    The Netflix show is much better than I thought it would be. But I agree that there is room for improvement. When they're breaking down seasons 2 and 3, the writers need to focus on what is essential to the overall story. Then they can keep things on track. I didn't need to see Cabbage Man, or the Secret Tunnel singers in the live action version. Those were funny moments in the anime, but if I want to see them again I can go back and watch the original. The live action version needs to bring things to life. A good example of this in Netflix's show was the flashback that showed how Zuko got his scar. That hit so hard, I was in tears. The showrunners need to let the actors show some real human emotion---especially the boy playing Aang. I think he'd be great if he stopped trying to sound wise, and just acted like a kid (a kid who's learning how to be the Avatar).

    I think the dialogs between the charackters could be more realistic because often they just say simple phrases to eachother and then act like super touched by that.

    Looking at it from a story-telling standpoint, the fact they were able to get such an extreme reaction means they did something right. If it was not executed well, people wouldn't have cared. Look at Oppenheimer that just won Best Picture. It's a very heavy movie but many people consider it to be one of the best movies of last year. Sad stories can still be great stories

  • @TheRealPostpunker

    I felt like there were some great heartfelt scenes in there. And others were just too blant. The characters need character development. And I cannot understand why they cut their iconic stuff so much. Like Aangs playfulness. He is waaay more accepting of his role than he was in the animated show. Iroh does not give that much wisdom and his tea addiction isn't as severe here. Zuko never said "honor" one time. It felt okayish but these are also fan moments that should not be cut. Sokka has another motivation that was fished out of thin air with the dad not accepting him as a fighter but could be told so it becomes something powerful ( be a good leader without relying on talent but more on knowledge and ingenuity ). His interaction with Suki was way too blant and the sexism he had should have been a part of him. It may not be to everyones liking in the beginning but that's how you write nuanced characters. Let them have flaws and redeem themselves. Most of the characters did not choose wrongly. Aang running away was because he felt he didn't want this burden. This was accepted by him already in a few episodes where he tried to fill out the role. I feel like that they crammed too much in there becaaause they maybe felt like this would never get a second season as it is not clear in the beginning of production. Like storywise the world felt a lot smaller as we didn't get context of the world. Like how big it is and the 100 year war in its grandness. There was a single epic fight in the southern air temple but that did feel like it was right after Aang left the temple. Zuko felt the strongest for me as a character in the live action. Katara has nothing for her sadly. She got the waterbender master title like nothing. And the other thing was. Aang never used waterbending once. Why?

  • @ChrisCherrie
    @ChrisCherrie2 ай бұрын

    I agree with you! I think they definitely brought in some elements from later in the show to try to win over people more. It's definitely missing a lot of the nuance and doesn't give many of the characters room to grow. The original show also improved with each season so hopefully that is the case here

  • @bl0ots

    Awesome and clean video. Nice work! I almost agree with you but I totally understand the circumstances they had. Maybe if more people watch the first season the budget will be higher for the next ones. The bending was pretty good tho I think.

  • @ChrisCherrie

    I agree the action and bending were some of the best things about it! I believe this show had a similar budget to One Piece so I feel like it does come down to better planning and direction. I had no doubt this show would get a lot of viewers, just from the Avatar fans alone

    The reason why letterboxd is essential for movie enjoyers is that it shows you many films that would be out of your bubble if you follow 10 people who might have the same favourites then when they watch a thriller they rated 5 stars you can do a face value research and put it on your list etc. I think you are definitely going to miss out on that if you have an echo chamber inside your notes app especially reading other peoples reviews and taste can combat your own takes

    I haven't really had an issue discovering films outside of my usual tastes. I hear about movies from word of mouth, a variety of social media pages, KZreadrs, and occasionally scrolling through the movie theater apps to see what's playing. The key is actively seeking things to watch, even when it seems like there's nothing interesting playing

    I respect your feelings about trying to limit screen time. There also can be a lot of pressure and judgement from people online, and I see a lot of that on Reddit and Twitter. For me, I’m happy with Letterboxd because it actually began to replace doomscrolling on instagram or twitter. But that’s just my personal experience. I now use Letterboxd most days instead of the rest! But still too much screen time in my life I think :) I also enjoy the community aspect, the people I follow, and who follow me, are the ones likely to share similar thoughts and enjoy similar films. So commenting or receiving comments has rarely been a bad experience. I’m lucky for the small and supportive following I have. Plus, I LOVE seeing what everyone is watching because I find incredibly films I would have NEVER heard of! Like hundreds I think I would have gone without seeing in my lifetime. I also “log” films without reviewing them whenever I truly don’t care to share my thoughts (this happens with controversial films or ones people expect everyone to love) or I just don’t feel like I want to write a review in general. It’s nice to have the dates of when I watched films, and the tag system. The tag system or list system allows me to have tags for trigger warnings (helps me recommend films to my friends/family while being conscious of triggers for them), tags for each friend I watch films with so I can remember who I was with, and tags for their genres or release date, and if I saw them in theatre. The list system has allowed me to make curated recommendations for followers or friends, or just fun projects such as a colour coded list (by poster) of Modern Horror and then one for Classic Horror that I personally recommend. The thing is, if you’re happy with your system, then you’re doing it the right way. I think limiting screen time is a huge necessity and it sounds like you’ve found the best way to execute that. This is why I have never downloaded TikTok, despite people begging me to. You have a great system for your films and I don’t think there’s anything you should change about it (unless you have new ideas of course). I can’t lie and say I DONT doom scroll reviews haha, but it certainly beats instagram most days.

You really had a lot to say about the story of it, and since I liked American Fiction when I watched it in the future, I think you will also like American Carnage and The Menu from 2022. You said 2022 was a great year for horror, so I was disappointed when you never mentioned American Carnage or The Menu. Aimee Carrero (Young & Hungry) won a Breakout Performance Award for The Menu, which also reunited her with two guest voices from Elena of Avalor, John Leguizamo and Arturo Castro but I think American Carnage has the much better, more horrific storyline, even though it is relatively less popular than The Menu.
