    Ok good choice with the cream , there is a thing called fine line masking tape in various widths down to 1/8 it's flexible so you can curve it nice and you mask up to it unlike the 1/2 inch which creases.

    Take the experts view on the clear coat by all means, as I said I'm no expert. I've never resprayed a car but my most recent experience of using clear coat has been on a set of Rostyle wheels and if I say so myself it came out great and the black sections came out with a really high gloss that I'd never get otherwise. If I knew how to do it I'd upload a photo. BTW I used the method mentioned in the last message to stop the black bleeding onto the silver and it worked perfectly so give it a go! (Remember only light mist coats over the masking tape and let each mist coat dry first)

  • @DC-dp3hk
    @DC-dp3hk2 ай бұрын

    A way I've found to stop the paint bleeding under the edge of the masking tape is to first of all make sure the edge is pressed down well and then give two or three very light mist coats, letting each coat dry first, over the edge of the masking tape. That then seals the joint of masking tape to new colour without enough paint to bleed under the edge. Then when you spray your full coats it won't get under the edge!

    I can't tell you exactly what _basecoat_ is made of but it's only for use under clear. If you have a solid colour you should use single-stage 2K (dangerous) or a 1K 'cellulose' product which is probably acrylic lacquer. I think _basecoat_ may also be 1K acrylic but have heard it's not as robust and also dries matte

    I agree with the previous comment. I wouldn't clear coat it. Clear coating is a modern technique created to prevent the metal flakes in modern paint from oxidizing. In the day the car was built there was no such thing. Paint was single stage, and protected with a coat of wax. I'd do it the same way. In fact I am doing it the same way with the 1966 Volvo Amazon I'm restoring.

    More good progress 👌 but a word of caution I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to clear coat it because you are polishing the colour coat first clear coat is very sensitive and reactive to polish and silicone even if uv just got a bottle off car polish in your garage it could affect it and your compressor is just too small you need a decent supply of clean air and a reasonably good spray gun with a 1.3 set up so a few things to mull over but good luck anyway mate👍

    Sorry to bombard you with messages but going back to the clear coat idea I would think that if you took out the worst of the 'orange peel' first and then spray it all with clear coat that would possibly give you your desired finish, save you a lot of work and also protect your paint All the modern cars are finished that way. As I said I'm not expert but it just seems to make sense. It might just be worth asking someone knows.

    Hi Kris & Ian, I think that you have enough paint on the car to wet sand back as it is, get it down so that your high spots have gone , then i would machine polish use G3 ( not the liquid stuff the harsher one like a paste) keep this stuff wet and take your time not to burn the paint, plenty of water keeping it cool. It will be like a mirror when finished though time consuming. Looking good though, well done both of you.

  • @krismann9101
    @krismann91013 ай бұрын

    Interesting because the compound we experimented with was g3 liquid I will take a look online to find the harsher stuff good shout. Yeah we thought so I mean it's had 2 coats of paint the only thing is tge compressor is very weak we are now wondering is it didn't blast enough paint on so we are gunna just put another coat on the hood just to see if it makes any difference 🤔 many thanks for the info kris

    It's starting to take shape now mate 👌 I'm surprised that you dont use a paint strainer for your paint they cost pennies to buy I allways use them you would not believe some of the crap that is in paint even expensive paint . And on the orange peel that happens when uv got too much paint and not enough air iv discovered that cheaper paint guns need a lot more air to atomise paint than the expensive guns usually around fifty psi . And on the subject off flattening paint back use a soft sanding block and start with 1200 grit wet and dry paper then 2000 grit and finish with 3000 iv allway found this works best 👌

    Looks like water in some of the paint from the compressor put compressor on the floor allow a loop of hose from the compressor then attach a water trap then connect remaining compressor hose to water trap and other end to your spray gun this traps condensation or water in the looped hose and eventually goes into a water trap and not straight from compressor to your gun my father had the same issue the water spots appeared after a few days
