I found that a high speed steel tool with more top rake didn’t chatter so much also run a bit slower.

Hi Bruce, thanks for your video, Im fairly novice to operating a lathe, my first job is very similar to this one in your video- drilling a 1/2” npt hole out to 29mm, threading to 11.5tpi then finishing with a 1” npt tap to get some taper happening. Problem is my thread chart on my AL-410 lathe doesn’t state a 11.5” tpi thread. It has 8,9,10,11,12 etc. Do you know how I can overcome this? I could drill the hole out to the right size and hand tap it with a giant adjustable spanner.

DSG lathes must be the best ever made. There was one in the toolroom when I was an apprentice and after a few years I was allowed to use it and it was a dream, beautifully made and so smooth and accurate.

Hiya Bruce. I've got the same job to go at on my renault master van, however, I'me wondering where to find the full insert kit like you've got there. So far haven't been able to find them. Have the helicoil, but what also worried me about that setup was after you snap the lug off the bottom of it, it's got nowhere to go but down, and this'll do the engine no good I imagine. Possibly it'd come out if you do an oil change afterwards before starting engine, or if you try to magnetize the lug breaker tool. this might also drag it out, tho I wouldn't bet on either being a success. But maybe you'd have a link or what's the brand of the full insert kit you were using please?

You should not drill into the table since the internal stress in the casting will be released and it could warp your table make it not flat and maybe even cause it to bind

I don't have that dead center for my rotary. What I do is coax indicate the rotary and set that at X0.0 Y0.0 on the readout. I then put a long 5/8 dia dowel pin in the spindle, lower the quill into the center of the chuck, then tighten the jaws on to the dowel pin. Perfectly on center every time.
