    Why did mesa change the 4x12 Cab ratings if the speakers are identical? Was it for warranty or did celestion change the design hence the lower rating?

    The fact that one cab is straight and the other is slanted kind of destroys the point of the experiment. You're not comparing like for like. The cab's internal volume, and just as important, the internal phasing of the speakers in slant vs straight cabs means they'll sound very different from each other even with the same speakers. Even if you took the same 4 speakers and swapped them between the straight and slant cab, they'd sound very different, even close mic'd.

  • @colourwavestudios
    @colourwavestudios2 жыл бұрын

    I totally agree. The speakers themselves sounds pretty different when swapping them in different cabs. Internal phasing in the OS slant cabs sounds better with any speaker every time to my ears. The straight OS is boomier and not as tight with any of the speakers I have tested.

    Any thought on how the Revv compares to amps like the Diezel Einstein and D-Mol, EVH Stealth, etc? I often hear how stiff and articulate the Revv is. I like to be able to dial in some give so that an amp is not too dry and unforgiving.

  • @colourwavestudios
    @colourwavestudios2 жыл бұрын

    That is a hard question to answer. I think of it as a swiss army knife. It can do a little of everything. Because of that it doesn’t have a super strong character which is why it does many tones well. I’d take the Revv over my 5150s 100w any day. I love Diezel’s but don’t feel they are very versatile. The Revv I can push it in different ways and get different tones. And the tones are easy to dial in.

    I really am thinking of replacing my Mark V with this or a KSR. I hear the Revv is very bright. So you find that? Rather stiff and dry? I tend to like good saturation and richness. Plus I love amps that can be dark and chewy like a Bogner. I heard the channel 4 or red was modeled after the Uberschall and Dual Rec. Can it get chewy like that? How about the Green channel, can it pull off 80s VH or 90s grunge with a warm tone? Thanks!!

  • @colourwavestudios
    @colourwavestudios2 жыл бұрын

    Considering I had a KSR Gemini and a Mark V a couple months before this amp, I would say it is definitely darker and smoother than the KSR. You can definitely get it bright, but settings at noon with no bright switch sounds really even. You aren’t stuck with bright. It does get chewy but nothing really gets that dual rec tone. Sonny lives on the Green channel. I’ve been using it a lot more too. You can really get about any tone out of this amp. It is still in the studio as the main go to amp. Ordered a matching cab for it too although nothing beats the straight Mesa standard 4x12. The direct out is fantastic too. It doesn’t do the Mesa vibe, but yeah the red channel gets close. I’m still looking for a Mark IV for that. I can throw up a video of some red channel tones.

Soeakers are a mix of Mesa V30s, Redbacks, K100s, DV77s, VM12-65s and CL80s. Thanks. I would love to hear you do some smooth, chewy red channel leads, maybe something close to Bogner or similar. I miss my Shiva but I get good tones from my Archon 100, BFG modded Dual Rec and Mark V. I want to sell the V and maybe grab a Revv. I play everything from VH, to Rush, to classic rock, to Alice in Chains and other rock and grunge from the 90s plus Metallica, Deftones, Tool, Slipknot, etc. :) Thanks sir! :) How did you think the Revv compared to the Mark V and KSR? I have a Mark V that I enjoy but I wish it had more saturation and gain on channel two without having to be so bright and even channel 3 which I like, I feel like the voicing may not be great for me. It's weird cause at band practice, everyone loved the V. I the acoustics in my music room aren't that great. :( Another amp I'm looking at is the Engl Savage 120 Mk II, Mezzabarba Trinity and EVH Stealth 100.

    A cab sounds better to me. Do you think the difference can be in the shape of the cabs? A is straight cab, B is slant cab. Straight sounds better than slant? Or do you think that speakers make a difference? Why B is uk?

  • @colourwavestudios
    @colourwavestudios3 жыл бұрын

    The shape definitely makes a difference. The low end is definitely not as tight in the OS straight cab. We even swapped the speakers and the new Mesa v30’s in the old slant cab sounded even better. My main cab is a traditional straight. For the OS, I like the slant for the tighter bass response. It’s much more obvious in the room. I have the slanted cab but with the new v30’s in it still. We have a Revv cab coming in and can maybe shoot some comparisons between the traditional, OS slant and Revv cab.

  • @toddhahn3690
    @toddhahn36902 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, the slants almost always have tighter low end and more pronounced midrange than the straight cabs, whether they're the Standard or Traditional models. The straight cabs usually have more thump and are more directional. They were designed to be used together as a full stack, so one makes up for the other with the frequencies that they individually lack. They're both great cabs. It comes down to personal taste and the sound you're going for.

Doing shootouts with a Diezel, Mesa and Stealth Cab - I immediately said to myself... If I had to go play a gig right now, this (Stealth) is the cab I would take. It is really even and cuts really well. The low end wasn't super tight like the Diezel but still punchy and good.

  • @colourwavestudios

    Definitely more harmonics and saturation than the Archon. The dual rec has a lot of harmonics but is not as smooth across the tonal spectrum. The Revv has modern features that make it really valuable in the studio. It is also pretty versatile. I had a KSR Gemini previously and prefer the Gemini as it 's high end is smoother. I will do some reamps for the next video using the Roadster and the Revv to compare an old (UK 280w) vs. new Mesa OS. I would say the down side to the Revv is it doesn't have a ton of "character" - it just sounds really good. It is also really easy to dial in a good tone on the Revv. It sits in the mixes I have done so far really well with minimal effort.
