"PROJECTS" A channel dedicated to those of us that have accumulated to much of what we love.
Every car guy has been by that house with the Project the owner is going to get to one day. Well, not long ago I took an inventory of my own Projects and realized that I had better get moving quicker on my own or I may not get everything cool finished in time for me to enjoy them as they were intended.
In my personal life my Projects are eclectic to say the least. Literally dozens upon dozens of vintage engines and racing parts, classic cars, guns, bicycles, film cameras, race cars, watches, hot rods, antique trophies, muscle cars, and motorcycles just begin to define the list of Projects I hope to finish.
Follow along as I work through what maybe the insurmountable task of either finishing, trading, or selling off my stash of Projects.

Has any progress been made on this project?
It's been awhile since I purchased those pieces, must have been a reason I thought they were AAE, maybe the sellers or maybe I was looking at a catalog that was printed after you hade moved on from AAE? Thanks for the info and I'll have to check out your blog
Cool chopper but sadly neither the headlight bracket or pegs are AEE parts. I worked in parts department 71&72 at AEEfor Tom McMullen. I also have the AEE blog.
Hello. I am fixing my STD pan, and surprisely the case do not fit properly the gear cover gaskets, I tried all brands, and now I am cutting an specific one. Did you have the same problem? thank you.
@ricardopetriccione2844 I seem to always have bushing alignment issues with Pans but this one came eith a side cover that STD had already mated to these cases so no I did not have that issue on these cases but yes swapping cam side case covers is iffy at best
My favourite bike in all the universe 🥇🏍🥇
Five star DIY !
Evening, What happened to this digger can I ask ? You still got it by anychance 😁
@Shovelhead.76 I do still have her. Just working on so much other stuff haven't had a chance to finish her.
Can you post part 3 please? Thank you
It is advised by many Ironhead gurus to never remove those 2 drainplugs. The tranny/primary oil can be drained by removing the primary cover. The sump will scavenge when the engine is running. Leave them plugged.
Incredible build
You need a table, small HF roller toolbox. I'm older, can't work on the floor. Garage sales, FBMP is good. Those long pins with the middle tapered, are impossible to find. Over grease it, grease in the seal lip and wipe off all excess on the outside. 👍
I'm your typical guy with too many Projects and this channel ends up just making do because of that. I do have a "Handy" motorcycle lift in the garage, there's been a Norton Featherbed on it for a couple of years waiting for me to finish a valve job. Every square inch of my garages are filled with Projects, tool boxes and benches that's why this is being done on the back patio. I get you though it can be a pain to work on the ground.

Why don't you have to put hte car under load to torque?
That made my day it will grab at your heartstrings if you know what you're looking at
So I’m not sure why you would bother piggybacking the old wire with the nice new wire why wouldn’t you just run the nice new wire and not splice them in together and also if you’re running the wire to eliminate the connector if you think the connector may be an issue maybe you could put some dialectic grease in it to promote a better connection with the ground wire if you need a better or heavier ground just eliminate the smaller gauge wire no need to splice wires together like a piggyback besides when you do that if one wire is shorter than the other, when you piggyback that means pulses can go a different speeds and then you could have aecho affect just like if you did this with the speaker so you would have heavier wiring by adding more wires you would add interference, but if the issue is with the amount of current, you should be changing the Statter itself or flywheel or source coil to something more stable
Let's cover the connector first, it's a shade type, and that type of connector isn't best known for it's ability to carry larger current loads (their basically 2 flat pieces of brass sitting on top of one another) and once the resistance at the connection builds the spade begins to loose it's "spring" memory and thus the connection becomes lesser and the heat continues to rise as the resistance becomes greater leading to the failed connectors. Since the part isn't a regularly serviced component eliminating the connector removes the possibility of a failure location. We piggyback at the connectors, not after, and you'll notice the ground circuit now runs directly to the battery. It does not do that in the OEM configuration. The ground lead for the ecu runs to frame if memory services me right and that is not actual battery voltage. That is this systems biggest failure. The system is charging the battery to a false reading so we are now feeding the ecu the actual battery voltage we'd like to maintain. I am probably somewhere around a year since this modification and have experienced no indications that a failure is forthcoming. I can't remember why I piggybacked the battery charge circuit; probably because it's a 30 amp fuse from the OEM and I couldn't see how the stock wire could maintain a 30 amp load.... I do agree with using dialectic grease on connections but it doesn't necessarily create a better connection per se since it's an insulator and not a conductor. DG is great at keep contaminants out of the joint and maintaining the integrity of the connection, but this is a heat related issue. The heat weakens the tensile of the brass connectors, and then they begins to loose connection, increasing resistance. Thanks for your thoughts and taking the time to write
Where did you find the x73 kit? I heard it was on back order?
It is. I had my Porsche parts person order it piece by piece.
@@ProjectsMB I tried to do that at my dealer but they quoted some ridiculous price like 4k lol. The kit used to be 1500
@JordanPayneLV yeah I'd say that's a little excessive, even in the Porsche world. It wasn't cheap but it was reasonable if you factor in struts springs, spring seats, torque to yield bolts, sway bars, bushings, etc. But my wife's car was low mileage so I did reuse the sway bar links and the bushing retainers for the sway bars and a few other items, I think I reused the spring cushions too. That kinda shopping does add up to some savings at the parts counter. I think we paid between 1700 and 2500 total for parts.
@@ProjectsMB that’s pretty good, I hear fortune auto may be making a set of coilovers for the 918. I’m wondering if they’ll be any good
U need the b58 harness u tryna fit b58 coils in a n55 harness
The kit comes with the harness adapter, had to watch the rest in the series.
I just hate open deck engines.
Sometimes you have to work with what's given to you
Just seeing this video in May 2024 - very sweet bike!! Can't beat 'old school' cool!!!

@@ProjectsMB Very nice! How did that original Harmon front end handle compared to a standard front end? Was it stable and straight tracking on the road? Did you pass it along or and up keeping it?
Was this the Steelcase super T-10 or the aluminum case.
It is an iron case and was supposed to have an aluminum tail housing but he did have one he thought was good enough so he provided an iron unit.
@@ProjectsMBI really could tell by the pictures, and the mid plate looks aluminum, Back around 1974 I built a 331 tunnel ram, put it in a 55 Chevrolet Pickup, I had a real nice M22 Rock Crusher, a guy that I knew told me hell you need to get a super T10, so so I found a T10 GM all aluminum case, and then the jerk said oh no I used the all steel case, did not know any better back then. I have been looking for one for years have not been able to find one. I have learned a whole lot in the last 50 years about parts. Thanks so much replying on my comment.
What are your and your wife’s thoughts on the handling after the upgrade? Also, was it challenging to purchase this kit - some forums say it’s out of stock on most websites
She wanted something closer to the Sport Plus mode of our 997.2 GTS and I would say this is slightly better than that but obviously less power. It is about as stiff as a 996.2 S. The kit is no longer available but the parts can be bought individually as we did. Just takes a bit of research and a good parts counter person
@@ProjectsMB Awesome, thanks for the reply! Also as for power, I put an FVD tune on my 981 BS and really love the increased responsiveness. Porsche intentionally detuned the 981 3.4 engines so they wouldn't compete with the base 911 of that gen.
Dude you are fucking god sent, THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!
Can you post the part numbers for the bolts?
@drkstr7 If I still have those packages or the receipt, I will but I won't be around the shop until this weekend.
@ProjectsMB would be awesome whenever you can, maybe just throw it into the description for others 👍 thank you!
Sprayed on? Nikaloc? you’re making it up as you go…
According to many people's experience on forums, using steel/iron sleeves results in head gasket failure within a few thousand miles because the expansion coefficients are different from aluminum.
I had read the same and discussed this with LA Sleeve who out me in touch with a couple of their customers that own Porsche specialty garages. I spoke with one, because I know their reputation, and they said they have not experienced any head gasket failures related to sleeve installation. That said, I don't doubt the problem has happened but LA Sleeve has been at this a very long time, where as many machine shops simply don't have the experience or equipment to do a job like this successfully. But if it blows a gasket I'll be sure to post that up
Woah, that's way more affordable than the nickies kit!
I think that "Mahle" is pronounced like the name Molly. On that 996 engine, you are going to replace the IMS bearing with something that permanently fixes the famous issue, yes? Great video!
I just got my hands on a C4S that has a good amount of noise from the bore scoring. Looking at a 4.0 build. Basically the same as this.

Great videos. Did you have to change anything on the diversity control unit/module or the A pillar antenna units ? This is in relation to FM/DAB intermittent service + sound fades in and out and lack of signal / station lists. Only impacts Tuner (Radio / DAB) function.
thanks for this extra info. it looks even more horrible to do now. wiaitng for a third youtuber to come in and make it look harder 🤣
Dude this saved me! The frunk manual cable didn't work. I was out of idea's. After searching all over I finally found your video. Thanks
Gorgeous
I was curious if you have started on this project yet? I have been looking for a set of cases and heads like these - would love to know if these end up on the chopping block for sale/trade.
I have not gotten much further on this project. I spent a lot on the heads and doubt it would be a reasonable/justifiable option for your build. But you're welcome to make an offer.
@@ProjectsMB looks like my reply may not have gone through. Is there a way to email or call you directly?
@@ProjectsMB seems like it deleted my contact info.
@davidraimondi629 I am not receiving your contact info. But just to give you an idea of where you'd need to be, so we don't waste eachothers time I paid in excess of $6,500 for the complete heads and I don't remember what I paid for the cases. I won't take a loss on them, I'd still like to build this engine just haven't had the time
@@ProjectsMB that’s a bit more than what I thought I’d hear. I have a very similar set with the exception of them having the 3 stud shovelhead style exhaust flanges. I have the cases already - NOS set from 2007. Sounds like I’m going to need to get used to the exhaust flanges on my set 😂 I hope to see your build on here sometime in the near future and get to see what you do with yours. I’m still trying to figure out which rotating assembly to go with etc.
Thank you for showing 15 min of unnecessary content and leaving off reconnecting the power steering coolant lines!!!
I didn't cover reconnecting power steering lines because I didn't remove them to begin with.
Great video. Great presentation. Seems thought out and to the point. Appreciate the content.
solved our problem. thank you
Just did this, thanks big man
Excellent DIY.
How were you able to take it out the block I’m having a hard time 😫
Lots of jiggling and working the pipe up and down to break the O-ring seal in the block loose.
Omgg thanks so much I’m going to keep trying tomorrow it started raining on me so I had to stop and clean up
About how long did it take for you to take it off ? I can see the o ring seal a bit but one side doesn’t look like it wants to wiggle out
@@marilynnmaciass9442 probably 10 minutes of fighting it
Gdanm ima have to remove this part to get to the wastegate plug on turbo because this pipe is right infront of it. do you think I should drop the cat to get to this pipe and itd be easier to remove?

Awesome bike. There's a video on here with that bike on a lift at Bill Holland's shop. ( Neighborhood Sportster, channel) I think he mentioned he was doing controls for it.
Would love to see it, send a link. I did have this bike up at Bill's to have him go over it and make a new sissy bar, clean up the foot controls and see if he remembered working on her back in the day. Turns out he did identify her a bike John built and said "by looking at the fork, John made those too, because he and I did them slightly different." So that was Kool to find out too.
Not sure I'm tech savvy enough to do that, but I'll give it a shot. Was the shop (Bill's) you mentioned taking it to in Cali ?@@ProjectsMB
@@tuck6464 I found it. Thx for the heads up.
Cool. Hey, is that shop in the video in Cali? I could swear, I heard Bill mention moving to Florida. I get people, once in a while asking if anybody still makes the "Spirder" front ends. I don't want to pass on bad information, saying, Bill's shop is in Fla. @@ProjectsMB
@tuck6464 that was one of Bill's shops, he's had a few. He just moved out of that one last month. He does still build front ends. I do not believe he moved to Florida. He can be reached through his Executive Choppers website.
Your buddies rsv4 !..
Thank you so much mentioning the relation of these with the RSS engine mounts. I was speciifly looking for that answer!

@@ProjectsMB Hey, so I just got a call from Cantrell and they wanted to inform me that they believe they don’t fit base models, only GT3 and turbo. The double din supporting frame is $60 new from Porsche if you don't want to grind up the original one.
Can you use the included controller and a manual throttle body?
I'm not sure I understand what you're asking? I think by controller you me the supplied ecu to run fuel and ignition maps but control the throttle blade manually. I don't think the architecture allows for that.
Hellova find! Can't wait to see the finished product
I saw this at Bills Shop about two years ago. Have you gotten the bike back?
Call Keenan Tatro man, he can tell ya what cams you need for that thing plus he'll have them, he I a wizard with the older harleys.
I have 2 997's. DON"T worry about the tick. I sometimes don't drive them for a few months at a time. The tick is very low and it does go away after a few drives. It can be just that. I have never replaced the oil pump. I had one parked for 4 months and the tick was annoying and I was scared. It went away after a few days of driving. I know I know. Doesn't make sense but both of mine do that. It is hard to hear what you are hearing though so I could be wrong if your sound is different.
Clean ride. Flip it later;)
