Southern Woods and Waters

Southern Woods and Waters

Follow along with Host Brandon Dowdy and the Southern Woods and Waters crew as they head out on outdoor adventures of all sorts, throughout the state of Tennessee, and even a few other states from time to time. Lots of action, and "how to’s", will be had along the way. The crew covers everything outdoors, including Hunting, Fishing, and Adventures of all kinds. Whether we are Crappie fishing, on J. Percy Priest, or Deer hunting somewhere around the state, on private and public ground, chasing Rabbits, or kayak fishing, on the Caney Fork River. You will always find something, to keep you tuned in. While the main show has been filmed live every Thursday night at 8:00, on Channel 5+ in Nashville, for twenty years and will continue to be, we have created this channel to be able to share more of our in the field experiences, with you. With such a wonderful, and growing staff, we often have great footage that simply cannot make it it to the live show. We hope you enjoy watching the show!

Why you hold that bucket so high when you dump them in your barrel? That buses the fish and causes a dark spot on the meat.

Good work guys! I don't fish the Cumberland or Old Hickory, but was wondering what was the water temp and approximate date of the trip? I've had a hard time pinning down the best shellcracker fishing. Seems I always end up with mostly bream and only the odd cracker or two.

I've been a subscriber for awhile but this really peaks my interest. Not many people out here who enjoy and appreciate catching these big ol hard fighting panfish. Ain't nothing like it . Yall boys done pretty darn good. We we out today and I caught a few bluegill and a few shellcracker. 1 of them I weighed it and it was right at 1 1 /2 lbs. If them thinds weighed 10 lbs you wouldn't be able to get them in. Hard fighting jokers. Good clean quality video guys.

Thank you for the kind words! We love all kinds of fishing and chase whatever species is biting at the time. Shellcrackers are one of my favorites! Winter we chase Sauger and Walleye, late Winter and Soring its Crappie time, shellcrackers for a few weeks, and then on to white bass, Striper, and smallmouth through the summer. We do fish in the Fall, but I’m strongly addicted to Whitetail😃

Caney Fork River (headwaters of Center Hill Reservoir) Walleye run regulation in effect on the upper end of Center Hill Reservoir, including the Caney Fork River beginning at the boat ramp at Rock Island State Park and extending upstream to Great Falls Dam. Anglers restricted to use of one hook having a single barb or lure containing a single hook with one barb from Jan. 1-Apr. 30. No more than 3 rods and reels or poles may be used.

  • @southernwoodsandwaters1510

We chose to bring our own reels only and use their rods. It is easier to travel that way. Typically tip your guides 20-30% or so. They work very hard for you to stay on the fish all week!

We don’t have one either! This film was done with a friend of ours that has one. We catch the majority of our Crappie by hitting the tops of brush piles and fishing structure. It is just depths that change all the time. The easiest time to catch them is in the Spring when they come in close to the banks (check out some of our bank Crappie shows). When they are in open water like on this film and you don’t have a scope, we prefer to troll for them with small 200 and 300 series crankbaits. This allows you to cover a lot of water and depths at the same time.

@@mattc4581 it is a tough lake to Crappie fish! Smallmouth are no problem there, but the Crappie act different in that deep water. This time of year you will find them mostly from the mouths of any of the creeks back into the middle of it. Try trolling small cranks in 40-60 feet of water

Thank you! We do our best, what’s funny about it is we couldn’t care less about the size of them. We air many hunts from across the state with hunters of all types. We have aired everything from 1.5yr old spikes to a 174inch buck. If someone is looking for a rendition of “Monster Bucks”, we ain’t the place. Real Hunters being everyday hunters is all we do. We will be sure to hold our deer differently next time!
