Wonderful film that I watch over and over. But there are a couple of noticeable holes. First, how in the world did Rose's mother not see that Rose's health was declining. The last time they showed Rose reading a letter from Eilis and in tears, her skin was so white and she looked so feeble that I looked at my wife and whispered, "Rose is sick. She's going to die." Second, while it is not clear how long Eilis was back home in Ireland, she had received more than a half-dozen letters from Tony, including one that we see her take from a small table by her front door. Did her mother not notice the letters? Any normal person would ask "who's this Tony who keeps writing you?" I get that the Irish are always portrayed as keeping things close to the vest, but this was silly. The mother's surprise when Eilis said she was married was equally silly. Another thing I would have liked was for Eilis to have had more words for Ms. Kelly when Ms. Kelly confronted her about what she had learned. Also, Eilis is not blameless. Because we like her so much and she is generally so sweet, we ignore the fact that what she did to Jim was incredibly cruel. And it was cruel to her mother because in the mores of the day, she would certainly never return to Ireland again. Finally, I am going to assume that his narrator is AI because why does she keep pronouncing the name as Ellis when it is clearly Aylish.

It's implied that Tanner is a psychopath who just enjoys hurting people, and his brother Toby is a narcissist with no money. Toby enjoys emotionally torturing people rather than just fighting them overtly. I think the scene at the gas station showed Toby's lack of empathy when it comes to violence, violence that would ensure his reputation was protected against Tanners remarks about being soft. In this case Toby abused his mother until she passed away, because his brother being a psychopath exempted Tanner from being tortured by his brother Toby. Toby, therefore, then needed a new narcissistic supply in the form of his son and ex-wife, who he could manipulate by removing them slightly from their disparity. I think the scene explaining how Toby lives in a place with generational poverty, is more a testament of how hard it is for a regular person to change their situation, and therefore how alluring the relief from disparity is to his ex-wife and son. just hope to clarify that if the brothers both suffered from these personality disorders, then their lack of empathy would have disqualified them from being righteous in their beliefs about the banks being the real villains, I would even go so far as to say that the banks causing trouble was a Red Herring of their true motives. There's a lot of criminal justice knowledge that went into this movie, and admittedly a lot of the concepts are not overt. I really appreciated the spiritual and shamanistic attributions to these movies, and will definitely remember these insights in the future, thank you for imparting them to the viewers.

so where's the "hidden meanings " . the narrators OPINION and in some cases false assumptions do no constitute hidden meaning , especially the "light " explanation . Consciousness has nothing to do with light other than light and darkness are appearing inside of that which is awake to itself or pure consciousness . There is pure consciousness and then there is light and every other aspect of the almost infinite variety of the relative field . the relative field does NOT produce consciousness , consciousness produces the relative field.

Disagree w/ take on him pushing others away. He fought because he was hollowed out and subconsciously wanted to absorb punishment out of guilt and shame. When depressed, you dont feel anything but depressed. To quote the song Desperado, “Yer losin all yer highs n lows, aint it funny how the feelin goes away?”. Lee was wearing a scarlet letter. He was arguably not irritated, but empty and monotone and incapable of feeling loved. He got hugged by his brother and just stayed limp w/o hugging him back and he didn’t wanna engage w/ women. Plus, his wife left him. His line, “There’s nothing there”, showed he was an almost empty vessel going thru motions. The kind of thing part and parcel of depression. I’m not a shrink, but I’ve had it and millions of others know the same feels.

@@consciousmoviereviews9730 Sorry to hear that, hope he's doing ok now. PS: I hope I didn't come off arrogantly. My intent was just to disagree on a minor point w/o being disagreeable. I watched the full movie again last night. Casey has it over Ben acting-wise, tho Ben is good depending on roles (Dazed And Confused, Boiler Room, Argo, and Gone Girl were all solid performances), but I knew after seeing The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford that Casey was going to win an Oscar one day. His Bob Ford character was also replete w/ guilt/shame/depression. If you haven't seen it yet, I HIGHLY recommend it. The last 3rd focusing on Ford in the aftermath of his deed is my favorite part, again because Casey is such a top-notch actor at conveying what he conveyed in MBTS. Naturally, that kind of role is inherently more dramatic than, say, a comedic role or any other type of role, so he had a leg up on Ryan Gosling in La La Land for Best Actor, but a sad lad who needs a hug is his meal ticket as compared to anything else. He's got that kind of character motivation in the bag. Per male actors, I have Leo, Gosling, Casey and Joaquin Phoenix as the current Rushmore. I was hesitant to put Leo in there because he's been in bigger films for much longer than the rest, but their birth years were 74 (LdC), 75 (CA/JP), and 80 (RG). Gosling is a fine actor who also conveys grief and sadness fantastically (as evidenced in The Place Beyond The Pines, which I also recommend). He can cry on cue, which helps the cause. I just think he trends towards dumb roles too much, as evidenced by Barbie. However, he's a happy person, so it fits his personality. The Pines and Drive (2011) characters are not who he is. Those are the kind of roles I prefer tho he's usually great in anything. I also think Bobby Cannavale is a terrific actor (born in 70), but I think his Gyp Rosetti has made me wanna see him in nothing but gangster roles. I was hoping for a bigger role for him in The Irishman, but alas. His, "Do ya?...Couldja?..." line to DeNiro made me laugh. He's just superb playing heavies. But again, happy person. Any rate, I went on a tangent, but hope you enjoyed the journey anyway. What more contemporary actors impress you actingwise, male or female? I'd have to ponder my female Rushmore, but I'm fond of Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence (tho she's mildly obnoxious in real life).

@@nonplayerzealot4 Thank you for your message. I do like Gosling, but his default emotion and expression to me is being sad. As for DeNiro, I sense a real-life edge to him that borders on dangerous. That's my inner sense about him. I'm not a fan of Jennifer Lawrence. I call her, DeNiro and Tom Cruise personality actors. They play themselves mostly, not much range in their acting to believe they are someone else. Joaquin Phoenix is masterful, along with Leonardo Dicaprio. There are so few like that in Hollywood. Tons of excellent actors outside of America that don't get much recognition. Also, if you like good stories and drama, Korean movies are now my favorite to watch.

Great analysis of the film. I think with Jim as well he fell for her in regards to the person she had became from going to America, not the person she was before she went to America. He fell for this new her that had also been developed by her relationship with Tony. I think with Jim whilst he may have initially been the more stable option he represented what she had known before and came across as a bit more boring compared to Tony, who had also demonstrated his ambition for building properties and succeeding. I think the film also shows how you can change as a person and grow by moving away and learning a lot about yourself. I think it also shows that only you really know what's best for you. Great film!

Excellent dissection of an overrated, self-indulgent, boring film. CMR you broke down all the key elements of 'Once-Hollywood' to their essence on why each character represent sides of QT and his clear frustration with change in Hollywood. I can respect his position as an artist but the results were melancholy and weak. The same director of Inglourious, Kill, Django, etc. put out this whiny over-nostalgic crap. I was surprised but not shocked when the fanatics of QT and Ho'wood community gushed over this. Groupie mentality has no borders and is blinding.

Dear mrs Joy, it's a little hard for me to express how divinely and God sent this video was for me when I found it, or it found me. But I'll say before watching it I was pleading for self love and self trust and apologising to myself for not loving me like I wished. Doing that somehow made me declare I'll be moving away to a place I've been feeling called to but ignored the calling because I've been scared to take that independece step. Not 3 minutes had passed since that when I calmed down and wishing to distract myself I watched your video (mind you, I had spent the whole afternoon watching clips of this same movie) and well, all I can say is I feel through your words the Universe reassured me of everything.
