Blacktail Studio

Blacktail Studio

I’m Cam, the owner of Blacktail Studio. I started woodworking in 2016 as a hobby. Eventually I realized my hobby was expensive, so I tried selling some items to sustain it. Then I thought I might be able to help find customers if I made a video or two on the process. So in 2018 I launched my KZread channel.

This led to that, and in 2020 I quit my job to do this woodworking youtuber thing full time. Best decision I ever made though, I hope you enjoy following along!

Char is a lot stronger than wood once the epoxy seeps into it. Think about it.

I don't think blue table will sell good, but it will surely get more views for the video

I’d be curious to see a piece that incorporates both the black of the burnt wood and the black epoxy that you use in a lot of your videos, just go see the contrast between the effects. In your waterfall video, the burnt wood with clear epoxy is reflective like a mirror from certain angles, and you can see the texture more clearly in others, so that’s be interesting to see contrasted to (I’m guessing) a pure opaque black. Also really curious- I’m guessing it’s just not your preference, versus the back- but I’ve seen blue resin used to emulate a water effect- it’d be cool to see you use a blue epoxy on one of your tables.

I am so glad that you are challenging yourself with weird suggestions. Weird to you, or challenging because of historical reasons. You kept talking about warping and future problems as well as technique issues. All said and done, you got the job done. If you are going to talk about a guitar body, you should also talk about a guitar neck. Why are you not running a guitar neck rod down the middle of the central post? If the table develops problems, pop out a central rubber plug underneath and turn an Allen key guitar neck rod. This will unwrap the neck of the table just as a guitar. Yeah. You can now maintain your central post tables. Wow. Right? Then. Stop making these table while stationary. Vases are made on a turntable that spins to help you make a symmetrical design. I loved the walnut and blue acrylic table. Awesome job. But with a spinning turntable you can grind spirals and circles into the table. You can stamp designs into the wood as you index the wood 45 degrees. So I am suggesting: circles, spirals, stamps, and maybe indexed grinds. Kick it up a notch. You’re awesome.

I’m a little late on the comments for the video but I’m an automotive painter and the one piece of advice I’m haven’t seen in the comments is to hang the panel instead of laying it flat or prop it up vertically. You work in dusty shop so you going to get particles in it during the process inevitably. By hanging it you will eliminate most of the dirt, as the dirt falls it will land on the upper most part of what you are spraying so it would land in the top edge instead of the entire surface

I understand you shouldn't use wood from lowes or home depot for furniture at your level, but could I use thinner wood for making coaster with resin?

Brown. Try a multi colored piece. Some a little less out of the box and a little more stander but still different. Say a black, green and white. just so that it stands out but not a single colored piece that would stand out like a sore thumb. Maybe a good idea would be to try a few color palettes on some small offcuts. You could do a lot with even two colors.

The thumbnail shot of the video... I thought you used all that material to make a phone case. All that material, just to make a phone case... It's obviously silly, but it does kinda look like one without context.
