention. For a supposedly modern city but still using paper tickets is somewhat backward. Traffic cones were not invented until the 20th century, the mid 1960's

Avoid Budget Airlines like the plague, Flag Carriers can be as cheap. Always print off tickets and documentation as one's phone may go on the blink. Never use an airline that only accepts a passport as ID when not required such as a domestic or CTA flight. Leave it at home where safe.

I was obviously very fortunate; I travelled Aberdeen to Lerwick three weeks ago and the reverse crossing a week later and the sea was like glass both ways. I found everything about NorthLink (not North Star!) to be excellent. Maybe foot passengers who book a cabin do not get a voucher for entry to the Magnus Lounge; certainly when boarding with a car you do. The Magnus Lounge gives waiter service and one free drink.

I'm glad you're discovering your Cornish-Celtic roots and promoting the link with Brittany. Come visit your fellow-Celts in the Outer Hebrides sometime! 😁 You can do Oban to Barra, then take two other ferries on the Hebrides and return from Stornoway to Ullapool having visited the entire archipelago!

You've just amply demonstrated why a Sat Nav app should not be relied on, they do literally lead one up the garden path. Always have a paper map and learn how to navigate with one, it's like riding a bike, once learnt never forgotten. The French have the equivalent of our OS maps, forgot the name now as donkeys since using one, mobiles were the size of bricks or a car phone. The Michelin or Le Routier Guides are excellent as well.

One little tip. Beware of those little green buttons on the doors to go outside. Problem is hundreds of people press them, especially those at the stern of the main deck, so touch them through something like your sleeves or whatever. We've used this ferry many times and in the early days on about 1 in 3 trips one of us would go down with something nasty a few days later. Maybe that was by chance but anyways nowadays we either don't touch them or go wash our hands if we do, which seems to have cured it.

Did that once returning from Jersey to Weymouth with the Wife and 4 kids on a night sailing as no cabins available, needed two adjoining or at least close minimum, absolute nightmare. One of the girls lost her favourite Teddy, tantrums all the drive back to Sussex. Told her to leave it in the car when we drove on but she ignored me. Outward sailing great as a daytime one with plenty for children to do. Last time I ever booked a short notice holiday when night ferries involved during peak holiday season. She's now in her 40's and still reminds me of it whenever Teddy's mentioned.

In ‘96 I got the O/N boat to NL. I had a sleeping bag and ThermaRest mat so I just slept on the floor in the seating lounge. Nobody bothered. Need to be careful with chocolate mousse. They often have gelatine. I just avoid it.
