I felt bad for Jay lost his mother and was completely innocent. The product of this environment and wanting to seek revenge turned him into a monster. I think it makes sense why he decided to take his uncles out with Smurf none of them treated him nicely at the start and didn’t help Julia all of the brothers were adults and could have helped her and Jay but they didn’t.

It will always hurt me a bit that they couldnt just ride off into the sunset together. I didnt think J turning on his Uncles was necessary. Great show man .

After watching it a second time (the entire 6th season), I think it was an excellent ending considering what they had to work with. Andrew was tormented more or less all of his life and J reminds him that his sister deserved far better. Andrew had a conscience after all, and that shows in his attempt to reconnect with Amy. Craig was also tormented and could never break free, just like his sister, drugs were that easy, but temporary escape, along with the thrill of making the quick (sometimes big) score. But he changed once he became a father - all too late. Deran was the one that could always take a step back and realize the life that Smurf put them all into really would be a dead end. Fitting that he was the one who lived, presumably to go to Indonesia and help raise his nephew Nick. Maybe he reconnects with Adrian - the viewer is left to wonder. Smurf was essentially evil to the core and was rather intelligent but not quite as smart as she thought she was. We see that her sons were her instruments of fulfillment - providing her with (in her mind) a love more pure than any of the men that fathered them. So, given all of this, how could she treat Julia anything but cruelly? Sad but true, Janine had no use for a daughter, whom she realized would be a potential rival. It hardly mattered that Julia wanted a more honest life and tried to succeed in school and maybe go to college, but the lure of the fast bucks that her mother represented was just too hard to resist, especially after receiving a stolen roadster. That left J - the one we see at the very start of season 1, recovering from his mom's OD death. He's the smart one, no doubt, gaining it from a combination of his grandmother and father Baz. It's not entirely clear at the start whether he realizes why his mother Julia died, but he eventually puts it together and quietly vows to get revenge on Smurf. His uncles are just collateral damage along the way, as - unfortunately - is the one person he might have cared for, Penny. Yep, he ends up with the money, essentially the residue of Smurf's smalltime empire, but $5 million is more than enough in the country he ends up in (Vietnam? Malaysia? Thailand? I saw Virgin Islands, but it seems everyone in the final scene is Asian). We're left to wonder whether or not he and Deran run into each other at some point in the future. The best dramas always leave a loose end or two for the audience to ponder. One of the best television dramas I've ever had the pleasure to watch. A bit violent and gory, but that serves the purpose. In the "law of the jungle", it's kill or be killed. That is, after all, the animal kingdom.

That last shot of the series forced me to reconsider my entire understanding of the show. It felt very out of place to me at first, until I started viewing the show though the lens of "Watch how one complete narcissist [a.k.a. Smurf] can destroy the lives of everyone she touches." That last shot of Jay alone with Smurf's millions is showing us that Jay's life was destroyed because she turned him into a person who can never trust anyone ever again. Which is why he killed Penny, even after she promised never to tell anyone that he lied about his alibi.
